According to the Beeb sports, Smertin should be signing today for a £4.2 million fee. Although, for some reason he may be loaned out to Portsmouth. :l
Terry, where did you hear/read that Torrado talk?

Planet Football, Prof.

With regard to our midfield, Lampard is not a defensive minded player, he likes to run with the ball and creates a lot of our attacking moves. Petit is a good player, but always injured.

Finally, this media bias about us not giving youth and last years first teamers a chance, is utter nonsense. When the mancs signed Djemba-Djemba, Ronaldo or Kleberson, not a word was said bemoaning the fates of Chadwick et al, or even established squad players like Fortune. We are no different in that we are creating competiton for places.

No more tabloid driven tripe in this thread from now on, please.

That's not entirely true. Our starting line-up was still Butt, Keane, Scholes, Giggs and Ruud not Kleberson, Djemba, Ronaldo and Bellion.

The chelsea team looked completely different to last seasons.

C'mon T do you not think its abit different, Chadwick didnt help us to the Champioship and we just f*cked him off, it was so obvious he wasnt gonna make the grade two seasons ago so he's been farmed out to a 1st Div side. Fergie fought for Fortune to get another permit and we'll see more of him this year.

Last years Chelsea team got them to a top four place, thats some achievement and i bet at the start of that season someone told you that team we're gonna do that after not being able to sign anyone you would've bit their hand off, and now alot of them are uncertain of their place in the team.

From last years first XI, only Melchiot could feel aggreived. Le Saux is no longer there, and Babayaro and Petit are injured. Everyone else got a game.

No, they are uncertain of their places now - but that is because we are in a position where there is now competition for places. What I'm saying is why are we thought of as out of order for signing talented players to come into the squad, but when the mancs do it, it is called 'strenthening'.

Must it always come down to slagging utd off? :(

...i can just see the quotes now, folowed by 'YES!' and if it's Zico then a few  s thrown in for good measure :/

Nah, you're alright, pal, you're okay with me *said in voice of Mr Burns orphan son*

Carlton Cole on loan to Charlton for the season. At least he'll get some regular football - looks like we are clearing the decks for a galactico then.

Yeah, just read that :x . I thought tjis was going to be his season, taking over from JFH if he fell out of favour. I would have rather loaned out Forsell again, rather than big Carlton. I was looking forward to seeing him terrorize European defences in the CL  . Perhaps it means someone else is arriving upfront. What do you reckon the chances are with this Torrado bloke Terry?

"galactico's" lol!!!

linked with Vieri, Viera, Davids etc, but you bought Cole and Johnson lol!!!

Seriously though Charlton have got a good deal there, wish he would've been there to face city, they looked pretty thin going forward....

but Di Canio - Cole  Worth the admission....

How longs the deal for??

Almost as bad as having Ronaldinho 'almost' signed up, then being forced to buy his mate instead - and a portuguese kid with 20 games experience (and one trick) for 12 million.

Prof, an Italian journalist said that Vieri wanted to wait and see if we qualified for the CL before making a decision. Crespo looks the more likely because Inter can make a profit on what they paid for him last year.

Torrado deal is merely a bit of a sniff around to see if he fancies it, but if we get good vibes, we could go for him.

David Bellion anyone? And are we talking about England internationals Cole and Johnson?

They wanted to build a team around Kleberson? Not Rivaldo, Ronaldinho or Ronaldo? Just Kleberson? The Kleberson who was turned down by Leeds and Newcastle?

What Brazilian papers do you read!?

"They" didn't get relegated, West Ham did. If you stuck your beloved van Nistlerooy in their, he would have gone down too. It's the team, not the player. Before, people were slagging off Chelsea for buying foreign players, now we buy Cole, Johnson and Bridge, and now you're slagging again. What's the problem? In a few years, the Chelsea back line will be the England back line bar one, including Terry as captain. So that can only be a good thing that they'll be playing togetther at club level. :)

Bellion aint 1st team material yet, even Fergie's admitted it so you might aswell list all the reserves

Well Rivaldo is abit past it now, but the Brazilian coach said that Kleberson (aswell as Ronaldinho etc) he meant that players like the ones you mentioned cant perform without people like Kleberson in the team.

Anyway I was only having a laff, you asked for it with the "galactico's" comment.......

Vannizzle, if you or anyone you know, uses the term 'galactico's' seriously, then I would suggest seeking professional help.

Would you prefer it if I used the term 'International striker of some renoun'?

I haven't been touchy, merely pointing out your inaccuracies and blinkered viewpoint. To prove I'm not touchy, here's a

Happy now?

He is on loan for the rest of the season.

Anyone heard the latest? If the Crespo deal doesn't materialise. Apparently Chelsea will be launching a substantial bid for Zlatan of Ajax. They hope to offer more than Roma and Lyon did to make the offer to tempting to pass up.

My 'spies' tell me Crespo could be on his way over today or tomorow for a medical etc. A fee has been agreed with Inter (£25 mill approx.) and personal terms have already been discussed.

If it all goes smoothly, first game should be v Spurs.

No, 13th of September. I'm not sure if he needs a work permit. Has he got any ...ahem....Italian great-grandparents?

I expect so. I reckon Claudio will go for 4-4-2

Mutu, JFH and Joe Cole will start, Veron on the bench with Eidur.

It goes on and on and on!

Chelsea to meet Madrid on Saturday

By EuroBlue
Date: 21/8/2003

Chelsea are still interested in Claude Makelele. Despite probably having closed a deal for Alexei Smertin, and being said to be close to Hernan Crespo, Roman Abramovich is set to meet Real Madrid's President in Majorca over the weekend to try to push forward a further signing.

In today's 'Marca' (or the Real Madrid 'Pravda') journalists have managed to contact Claudio Ranieri to ask him about Claude Makelele. Of course, the bit that Marca highlight is when Ranieri says "Above everything, we respect Madrid", followed by "Madrid is a friendly club, and we don't want to create problems". Nevertheless, as regards Claude Makelele, Ranieri refuses to be drawn, one way or another.

It would appear that Chelsea have not ruled out Makelele. Tactically, however, Chelsea have understood that, whilst the player was causing trouble at the club by refusing to train, it was better to take a step back. For that reason, Ranieri is quite cagey, measuring every one of his words when the Marca hacks try to press him. "Chelsea are very tranquil about this issue. Above everything, we respect Madrid", he says.

Needless to say, the journalists persist in that line of inquiry, to try to draw Claudio to say something about Makelele. "We are friends of Real Madrid. We will stay like this, and that's all", although he does add, very vaguely, that "at the end, everything will work out".

"We don't want to create any problems with this issue, and, in addition, Real Madrid are a friendly club. I would insist that we greatly respect them". To try to halt the probing, Ranieri says "I'm sorry, but stop those questions because I won't say anything else on the subject".

Meanwhile, Real Madrid managed to persuade France's coach Jacques Santini not to line up Makelele in Les Bleus friendly against Switzerland last night. Makelele, of course (like all good French players) has been busy talking to the press about his club whilst away on International duty. He states in 'L'Equipe' that "I think that I have always shown an exemplary attitude towards the club, and I want to state that, at the moment, people are saying many lies about me".

According to his promise, Makelele will return to Spain today, and will also return to training with Madrid - even though he insists that he wants to leave the club. Or receive a pay rise if he stays. His situation can only be resolved once he is back in the fold at the club - which will be seen to have won a battle with the midfielder.

'L'Equipe' goes on to reveal that Real President Florentino Pérez will be meeting with Roman Abramovich on Saturday in Mallorca (it's a tough life) and that Roman will probably come with an offer of €20 million for Makelele. Jorge Valdano, Real's Director of Sport, is denying that such a meeting will take place.

That said, it is probable that Real will be looking to offload the embarrassing midfielder. Indeed, the other Madrid daily, 'As', is beginning to consider alternatives if Makelele moves on, and they decide that the best one would be … Patrick Vieira, who's style of play is similar, and is a great age to make his mark at Madrid. The only problem that they fail to point out: Patrick Vieira signed a new contract with Arsenal only last week…

Huh? I'd choose Crespo over Zlatan any day. Zlatan's a talented player, but he's too arrogant. Crespo's a much better player (and likeable as well, hehe).
