Chelsea players said no to Fabián Ayala

Was there a revolt by Chelsea squad at the idea that yet more players could come to Stamford Bridge - in particular Fabián Ayala? That's what Marca is saying this morning. As a result, continues the article, it would appear that Chelsea have decided that the current team is more than adequate.

It's in the Spanish sports daily this morning: when the Chelsea players heard that the club was moving to sign Valencia captain Fabián Ayala in January, the Blues made their opposition clear at the beginning of this week.

Apparently it was John Terry, who, as acting captain has to be considered as the representative of the players, who made known to Roman Abramovich that the players don't see the need for any new additions to the squad. Marca quotes 'a source close to Abramovich' as saying that "the players feel that there is no need to sign anybody, particularly as the team is working well. Terry said that to our faces. They don't understand why we might be signing a player who is 30 years old at the middle of the season". The same source adds that all negotiations for Ayala were promptly suspended: "the situation today is that there won't be any signing. We don't want to spoil the current team spirit that has developed".

The squad's decision was a consensual one, and Claudio Ranieri agreed. Claudio had already said, before the Newcastle game, that there would be no new signings. Indeed, he is said to consider that any new signing could disrupt the good atmosphere in the Chelsea dressing room. It is this atmosphere that has contributed to the Blue's current run of good results and great performances - and an exceptional team spirit.

Chelsea have therefore pulled out of discussions with Valencia for Fabián Ayala, which has come as a surprise to Valencia. Apparently the coastal club had more or less written off their talismanic captain after a visit from Chelsea representatives. This visit had left Valencia with the sensation that he was as good as gone and that Ayala's departure was inevitable. Since that meeting Valencia had received no news from Chelsea, and the club hadn't heard about any decision by Chelsea not to pursue Ayala, and were, in fact, already looking at several possible replacements.

Meanwhile, a short distance away from Valencia down the Mediterranean coast lies the modest Primera club Villarreal. There, a young midfielder by the name of César Arzo is claiming that Chelsea are interested in him. Indeed, he told the Spanish news agency 'Efe' that "the offer from Chelsea is very serious". Although his intention is to stay at Villareal ("I wouldn't want to leave Villarreal"), he also warns that "my agent has told me that Chelsea's interest is developing, and it is hard to see it not growing to fruition". So he's hedging his bets there. Quoted in a local newspaper, he says that "My agent has told me that Chelsea have asked about me, and I can't say anything more, although I want to make it clear that I owe a lot to Villarreal, who are informed of everything."

Actually Villarreal are stating that they have no knowledge of any possible offer from Chelsea for Arzo. According to the club, they have only been told by Arzo's family, but Villarreal have also acknowledged that if Arzo wants to leave, the club's possibilities of holding him back are negligible. Especially since, given his age, he doesn't have a professional contract.

So who is Cesar Arzo? Well, he's 17, he's made 2 starts for the first team this season after coming through the youth team and the B team, er, he's 1m 86 tall and weighs 72 kilos and plays in an unspecified midfield position. Frankly that is all we can find about him, so it's impossible to judge whether he would be a useful addition to the squad. One for the future?

You don't know what you've got, till you lose it, eh ZZ?

Zidane: Real missing Makelele

Real Madrid midfielder Zinedine Zidane believes the sale of Claude Makelele to Chelsea is responsible for his club's slump in form.

Madrid's 4-1 thrashing by Sevilla last Sunday brought storms of criticism on to the head of coach Carlos Queiroz for his selection policy.

However, Queiroz's options have been limited by the club's transfer policy that has left him with only four available defenders. Queiroz was also handicapped by the departure of defensive midfielder Makelele during the summer.

Although David Beckham has surprised many with his work-rate and willingness to sacrifice himself for the team, his partnership with Guti in midfield still lacks a proven ball-winner.

The absence of Makelele is keenly felt, said the Chelsea midfielder's fellow French international Zidane.

"We are missing him," Zidane told magazine Onze Mundial. "He was an essential element in our tactics and he has not been replaced.

"We all try to compensate collectively, but the work he did in defence was vital, even though he thought nobody valued that work."

Yeah, i don't think we are going to sign any names sign January. If we were to sign a player, it would be a youth player, someone who wouldn't fit into the first team picture this season.

I'd be suprised if Chelsea spent in Jan, The players are starting to settle now, which is evident in the way they are playing.

I see T is playing down the title chances but I really think you's are gonna win it this year.

Its obvious Real are missing Makelele, the way they treated that player was terrible, I think Real are gonna struggle over the next couple of years unless Perez changes his attitude.

Anyway Fellas it aint that long till Chelsea's biggest test of the season, playing The Champions, Ive gotta admitt I never look forward to Chelsea games be-it home or away and this one is no different in fact this ones worse, your the type of team that ive been happy to avoid due to our woeful performances, just gotta hope we improve before then ey.....

I agree there. Arsenal could put a team of one legged lepers out against us and still come out 2-1 winners with the luck they have against us.....but your lot are a very different story.

To be honest though, my real focus is Southampton the week before. If we win that one, then we can start looking at the Man U game. ;)

haha, well thats a good sign, a bunch of confident chelsea supporters, you blues are probably going to stay undefeated (forgetting the defeat to the gunners because T wants to forget about it ;)) for the rest of the season, we red devils went the entire season with i think 3 defeats? and already we have 2, soo i dont think it is time to call this a downturn yet, but it's getting there :(

That's it Prof!? Is that all you're going to venture? ;)

I would say probably Jimmy and Eidur up front tomorrow, Jospeh getting a start in midfield. No Crespo, Veron or Geremi because of jet-lag.

Eidur: I'm Staying
By Matt Hughes, Evening Standard
21 November 2003

Eidur Gudjohnsen today reaffirmed his commitment to Chelsea in the face of further speculation that he will leave the club in January. Gudjohnsen's future has been in doubt since Chelsea signed Adrian Mutu and Hernan Crespo in the summer, but he is adamant he is staying. Middlesbrough and Manchester City have both been linked with the Iceland striker and it was reported yesterday that Newcastle were preparing a £5million bid to lure him away in the transfer window.

Gudjohnsen signed a contract extension in the summer and is desperate to stay at Stamford Bridge. He said: "I was given an extra year on improved terms and I want to end the speculation. It's clear I'm staying here and that's final.

"The manager's told me I'm part of his plans. I wouldn't be coming off the bench or starting at all if he didn't rate me. It's a big squad and we all have to be patient. "With a squad like this you can't expect to play every week, but whenever I've played I've scored. That can't hurt.
"I love it here and I've always said that. It's the club I want to be at and if I was ever to leave it wouldn't be in these circumstances.

"I've a lot more to show for myself." Gudjohnsen has six goals in five starts this season and could get another opportunity to impress at Southampton tomorrow. Manager Claudio Ranieri has kept the same team for the past two matches but is expected to make changes for this trip, with one eye on next Wednesday's Champions League match against Sparta Prague at Stamford Bridge.

A draw against Prague would guarantee Chelsea's place in the second stage and Ranieri is likely to rest Crespo, Mutu and Juan Sebastian Veron, presenting opportunities to Gudjohnsen, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and the in-form Joe Cole. Gudjohnsen added: "Whenever I get an opportunity I'm determined to take advantage and know I have to do that. "The rotation is working and it's good for everyone.

"Obviously, we'd all like to play more but we're all working towards the same goal, which is to bring some silverware to Chelsea. "If at the end of the season I can hold up a trophy I'll be happy that I've played my part."

No idea. I don't even have any idea on the team, never mind the result!

Maybe Melchiot will come in, maybe Mutu will get a start.

There's another thread about this match and there i said that i think (unfortunately) that Man Utd will win this match...in my opinion, Man Utd as a team is more experienced and i would'nt be amazed if they would have a few (dirty) tricks up their sleeves...
If they loose this match i don't think that it would be dramatic for Chelsea (it would be dramatic for the premiership however)...i'm sure they don't expect silverware in the first season of this new team...

1-0 against Manu will do me too. ;)

Prague first, Prof! ;)

I didn't go, but it was apparently a pretty solid performance. We did let Phillips in with a few minutes to go, but thankfully he missed. Lampard, Terry and (Heyyyyy) Makelele were the star men. Let's hope they keep it up on Wednesday.

True, there is Prague. If we win this, which i do hope we will, we should be in a strong position for qualification, regardless of the Besiktas game, which, who knows will be played when and where.

LOL

Chelsea move for Ronaldo

Roman Abramovich has once again targeted Real Madrid striker Ronaldo. Reports in the Spanish press suggest Chelsea’s owner is ready to offer the Spanish giants £27m plus defender William Gallas for the former Inter star. Ronaldo recently admitted that Chelsea had contacted his agent and that he was following their results with much interest.

No way we'd let Gallas go, surely? How many decent defenders are there in the world today? Much fewer than there are strikers. Put your money away Roman, we're doing fine.

Prof, is that the Irish fella who won eurovision in your Avatar?

Very little news at the moment. Rumours that Inter are about to transfer list Vieri and that we'll pick him up and Jimmy going to Inter or Barcelona. Quite quiet!

I'd like to see Jimmy go and Forssell return rather than us going after another striker. What could Mikael do with the service he'd get back at the Bridge?

True, Forssell is getting valuable first team experience, but they're going to want to buy him in the summer, i'm sure. As for the Ronaldo/Gallas thing. I'd rather not see William go, especially with Desailly reaching for his bus pass. As it is, there are only 3 CBs to cover that position (incl John Terry). On the other hand, you can see Real's eye lighting up at the prospect of getting...wait for it....a defender, and a damn good one at that. One that could easily fit into their style of play. All this talk of buying more strikers when we aren't selling any gets me worried though. :l

Oh btw, Terry, the guy in my avater isn't a Eurovision singer, it's Olaf from the film Clerks. He's singing his song called "Beserker." here's a small clip of him singing it. http://www.viewaskew.com/movies/clerks/berz1.mov

"Did he just say 'make fück?'" I absolutely love that film!

My eyes are letting me down..... :(

Have you seen the original ending to the film? If you haven't, don't.

I got it on DVD a while back and it was one of the first things I looked at. Thank fcuk they changed it.

Err......C'mon you Blues!

No Johnson and no Veron tomorrow. Worryingly though,(Heyyyyyy!)Makelele might not play because of a neck injury. I thought he was made of lead!

Sods law dictates he'll miss the game against the mancs too (like when we were missing Gallas, Terry and Desailly against the goons). Bugger.....

Hmm, we'll have to keep them busy by attacking then. No other proven DMFs, Geremi might be back in I suppose. Melchiot for Johnson and J. Cole for Veron? We need a win, don't want to have to get something out of the Besiktas game.
