eFootball PES 2021 Discussion Thread (CONSOLES)

Also something else very important to mention:

ePES 2022 MUST be equal on PC like it is on PS5/XSX. I can see if PC version has less features that they might try some PR stunt explaining to us how they didn't have enough time and they wanted to focus on the next-gen consoles but they promise ePES 2023 will have all the same features.

I see FIFA 21 and NBA 2k21 PC version will have less features than PS5/XSX launch ones, makes me wonder which features exactly will it be missing.

PC SSD's cannot load the data as fast as PS5 SSD's!

Every year of PES is "make or break", and then the game is half broken, or poor, or just alright, and they patch it half way and then they make another one. Hell, even I, who am generally positive towards even later PES games, thought it was close to death after losing the CL licence. But it seems to be doing alright. They are taking a bit of a loss on the 21 version, compared to other years, although they will save work power it will hardly be enough to counter lower income from sales. Then there will be 2022, and if it won't set the world alight... they will probably go again the year after.

It's going to be a long time before we can play it, but it will hopefully be good for the series. A fresh start was badly needed.

All the emphasis was on the visuals though which is a bit concerning, although pretty much the norm these days.

You know what just hit me right now? I'm dying to see the generic player faces in UE.
Yup, that was one of my first thoughts. I think that's one of the things they'll the care of, because it was a disaster in PES2014. Don't make me post that awful Riquelme model..

In before they all look like Fortnite characters. :D

Well now we can surely say: RIP Fifa!
I mean if it comes to the graphics. UE4 and now UE5 is in a completely different level than Frostbite.
So I'm pretty hyped for PES22. To be honest I don't care about the mods that much. I mean sure, it's good that we have all the Scoreboards, kits etc but pretty sure we can add these and more to PES22 too later because Unreal Engine is way better than FOX when it comes to modding. So I'm not afraid because I'm almost 100% sure that we can add stadiums as well.

BTW Did I missed something or what? Why is everyone is talking about PES21 when it's clear there's not gonna be a PES21? PES20 will get a Season Update a payed Data Pack. But that's all. I know I'm only playing with PES for 3 years but every time when I'm reading these topics people are always complaining and want HUGE changes when it's clear most of them are can't be done for obvious reasons. Thanks to Fifa! Of course the gameplay is sucks sometimes but besides that I can't mentioned other things in PES that gives me headaches except the lag cheaters on MyClub.

So if the Season Update won't be more expensive than 20 euro than I'm okay with this. We don't need a PES game every year because we buy the same game every year. And to be honest Season Update isn't even matter because the modders here can make it for free. I mean it's only a kit and roster update.

PES 21 will be a standalone game, just sold as a discounted PES 20 reskin.

This is good. Konami had to make such an announcement at least a month or two earlier to avoid all these negative emotions and reactions of recent weeks.

I'm glad that we are now officially moving to the Unreal Engine since we all expected it to happen sooner or later. Anyone who has had access to the mobile version of the game has noticed how smooth and realistic the animations are, albeit a limited version of the gameplay. On the one hand, I don't like that I have to wait another year and that I have to stay with PES 2020 for a few more months, but it's better than lying to us that PES 2021 is a new game. It's a bit strange that we have an official announcement of PES 2022 but not of PES 2021 or whatever this 100 MB update will be.

Is not gonna be 100 mb thats was just an active pass from microsoft to all games, we will know soon what exactly is gonna bring us pes 21

What? They never said that. Like I said the Season Update is basically a Data Pack for money and you don't have to buy it because it's only a SEASON update!

I am not sure about pes 21 is gonna just be a game with rosters and kits updates, some sources has said will bring small updates and improves in every game modes

Basically, to translate it: "It will be a standalone game, not a DLC". (It's PESUniverse, so I think it's very trustworthy.

Just some thoughts on modding PES2022, if we can access their files:

We have access to the engine Konami will be using to make the game. You can download unreal engine from the epic site for free. This will give us the same set of tools to mod the game that Konami has used to make it.

Going to have to learn C++ because that is what Unreal Engine is writen in. Udemy has some really good courses on Unreal Engine which go on sale every other month.

Thoughts on AI in PES2022:

I've been using Unreal Engine 4 since they released it for free about 4 or 5 years ago and it is an amazing set of tools they have developed. But that said they have not updated their AI portion of the engine in 4 years, plus there is nothing on there road map for the future developement of this (Fortnite doesn't use AI to the fullest beacause its a PvP game and doesn't require it, which is Epic's game that drives this type of developement). Hopefully this will change in Unreal Engine 5. Their main focuse at Epic right now is on graphics, integrating movies with special effects and archvis (architectural visualization).

Not saying that the AI portion of the engine isn't good, it is based off of behavior trees and also uses 2 systems called AI Perception and Environment Query System (which is the two portions they have not updated. It's still clasified as experimental in engine).

So hopefully Konami can get the best out of the engine, which Epic are good at supporting developers. Since Unreal Engine code is open source and can be downloaded on GitHub, developers can rewrite the base code to change the egine to suit their game.

They didn't make this clear enough haha

As Ameppe says, I suspect AI is not related to a specific engine. If the CPU players actions are badly coded, then a new engine won't change their behaviour from dumb, to good.
A new engine should bring better visuals, but that's not an area of concern in PES 2020, surely? Yes there's some clipping and skating issues, but nothing fundamental in my book, whereas AI player behaviour is a major problem (PES 2020 seems particularly badly affected in this respect, especially in the later patches).

Can the game logic be transferred from engine to engine, or must the game on a new engine be started from scratch?

If you have to start from scratch, then I fear that PES on the new consoles will take some years to evolve to an acceptable level, based on past experience.

Likewise, more powerful consoles won't necessarily improve the AI, as the CPU must still be programmed to do the right thing at the right time. Yes, more memory and processing power should free up resources, but I'd love to know to what extent the current consoles are restricting the game, compared to engine/coding issues. Does this explain why popular features from past games are dropped?

I'd love to think that PES 2021 could be the PS4 version, of what PES 2013 was to the PS3.

It's good that PES 2022 will probably be PS5 only (on Playstation), as releasing PES 2014 on PS3 was a huge error. Who knows where we'd be now if that hadn't happened. PES 2014 was slated at the time, but I've always thought that had a lot to do with the fact that the PS3 couldn't handle it well. PES 2014 could have evolved to a great game. Konami said that it was released on PS3 to satisfy the loyal fan-base, but surely it was really down to the fact that there was a huge existing user base of PS3s. They said that the technology was scaleable to the hardware, but the PC version was much better.
I'll remain optimistic for PES, as there's a lot that it does right, but won't be surprised if history repeats itself in same way in the future. It's been a case of 2 steps forward and at least 1 back for too long now.

Yup, we know nothing in that matter. Depends if they still follow the cpk and dds structure (in terms of graphics), but the process of importing models to the game will probably be different. I find it exciting, we will have a powerful engine in our hands for better mods :)
Cpk isn't a very common format so it'll probably go. DDS could stay or be replaced with a different image file format.

Hahaha, my exact first thought. If they can't even get to 30fps for a single player, in an empty void, for a sizzle trailer... PES 2022 will be launching like PES 2014 (that was 10fps-15fps in cutscenes on PS3). Seriously. I'd bet money on it.

Hopefully, the team that is working on PES on mobile (which is Unreal) can help.

And also, I still think it's a brave decision, and the best decision for the long-term fans. It may even be PES 2023 before they get it close to feeling right... Which is a scary thought. But if they'd stuck with the old engine then it would be even longer.
I have tried to increase the frame rate of the trailer to check how 60fps will look like. Hope they can find the way to increase the frame rate earlier.

No. The assets of Unreal Engine games are compiled, so you would basically need to reverse engineer everything. Unless KONAMI gave us the source code (which obviously won't happen), I fear that PC modding is going to be pretty much dead.

I'm an Unreal Engine game developer so I wanted to comment on how modding will be with Unreal Engine. You are absolutely correct in the first half of your post, we will not be able to edit the game directly in the engine (reverse engineering it will be next to impossible). However, I strongly disagree with the second part of your post. PC Modding will not die with the switch to Unreal Engine, it will actually get much stronger. The files of a game that was made through Unreal Engine and released on the Epic Games store are very easily extractable and editable (the tools to do this already exist). So it should actually be pretty easy to extract most of the files and edit them.
