Gerrard had decided to quit: Reds chief
LIVERPOOL, England, (AFP) - Liverpool Chief Executive Rick Parry revealed Monday how close the club came to losing captain Steven Gerrard.
The England midfielder had been frustrated at Liverpool's trophyless last season in which the Reds were well off the pace in the Premiership, and almost jumped ship, with Chelsea in the hunt for his signature.
Blues chief executive Peter Kenyon and new manager Jose Mourinho had said that they were ready to take the 24-year-old to Stamford Bridge after his inspiring international displays in Euro 2004.
"We're absolutely delighted that Steven is staying. I guess in a way it was the best non-signing we've ever made," Parry told the club's website.
"I think we all feared he was going so it was a very welcome surprise when he told us he wasn't.
"I think he was very close to going and at one point, I think he had decided to go. I'm sure of that and I don't suppose he reached that decision just by reading newspapers so I've no doubt there were all sorts of conversations."
Parry revealed the hard work he had put in to persuading the club's talisman to remain at Anfield.
Gerrard's departure would have been a hige blow to new manger Rafael Benitez, recruited from Spanish champions and UEFA Cup holders Valencia after Gerard Houllier's departure.
Home-grown striker Michael Owen has been stalling on a contract extension and if the captain had walked out, it would have summarised the growing malaise at the lack of success at Anfield and precious gems like Owen could soon have followed through the exit.
"I had a series of meetings with Steven over a number of weeks, which had been very straightforward, and he had been very honest," Parry explained.
"It was refreshing that you could have a real heart-to-heart with a key player. I enjoyed that even if I didn't enjoy some of the messages that were coming back.
"Essentially, he'd expressed his frustration at the end of the season that fourth wasn't good enough. Fourth wasn't good enough for us either so we were at least on the same wavelength.
"There's no doubt he wants to win trophies with Liverpool but at the same time, he wants to win trophies full stop.
"There was a bit of turmoil and it was clear that we needed to work quite hard to persuade Stevie, which we did over a number of weeks. At one point it looked as if we were losing the battle but it's turned out well in the end."
Gerrard will come to Stamford? That would be great!! If it's not rumour again.
