Arsenal Thread

Clean sheets with Senderos and Eboué together! Those were the days

I think we can put it down to luck AND Lemon ;)

The young Costa Rican Joel Campbell apparently isn't going through. Apparently he just didn't turn up for a meeting? that's not very nice, apparently Man United have come in for him.

So it may be frustrating not hearing from Arsenal, but can you blame them, because whenever our interest in a player becomes public knowledge, then another team comes in for them

Oh well, hopefully he turns out to be shit :DD

I think the last thing United are about to do is get a striker. Must be crap imo.

I thought his father said they wanted to wait til after the U20 tournament?

I watched Campbell at the Copa America and was the only decent player of Costa Rica. He's fast and skillfull and a very promising player. But I doubt he's ready to play top elite football really. In my oppinion he still needs 2-3 years to get to his peak.

Wait he's a centre back? I could have sworn he was a striker. My bad :)

Im wrong he is a ST ....been watching way too much footy live n on tv. Im seeing newcastle at the wknd then off to see Milan vs Barca . Anyhow the only costarican worth is still wanchope

Off-topic drekkard, but did the Costa Rican player of Twente not play, because he is really very good. He won Twente the title virtually all by himself (i forgot his name...damn, oh yes Bryan Ruiz).

I didn't payed much attention to Costa Rica and they played poorly and deffensive football whenever I watched them. And I only remember this guy Campbell because the commentators stressed him all the time. He did some nice movements and showed he has the speed and power, but actually I couldn't say if he's a great player or not, he should show it in a competitive team.

And that's all I remember from Costa Rica unfortunately, so I don't know about Bryan Ruiz. But, I must say, I watched also 2 or 3 Twentee matches this season and can't remember him in them neither.

Age + selective memory do these things...

Nah he wasn't there, I think like Mexico they had to send an Olympic squad of under 23s with 3/4 older players. I think all their team was from players at domestic Costa Rican clubs. There are only 2 really big teams in Costa Rica, Deportivo Saprissa and La Liga de Alajuelas both are from the captial, San Jose, but la Liga are from a suburb near the airport. There is actually a better striker they had at the Copa America called Madrigal, who just signed for Cerro Portenyo (biggest team in Paraguay) but he doesnt have the hype machine of Joel Campbell's dad, he's also 2 years older than Campbell.

The proper Costa Rican squad has some more experienced players, as well as Ruiz there are a couple of defenders in the MLS, and the strikers Saborio (at Real Salt Lake City) and Urenya (at Krasnodar in Russia).

Apparently he only wants a move to Italy or Spain, and turned down any English offers.

wenger pissing me off! Putting a £10m bid for jagielka ?? is he aving a laugh! I`m more incline to think he put such a bid for fans to think he`s on the march ffs..... His movements are so slow Im calling Wenger "sloth" . Worst rumor I read was ribery i didnt know he still plays . I rather have Jageilka than Cahill , well for partnering with Vermaelen. Vermaelen + Jagielka = eratic nutters to cause strikers panic

Erm, few things:

1. Ribery still plays and is still ridiculously productive. 11 goals and 21 assists last season.

2. Jagielka is quality too, solid defender and an improvement on what you have.

3. Wtf is Wenger doing offering £2m LESS than this time last year for him? Is that a joke?

Jagielka would be awesome.
I'm not sure about Ribery, he is a class player with a questionable mentality. I don't think Arsenal can afford a player like him since mentality seems to be their problem.

He's playing that Barcelona game :D Wear and tear, he's 1 year older, and all that.

Ribery is a top money transfer, won't happen.

As for this Campbell kid, I couldn't care less. We're hardly missing out on a Ronaldo here...

Why waste valuable time trying to sign a nobody in Costa Rica? And get stood up
AW's reluctancy to acknowledge that we need proven players is irritating. Enough of young kids, we already have enough. I know I sound like a broken record saying this all over again but that's that.

I don't get this last bit, most of the rumours I have heard are that he is going for proven players? he put a bid on for Jagielka? he has been asking about Cahill etc, Ribery? Mata? Phil Jones? he signed Gervinho?

I am frustrated aswell, but saying Wenger isn't recognising that we need proven players is wrong imo.

We haven't got a clue how far negaotiations are with any players, so how can we make judgement? we can be frustrated that we haven't bought anybody yet but that's it. Wenger has always been rather quite before signing players, so just because we aren't hearing much doesn't mean he isn't going for people.

we need a defender and he is obviously looking into that, I would like to have players in now, but we can't always have what we want and as I have said a million times just because we want a player doesn't mean they then just miraculously appear signed and in our team. It takes a while to sign a player, unless you pay a ridiculous amount for them straight away and pay them stupid wages, then there isn't much to negotiate.

Also signing a nobody Costa Rican (and players like that) is how we have built alot of our successful teams, so it shouldn't be sniffed at either.

I am getting frustrated aswell, but jeez people need to chill out.

What I meant is that, Gervinho aside, the deal that was closest to getting done was this Campbell one. This is in itself a statement that Wenger is not concentrating on proven players. We're reaching the middle of the transfer window.
Plus, for all we know, he could be Vela Mk II with racing stripes.

Even Gervinho is an unknown quantity. Is he really proven? Just because he had a good season in France? So did Chamakh.

Jagielka won't come for £10M, that's why it was laughed at in here. Cahill costs almost a Nasri... We all know Wenger won't break the club's transfer record on a CB. In fact, I think he won't break the record this summer.

Im trying to be positive here ,but my walls r cracking ....stop the sloth movement make the dealssss .I support ed this club too long . How did gerd support ed mutd n went on to support ed spuds lol

anyone can be anyone mark 2, but if you thought like that you would never buy a young player again. It's a gamble like most things in football.

Well Gervinho has won the league and cup in france and was one of their best players, So he is a proven winner? he is not proven in the premierleague or Champs league, but as we have seen, players in that bracket cost an arm and a leg (and want to go to other teams)

Chamakh still has alot to prove but he had a great start to the season in his first season that can't be overlooked. Now he is used to the Premiership and if he gets in a good preseason, he could start showing us what he is made of.

Was that Wengers final bid on Jagielka? everyone is acting like Wenger gave them a take it or leave it offer of 10mill? from what I read that was an offer that was given that is all, it could be a starting offer that they are working on and negotiating?

Peaple are getting frustrated and kicking off and working themselves up over small bits of information, which is not healthy.

Is Cahill worth 20million? is he a proven player? if Gervinho isn't proven then Cahill certainly isn't, he has proved he is a decent CB but that is it. None of the defenders available, especially English are world class, but people are getting desperate and want Wenger just to buy a defender no matter the cost.

He is taking his time because he doesn't want to pay ridiculous money for somebody decent and only that. He is not panic buying because fans are screaming at him to buy and I respect that from him.

At the moment I know he is looking into getting a defender and that is good enough for me at the moment, hopefully we can get someone soon so they get a few pre season games in.

Anyway I understand everybodies frustration, but I think people's judgement are getting clouded quite a bit.

Completely agree on Cahill, he's not proven nor worth 20M. I said he costs almost 20M. English players are ridiculously overpriced, look at what Liverpool paid for Downing.

We're not getting frustrated over small bits of information. It's more about the lack of information. I understand Arsenal works under the radar, but it's inevitable when a big club goes for a player, word spreads. We got rumours about Gervinho, didn't we, and they were true.

However, the information that does get out isn't encouraging. The bid for Jagielka, for example, was a total waste of time, as time is running out. Why make a starting offer lower than a previous unsuccessful one?
The truth is Jagielka, Cahill and even Samba all would cost more than Gervinho and that's just wrong. I don't see Wenger spending that amount on a CB.

I don't even know why people get so worked up over a CB signing anyway. We've got 4 of them in the squad. Vermaelen and Kos as starters. Unless AW really wants Vermaelen as LB. Otherwise, the real problem is how we're not looking for a new LB, as we're bound to start the season with Gibbs and Traore there.
Plus, didn't we need a goalkeeper and a back up for Song? We're not seeing those things happening.

I say welcome Gervinho, great signing and all, but we have Arshavinho and Theodinho Walcott already in the squad, so that was hardly our priority.

We run the risk of having an even more unbalanced team this season.
I won't even mention the Cesc and Nasri situation here... I can't help being worried with the current state of affairs.

Bobby, you're the most positive fan here, so I'm hoping you're an insider who knows everything will be alright in the end :D

I have my sources ;))......I wish!

Yeah I agree with what you are saying, but there are about 100 rumours to every true runour out there, so you never know what is true and what isn't.

I think I would like Vermaelen and Djouru at the back together. Left back is a problem, especially with Gibbs being injured all of the time.

The goalkeeper I am happy with Scez, until he fucks up :DD but yeah it would be nice to have a more experienced keeper, but if Scez can do the do, then we will be alright. But it is a risk with such a young keeper.

The back up to Song I would really like and our squad needs, although Frimpong could cover for a bit, he looks very promising. But again it's all on the unkowns.

Gervinho is a good signing in the fact that it will make Arshavin and Walcott wake up and with the 3 of them vying for those spots, then hopefully it will bring out the best in them. Imagine Arshavin and Walcott playing at their bests with Van P up front for a whole season, that would be amazing. But again, all hope and no substance because one of those will be injured for a while.

I think there is part of me that wants to see this team do well and prove Wenger right, so that is why I am not going too mental. I knwo if Wenger isn't active in this transfer period and we do shit (by our standards) next season, Wenger will be off.

I also do think though that our defense isn't that bad and if we are actually taught to defend as a team, we will make up for our failings. Especially how to defend set pieces. With Clichy gone, we now have nobody playing the other team onside all of the time, that will make a big difference ;))

I always think that our team is lacking a winning mentality and also need a defensive masterclass. I don't necessarily think bringing in new players is the big answer, but bringing in new players breathes fresh air into the team and makes competition in the squad which I think is vital for us. so as said above Gervinho will give our forward players a kick up the arse, we need this in defence aswell to some extent, but just buying an overpriced decent English player isn't necessarilly the answer. alot of fans think it is, because they aer desperate to see new faces.

Anyway i think we are all on the same page, but I am just a bit more laid back :))

Yeah we are, and I agree completely on the defense bit. Our CB pairings aren't so bad. We need to improve defensively overall. What the team lacks is more solidarity - midfielders tracking back and busting guts to help defense - and attention in open play, and on top of that, the setpieces of course!

I think, of all those CBs, Jagielka is the best, but would be too expensive.

Wenger talks about finding the right players, but he needs some less than special pieces to cover defensive roles too. The squad is very thin in some areas still. If Song gets injured, we're screwed. Frimpong looked promising (I saw him live last year) but he spent one whole season injured, like Vermaelen.

As for Sczez, I like the lad too, his abilities and attitude - I really like how he's mental :D
But he's still 19 and we don't know if he can do it season in season out. We're taking it for granted already. But what if he pulled some Fabianskies?

Wenger is walking on thin fucking ice this time if he doesn't do the necessary moves in the market and the team doesn't do well. But please don't see me as being too much of a pessimist. I want him to shut his critics as much as you do :)
