Arsenal Thread

We had the better chances and created more also had more possession etc. So I think we definately deserved to win the game. But yes we need to be more deadly in attack. Not saying we played amazingly, it was dissapointing, but it still wasn't that bad. But I was hoping for more.

Our new players need to bed in and plus we have two players back that were suspended. We needed the win and we got it, now we just have to build on it.

I'm sorry to hear that. Really. Mourinho is an idiot and what he said about Guardiola was pathetic. Anyone giving credit to his words it's just a fanboy.

Mourinho won a CL with Porto with VERY dodgy decisions in the semifinal against Deportivo. Should Mourinho be ashamed of that tile as well? Mourinho bitterness is that of a bad loser.

Should Sacchi return also his CL trophy because there was a wrong ref deicison at the Bernabeu 20 years ago?

Has any team won any trophy without a single decision in favor? Do you really think Barcelona has not been the fair winner in 2009 and 2011? Really? It's very sad to hear that, then.

About the UEFA conspiracies, do you remember how Barcelona had to go by bus for 25 hours to go to Milan to play the CL semifinal against Inter in 2010, because of the volcano, arriving to Milan only 3 hours before the match? UEFA could have postponed at least 1 day the match, as they DID indeed for teams that had to play far from home. Did they? Nope.

We're getting as many decisions in our favor as we have against. It's simply that we win a lot. The media won't talk about the matches that Barcelona wins even if the ref was against them. That doesn't sell newspapers.

Overall, I think the biggest teams always drag critics that can't stand the situation for some reason.

Just to clarify matters, drekkard: I'm definitely not a fan of Mourinho! To me, he's the most classless bag of shit. And that poke in the eye thing against Barcelona was the final straw for me. There isn't a way to defend his actions.

Having said that, don't think I agree with him when he said Guardiola needs to win a CL fairly. I just said that I can understand him, I know where he's coming from. He won the CL with Porto, a bit of a light weight team, against all odds, having to beat Man United away and all. When we talk about this current Barcelona team, we're talking about one of the strongest teams we have ever seen. That team is too good to beat as it is and they certainly don't need a helping hand. So when decisions go in favour of Barcelona, it's very frustrating and overwhelming for the opposing team.

I still think UEFA has a friendly stance towards Barcelona, as the top entertainers, the most attractive side to watch, and so on. The volcano thing caught everyone by surprise, and it was always going to be trouble to postpone the match at the last minute... maybe Inter had to play on Saturday, I really don't know what went on there.
But what I do know is that UEFA gave much importance for the "Eduardo dive" in a much less important match, a CL qualifier against Celtic and gave him a retrospective ban based on video evidence. Meanwhile Busquets play acting was clearly caught on camera and still went unpunished. I see a big contrast overall in the way UEFA has been treating some teams.

There's no reason to be dwelling too much over this issue with you, because you obviously watched all Barcelona games, which I didn't do. On the other hand, I watch as many Arsenal matches as I can, and I sense there's something wrong with the way UEFA has been handling Arsenal - even if I don't compare it with Barcelona or any other team.

And before you think I'm a hater, I'm not. In fact, Barcelona was my 2nd favourite in Europe for a long time and I followed them very closely in 99-2000, during Rivaldo's and the Dutch legion days. Back then, the only downside for me was that manager Van Gaal and his attitude. Nowadays, I think Barcelona is much better than before, and one of the strongest sides I've ever witnessed, but I just don't have the same connection as before.

Well, moving on to today's match, I think it didn't look good for us. It was only Swansea at home, yet I feel we were lucky to walk out with all 3 points. It was only down to a goal gifted to us in a bizarre situation, a real cock up by their goalkeeper. Credit to Arshavin for taking it showing no mercy. But overall, we were unconvincing. We didn't create too many chances and they brought a lot of danger to Szczesny. That guy Sinclair dribbled past Sagna at will! I can't remember a single time Sagna got an advantage over him.
Overall, Arsenal has lots of work ahead.

Big tests coming up with two away games, need to play much better in those games than today though.

Going to be tough against Dortmund.

Yeap, much much better. We lack a lot of sharpness up front and creating chances.
Today Arshavin looked lively, not because of the goal, but he was the only one creating chances. He put Walcott through twice and delivered a good cross to RVP, who had a mixed match. His best moment came in that shot off the post.
Anyways, Arshavin did what we should be expecting of him: being active in the attack. There were moments when he showed his usual laziness and some others where he tried to help defense without much success.

Our new guys did well today. I liked Mertesacker, looked serious and solid. Arteta showed some good movement and passes, but vanished in the 2nd half. Yossi came on later and had little time, but showed some good things and provided Gibbs with a good chance.
Santos isn't match fit yet, but he probably saw how hard he has to work to bench Gibbs, who had a good match IMO. And he has some quality going forward too, it showed in that excellent cross to Chamakh, who almost scored at his best attribute.
I was surprised to see Chamakh coming in instead of Park Ju Young. I want to see how the Korean will do, but I reckon he will be more dangerous than Chamakh.

Yep , 3pts ! Theo almost had a cheeky goal ,but was a great save by their defender to pick it out. Arteta looks good n refreshing I think Ramsey could of been a hero if he connected w/ his passes and attempts. He went for glory instead of an open RVP :JAY: . Jack is stronger and more influential Song n Gervinho will be back I expect a more enjoyable match :SNACK: with them on the pitch.

Andre going forward is smarter than Gibbs , but Gibbs will improve. I give today's performance :TU: win by any means!

Just came back from the Emirates. lovely game. Arteta was awsome and Ashavin was surprisingly good! We was nowhere near our best but right now, i take a 1:0 every day of the week.

Some pics below. Our new CB is a monster!

Good stuff Jonney! Very nice pics. And your lens go really far! You caught Mertesacker in detail :)

someone answer my question

emirates vs highbury

pros vs cons

I prefer HIghbury a lot. Well it has a lot of history for me and looked so nicer and unique and better atmosphere though smaller capcity

Highbury has alot more memories and happy ones at that. I used to go there with my dad when I was little etc so that will always have a special place in my heart.

Emirates loses some of that because of its name and because we haven't done very well since we have moved there. But hopefully when success comes happy memories will be made, it has the potential to be great.

I really liked Highbury too, even though I didn't have a chance to go there when it was a stadium, just walked in the gardens that used to be our sacred pitch :)

It's natural that the crowd would put more pressure and make it more hostile to our opponents, because the stands where much closer to the pitch. The same happens in many stadiums throughout Britain.
But the pressure sometimes could turn against our own players during times of poor football. Watch Fever Pitch and see Nick Hornby's account on Arsenal fans during the late 60's. Lots of people swearing and picking on particular players.

I think you have to acknowledge how the playing sides makes a huge impact on the ground atmosphere. The players have to win the crowd over, either with skills or heart. Things pick up on that.
No wonder Highbury's atmosphere from 2000 to 2004 was maybe unmatched in Arsenal's history. We had one of the finest teams in the world and we were kicking wholesale ass :D

There will be purist remembering the Clock End, North Bank, etc. But everything comes to an end in life. Stadiums received more fans when they could watch football standing on their feet, and people loved that too. But after Hillsborough it had to change. So old habits and traditions give way to necessity.

Moving to a larger arena was a necessity for Arsenal. From a logical/financial point of view, it almost doubles the club's match revenue. In the long term, it puts Arsenal in conditions to compete with Manchester United in terms of matchday income.

It's unfair to compare the atmosphere of both stadiums, because Arsenal made some sacrifices in the quality of the squad in order to cope with the expenses of the new stadium. There are faithful fans behind the team at all times, but others not so much. And with the ticket prices being charged now, I think some of the most die hard fans were excluded, and these guys were largely responsible for a fantastic atmosphere too.

In my opinion, it makes sense to prefer the Emirates, one of the most modern stadiums in Europe, but the club has to acknowledge the position they're in and think if it's really fair to charge premium prices during a time our squad does not justify it. This is a bit too much to be asking of fans IMO.

Right but highbury had more personality as a design.

Emirtates is a simple prototype plastic modern stadium.

Higbury had so much more character and individuality.

postal mail or email ?
camel or train?

Ridiculous to even compare don`t let cesc n nasri make us question the past. Placing blame to players vs atmosphere !!! ManCity have an endless pot of funds let them build a new stadium. Life is about moving forward progressing and sacrifices is part of life. We have sacrificed now, let move forward.:SMUG:

yes but they coudlve at least put some off the old ''higbury'' cahracter into the design.

I am aware an extra 20,000 seats is an adcantage but why not make the stadium have some arsenal higburghy type individuality about it.

Its a very standard prototype stadium.

you know what I mean. EMirates just looks like any number of modern design stadia.

Highbury looked like highbury....Arsenals stadium...not just any stadium.

take 100 other modern stadiums paint them red and you got the emirates.

Swap emirates with sky blue and city of manchester stadium red and you got arsenal in mAnchester and city in london

Not a very encouraging performance for the "new" Arsenal, but let's look at this match positively: Arsenal finally managed to have an "ugly" win...that is a big step forward for this team.

Gutted that Chamakh did not score with that header, still think he might become a very good CF for Arsenal...

Have u even been to the emirates?

how? im asking a simple question. his slagging off the emirates and if im not correct, even said how it diddnt have the big clock we had at highbury. if he has been their he wouldn't say that.

the stadium in time will build its own history and character.

Yes i do and its called street photography. check my whole flickr account here

Nice pics Jonney, I also love to do street photography when I'm around with the camera. I liked the photos from the emirates.

About Highbury, I have so fond memories of that stadium that is just unfair to compare it to the new one. Memories will fulfill the Emirates, but time is needed for that.

About the design being a "prototype" that happens with all the stadiums of all time. Highbury was similar to a lot of other stadiums of his period. For all the love I had for Highbury, Arsenal needed a new stadium, with modern facilities, more seats and the Emirates perfectly accomplish this. I think it's a great stadium for a great club. And I have to say that the TV cameras angles at the Emirates are far better for us TV spectators.

Emirates is a beauty of a stadium no doubt, unfortunately it lacks history and the fact the likes of your great players don't possess the great memories their like they do with Highbury which could be a factor mentally.
