Chelsea complete SWP signing

Shaun Wright-Phillips became a Chelsea player this lunchtime after signing a five year contract.

Arriving at Chelsea today with father Ian Wright and agent Mitchell Thomas, he completed his medical and is now due to fly out with the rest of the team to the USA tomorrow, Tuesday.

With a pre-season game and training already under his belt for Manchester City, he is ready to be involved straight away. Chelsea’s next game is against Milan in Boston next Sunday.

He has asked to play in the Number 24 shirt. “It’s the date my son was born,” he explained. “He loves football.”

He knows plenty of the Chelsea team from England, England Under 21s, his kit sponsor and his youth — he was playing against and becoming friends with Joe Cole when they were still at school.

He knows he is going to be competing for places with Cole, Arjen Robben and Damien Duff. “That’s fine by me,” he says, “I never expected to be in anywhere and walk into any team to be honest with you. Competition is just healthy really and will help make me a better player. I just want to try and get some medals and be a regular part of the team. I want to play well for myself and for the fans, and for the coaching staff.”

Chief executive Peter Kenyon added: “We’re delighted that Shaun has joined us. He’ll be a fantastic asset to the team and squad. This carries on the Chelsea policy of investing in young, top English talent.”

A problem Chelsea has is that they're almost buying all these young players as if they're just being bought so that other teams cant have them.
When you look at a squad as big as Chelsea's, you're supposed to have an experienced player and a young player for each position. For example Man Utd have Giggs on the left wing and now have Ji-Sung Park as the young alternative who is gonna be brought up to be the new Giggs. And since Keane is old, we're now looking for someone who is young and can potentially replace him in the future.

Chelsea now have 3 great young wingers and unless one of them plays in another position, someone is gonna be on the bench. And this then means its gonna hurt the development of one of those players. Sadly, it looks like it'll be Duff.

Chelsea lack experience right now.

Hmm, we did not have an older experienced player last season in any position other than the midfield in Makelele, yet we did just fine, where as you are saying we need one. Just like ManU who have plently of experienced players, yet still didnt win a trophy.

I can understand what you're saying Sulph but when things get tough (Which they didn't last season for you guy's) you need older heads who are used to that kind of situation to pull you through. If you hit a spell this season where you lose a couple of games in a row you'll see what I mean.

Why wouldnt Makelele be considered experienced?? THat man has a beautiful record and has been one of the best for his role. Crespo can also be classified as experienced after playing in 3 leagues and holding a strong record for both club and country.

And ian has only been his adopted father for about the last 7/8 years, so he didnt in theory 'bring him up', not that matters either,

7/8 years eh funny how he adopted him and his brother in 1983 then?!

Im really trying to be happy for SWP but i just feal betrayed!

I wouldn't feel betrayed mate. You should feel good about developing a player Forest dumped. All talented players eventually move on and up. The kid is just trying to realise his dreams - and good luck to him.

I wouldn't feel betrayed, the only time i would ever feel betrayed is if a player came out and said "i would never move to such and such a club" or "i will never leave", similar to the wayne rooney saga, now thats betrayal!

I personally think that SWP will turn into an even more awesome player under mourinho, i mean look at cole. he was a fringe player and then turned into premiership player of the month etc, and in my opinion SWP has more potential to become a bigger star than joe cole considerin that SWP is a very direct player.

And of course, this can only benefit englands chances next year! :)

Its not that id have been more than happy for him to move onto bigger and better things if hed have come out and saidhe wanted to move for trophies ect! but instead we had him saying how he wanted to see out his contract and was really happy to stay with us! we all know City aren't in Europe and we're not going to challenge for the title but he knew all that before! Chelsea are the champions, have loads of money and will be going for Champions League! but we've know that aswell! So i just dont know what suddenly changed his mind in 24 hours?

Man Utd have too many experienced players. For how many years has our best midfield consisted of Keane, Scholes and Giggs? Thats our problem. We need young players to replace our older ones.
That doesnt mean we dont need people like Keane cuz he's still important.

Its funny how people say that arguably the most important player at Chelsea has been Makalele. Another experienced player. Chelsea are on a uphill ride. The players are gonna be experiencing new things such as playing in cup finals for the first time or attempting to go undefeated for a whole season. Once you get near the end, its the experienced players that are gonna drag you through that tough time when the younger and inexperienced players are gonna get jaded.
IMO, Chelsea have just been very smart and clever when they did things which is all down to Mourinho. And this is why they are so successful. They've used clever tactics to get their way and Jose proved this by doing the same with Porto.

There are many other characteristics needed that IMO, Chelsea dont have.
Arsenal have a nice balance of experience, youth, physical presence (not anymore after Vieira left), etc which is important when your endurance is tested. If you look at Liverpool in the CL semis, they were the more passionate and desperate to win in the game. And if you looks at Man Utd, the way they almost play is as if the manager just told the players to go out there and do your thing. Plus those three teams know what its like to be on the losing end of things and have their hopes shatter so they all have an extra incentive to find that second wind when you reach the latter partsd of the season.

Chelsea players havent been through all that. Which is why if you get someone that is experienced you get someone who has a better understand of football and how to handle certain situations that Chelsea havent experienced before.

I was thinking this too, I was actually really impressed with his attitude. Oh well. Only thing I can come up with is that the club asked him to accept the deal, for the money. Anyway, I always like to see England internationals linking up, good for 2006!

If Gerrard had joined, that probably would have been the future England midfield at Chelsea with Joe Cole, Gerrard, Lampard and SWP.

Lets hope that atleast the England strike force can link up at Man Utd.

sheva has been spotted arguing with a Milan official, this has caused the press to specualate that Chelsea will be primed to re-open interest after having a £50+mill bidded knocked back.

Now if they get Sheva, shit its gonna be one tough league this year.

Sheva once said that if he leaves he definately wont play for Chelsea. He'll go somewhere else but not there.

But then again, money talks.

I really don't think sheva was ever going to come to chelsea, and i dont even think chelsea have considered bidding yet, unless they know for certain that sheva is going to leave....again, stupid media speculation.
Pisses me off so much!

Sulph is probably his right-hand man. He does all the dirty work for him like tapping up players.

Imagine how much he would pay you for a job like that. You'd probably earn as much as the players.

Essien sure is desperate

Lyon midfielder Michael Essien is convinced he will secure his dream move to Chelsea this summer - even though the French club are refusing to budge from an asking price of £32million.

'I think the transfer will be made,' Essien said.

'I am convinced that I will go to Chelsea but in the meantime I am experiencing difficult times.

'I can't wait until everything is over.

'I also spoke with Didier Drogba and he wants me to come.'

Aulas has instructed Chelsea to either put up or shut up.

'They must be fast now, I will be back in France on Thursday, it's been going on for too long,' he said.

'If Chelsea want Michael, it's now or never. The price is fixed.'

'That's £32million or nothing. We will sell Michael at the price of Steven Gerrard.

'There will not be any other offer. The player can also be transferred for £17.3million in a year's time. This is the fixed price and there will not be any change to that either.'

Chelsea might as well wait a year and get him for a lot cheaper. Plus you get to see if he's consistant enough to continue playing the way he has played last season at Lyon rather than taking the risk of buying him and finding out he isnt as good as they make him out to be. I mean wasnt Dhorasoo French player of the year too?

Chelsea would be dumb to pay any more than £17million for him.

He's still young so he'll calm down eventually at Lyon.

Chelsea dont need him if they have Makalele. Next season would be when they really need Essien.

Absolutely, i'd tell Lyon to get lost. Nobody is worth that much. I hope they have a grumpy Essien to deal with

Yeah but with every club charging chelsea (and chelsea paying) over the odds for nearly every player, you cant blame Lyon for asking for that much.

But then you cant blame Chelsea for using their heads when they pull back from the offer.
