Boxing Talk!!

Froch v Abraham

Really enjoyed the fight, Froch outclassed him in every way. He had a lethal jab and didn't let Abraham in at all. You can really tell the 5 months of intense training has paid off. Impressed and happy he's bringing the goods back home.

As for going forward, I'm still sceptical about how he'll beat the likes of Andre Ward and Julian Bute who are bound to be asking for a fight soon. His defence is still non-existent and no matter how good a chin he has he won't handle the speed of these fellas. I do think, however, that a Kessler re-match will be on the cards next year, which he is more than capable of winning.

Wladimir Klitschko is fighting Dereck Chisora on Saturday and I'm expect nothing like a victory (usual Klitschko style) for Wladimir. They really hype Chisora at the moment (in Germany) and it almost sounds like he is the new Tyson, really aggressive and confident, at least Chisora has a good record so far (14(KO9)-0-0). But I think he is just another hand-picked opponent for Wladimir and honestly, I would love to see Wladimir fighting against Tomasz Adamek (good heavyweight run) or Odlanier Solís (and of course David Haye). The division needs a big fight imo.

The fight is off now.

Klitschko-Chisora off
By Karl Freitag

WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko has suffered an injury forcing the cancellation of Saturday’s title defense against Dereck Chisora on Saturday in Mannheim, Germany. If or when the fight will be rescheduled is not yet determined. Bernd Bönte, Managing Director of Klitschko Management Group GmbH, informed Fighnews.com that the injury “is an abdominal muscle tear two inches long.”

Further information has now been released…

After an initial diagnosis, Klitschko suffered a torn abdominal muscle on his left side during his afternoon training session on Wednesday. “The abdominal muscle is injured and therefore Wladimir Klitschko will not be able to fight on Saturday,” says Dr. Sven Roessing, orthopedic specialist at university hospital Mannheim, Germany. Klitschko will have to pause for about 4 – 6 weeks. It is the second time in his professional career Wladimir Klitschko had to cancel a fight due to an injury, the first being in 2001 one week before a December 1 bout in New York City against David Izon due to a shoulder injury.

Khan V Maidana, What do our local experts think then? I think Khan will win but Maidana is quite relentless (See V Ortiz) and could just keep coming at Khan.

It's a tough one this. The smart money is Khan on points, or late stoppage, but Maidana hits like a truck, and Roach knows this. Khan's people tried to avoid this fight for obvious reasons, and the reality of that hesitance may come back to haunt them. Amir has never had the best set of whiskers, and I've believed that from his amateur days when he was floored in training on more than one occasion. The Limond fight only rubberstamped that belief, and Prescott compounded it. It's a very dangerous fight for Amir, probably tougher than Bradley and Alexander, simply because of the dynamite in Maidana's fists.

I'm really looking forward to this, and I'm not sure that Khan can stay away for the distance to be honest, and I truly believe it will only take one shot. So although the smart money is on Khan, I cant help thinking Maidana will put him to sleep.

Wlad cancels a fight eh? Wonder if that'll stop some of the Klit fanboys from dissing Haye for his cancellation previously.

As for Khan v Maidana, well the fact Amir's with Freddie means he'll be 100x the boxer he was when he got KTFO in 1 round against Prescott, but no matter of training can stop you being chinny, so either way it'll be an exciting fight, can't wait :)

We did see Amir dominating Manny in sparring which was quite surprising, but without the headgear it's a different matter...

Good stuff lads.

If I had to put money on it, it would be Khan points, winning with the 1,2 from the outside. But I'm not a betting man, so I'll go with Maidana KO Round 7. :)

Khan vs Maidana
Fantastic fight!! Fair play to Khan, it was close but he showed he has got a chin after all and proved a lot of people wrong. He did take some serious punches though and at times he was lucky to stay in the fight. I thought he was gone at one point towards the end and I don't think there would have been too many complaints if they'd given Maidana the win. Saying that, Khan finished well and fought well so I'm pleased for him.

DeGale vs Smith
This guy gets some serious hate but he's pretty good to be fair, he looked a class above Smith. Reminds me of Khan in the sense he did well at the Olympics but nobody seems to rate or like him at all so he'll constantly be trying to prove a point in the pro ranks. I think he could be a decent fighter and people should get behind him.

Hugely impressive win for Amir, could have been far more impressive and one sided if he'd refused to trade with Maidana and he took a lot of huge shots he really didn't need to, but it seemed that he wanted to so he could excise the ghost of Breidis Prescott, I'm sure he's sick and tired of that knockout being mentioned in every interview, sick and tired of his chin being questioned in every interview, this fight has to have answered his staunches critics, yes of course he was hurt, badly hurt, but to survive being that hurt, hit with such huge punches and not go down was massively impressive IMO and it ended up being a well deserved win, hopefully from now on he can feel he doesn't need to prove anything to people and he can box and move and grind out late stoppage/points wins if he needs to without getting too hurt himself.

I must admit, I was very impressed with his whiskers, and I still cannot fathom how he took those shots. As a fighter, you can only really strengthen your neck muscles, and your legs to give you a stronger base. You dont just grow a great set of whiskers, but thats what Khan seemed to have done. Very strange. It's not like he was riding the shots either, he was taking them bang on the money. I think the hardest shot was landed right at the very end of the 10th, he was very hurt with that one, and lucky there was only a few seconds left.

I was really impressed with Khan after that fight, and I'm not a big fan to be honest, but credit where credit's due. I always felt Khan would take the points victory, but I knew at some point late in the fight Maidana would get through, he always does. And he did. It was a couple of rounds later than I expected, but what happened in the 10th was always on the cards. Full credit to Khan for getting through that though, because I honestly didnt believe he would.

He still has alot of work to do on his defence though, he is wide open for the uppercut, and needs to bring that elbow across, but I'm sure that will be the top of Freddie's 'To-Do-List.'

I dont believe he took the shots to prove to people he could though Placebo, you dont do that, that's suicide against the likes of the Maidana. He took the shots, because he had no choice, he couldnt defend them.

Do you guys know what is the boxing match of the Super Six Tournament that just started?

I know they were doing the Super Six for another weight division

Absolutely not, I'm talking more about some of the earlier rounds where he stopped boxing and moving and seemed to let Maidana land some punches (including some nasty uppercuts), then after about the 6th or 7th he started defending those better, then of course he got a bit tired/sloppy and took that hellacious right hand in the 10th that would have put many a fighter down (and would have put Amir down a couple of years back).

You mean the bantamweight tournament? That is just 2 semis and a final as far as I'm aware, the two semis aired on Showtime at the weekend:

Vic Darchinyan (35-2-1) vs Abner Mares (20-0-1)
~ IBO Bantamweight Title ~

Yonnhy Perez (20-0-1) vs Joseph Agbeko (27-2-0)
~ IBF Bantamweight Title ~

I have both fights but haven't watched them yet so no spoilers please!

Darchinyan fights are almost always exciting, he has a very unique style as well, I'll upload this one and should be able to upload the other one as well shortly, stay tuned!

AWESOME

Thank you very much

do you have the other fight?

Khan vs. Maidana

Oustanding fight. I really thought after this vicious overhand right in the 10th round that Maidana will score a K.O. But Amir proved me wrong, survived the round and "comes back" with some nice looking combos.
And like Placebo said... I really hope that Amir on this point in his career feels free to fight is fights to his own taste without having to take care of the media criticizing his chin.

On this point I'm really looking forward to Bradley vs. Alexander :)

By the way... I really love Showtime's bantamweight tournament... great sport!!!

Spoilers to both fights:

What do you guys think about the outcomes of both fights? Mares really surprised me... and it was a spectacular fight. Some drama in the early rounds and a thrilling fight till the end. Only Darchinyan complaining about the ref was kind a turn off for me.
Perez on the other side (and fight) showed that he is a great sportsman. He do not expect Josephs gameplane and accept it. All my respect for this great man.
