FC Barcelona Thread

Yeah and let's not forget, impressing in a few friendly games pre-season is one thing, scoring and assisting and running the show in World Cup and champions league games is completely another.

We can all agree he's talented and has a bright future ahead of him but at the moment, he's a long way from Iniesta and for all we know, he may not even ever reach his potential and therefore be as good as Iniesta already is!

I clearly said "if he continues his progression", as Bebo noticed. Thiago lacks consistence and needs to take better decisions at times. He still needs a little more to impose himself in the midfield during a whole match.

But he's very near to make it, I think. And he can be a lot more dangerous than Iniesta for opponents. Iniesta usually scores 8-9 goals per season, and does around 10 assists. The numbers don't show how good he is, but at the same time, that's precisely the only thing Iniesta is lacking: definition. For all the greatness Iniesta has, he still needs to take a little more benefit of it, and contribute the team with more goals and assists. And there's where Thiago it's already better than Iniesta.

It doesn't mean he's better than Iniesta already as a whole. Iniesta has a 6th sense of controlling the match and the opponents, the same way as Xavi. He rarely looses the ball and is able to destroy the opponents line of pressure with a single move. Xavi and Iniesta may not shine as much as others in numbers, but when they are in form, they simply reign in the midfield. And those mental attributes, often underrated, are what make Barcelona style work. So Thiago still needs to win this trait, and it's the most difficult one. He may never do that final jump.

But if he succeeds and can really control his energies and think in the team as a whole and work for 90 minutes, then he will be bloody good in our team this season, and can sub Iniesta a lot of matches. Rotation will be key this year. The team was so fatigued the last season that almost lost a title in the way. And there's injuries too...

True. Good post. Lots of IFS of course for Thiago, and a lot of times these IF's don't materalize, at least not all of them but yes good points and all very true. Plus we should be and so far have been given reason to be optimistic about this young talent. :)

Crazy as it sounds I hear he has a brother who is more talented?

rafa alcantara "Rafinha", another genius player...
he is more young than his brother

Barca shouldn't spend so much money on Fabregas, especially now when Xavi and Iniesta are regulars, and Alcantara starts making a name for himself. Though, Fab would be a good, but not the best man to replace Xavi in about 2 years

The team showed what everybody knew: there's still a lot of pre-season to do before the machine is set. Players like Iniesta, Xavi, Busquets, Pique, Alves and Messi aren't fit at all, and some injured too.

With that in mind, I thought today we would loose by 2 or 3, so taking a draw at the Bernabeu it's an impressive result. The gap between the teams may have closed a little, but the feeling I had is that when Barcleona gets fit, we're still far superior.

Today they deserved more, of course, but we had players playing thweir first minutes in weeks, so it's great to pose a threat and show we can be deadly. We played the worse match in a year and didn't lose to our fiercest rival. I like that.

Alexis showed very interesting things. When everyone is fit he can destroy rivals on the wings, something we were missing a lot.

By the way, the aggression of Madrid players was, again, on the verge of violence. That kung-fu kick of Khedira could have literally destroyed Abidal's face. I don't understand how that wasn't a yellow. And how pepe ended the match without a yellow, too. Marcelo did 2 aggressions without the ball, as usual. And the most pathetic thing (again) was seeing Mourinho moan for EVERYTHING, reasonable or not. I'm sorry to say that I had never found someone so pathetic in this regard in all my life. You just CAN'T moan for Abidal being in the floor when one of your players almost destroys his face and go unpunished. This man has lost any connection with reality.
