From Arsenal.com - we should have some news tomorrow/friday

Exclusive: Wenger - I’m going to buy a keeper by Friday

Arsène Wenger intends to sign a goalkeeper before the weekend.

The departures of Stuart Taylor to Aston Villa and Graham Stack on loan over the summer has left the Frenchman with only Jens Lehmann and Manuel Almunia as his recognised keepers.

On Sunday Wenger admitted that Uruguayan international Sebastian Viera was among his options. Speaking exclusively to Arsenal.com this afternoon, the Frenchman did not name names but he did reveal the deal would be concluded quickly and the new keeper would challenge the present incumbents for their spots in the first team squad.

“Certainly I will bring in another goalkeeper,” said Wenger. “That should be decided tomorrow or Friday.

“You don’t take a goalkeeper to sit on the bench, you take them to challenge everybody. That is what we intend to do. It is fair competition.

“At the moment Lehmann is No 1 in my opinion but we live in a competitive world and everybody accepts that you are only as good as your last game. You always have to prove yourself again.”

Any Arse-nal fans slightly worried about the first post-Viera season?

Definately worried. Its the least confident Ive been going into the new season.

Wenger is starting to piss me off a lil. Hes got money to spend, yet he's keeping it all tucked away, he's got the money to go for a quality centre-mid. i dont want us to buy any more young players, we've alreay got loads of promising players. we need players that can play now.

Looks like the Jenas thing could have gained a little more substance.

He didn't play in the week and apparently has handed in a transfer request which Newcastle are refusing to deny. It is reported they'll accept about £10 million for him with Arsenal and Spurs interested but come on why leave a mid table team to join another mid table team.

Jenas has only got work rate, he does nothing extraordinary. Fabregas is much better.

Fabregas doesnt do anything extraordinary, him and Jenas are similar, very tidy players, keep things simple and have an eye for a good pass.

Like Fab I rate Jenas....

Fabregas is still very young though, so why spend 10 million on Jenas?

We need a central back and a central midfielder imo and 25 million is enough to buy 2 excellent players for those positions.

Why dont you look on the bright side? Maybe you dont need Vieira. Maybe someone already at Arsenal always had what it takes to play his role but was never given the opportunity or the responsibility.
Just when you think you're a player short, someone usually steps up.

Wenger weighs up transfer options

By Richard Clarke

Arsène Wenger has made only major signing this summer but he may be about to add to his squad.

The manager has yet to make a decision on triallists Philippe Christanval and Alexander Song. Meanwhile the acquisition of goalkeeper Sebastian Viera could be close at hand.

“He may join us,” said Wenger when asked about the Uruguayan No 1. “That will be decided soon if the medical and financial reasons can be sorted out.”

When asked about the French international defender and the Cameroon midfielder, the manager added: “Christanval is a central back and we already have four. As for Song, at the moment I have not made a decision.”

Belarussian midfielder Alexander Hleb remains Wenger’s solitary purchase of the close season.

"How did we lose that one?"

The pocession was the most impressive thing, the ability to change it into goals was disappointing.

A good warm-up yesterday, no complaints, the best team won on the day. I was happy with Arsenal's performance, I felt the boys could easily have won were it not for some Cech heroics and outstanding defence all round from Chel$. Fabregas looks tasty, as does Hleb, and Titi and RVP looked sharp already.

I think Arsenal coped admirably without Vieria, but perhaps not so well without Sol. Cesc and Flamini ran the midfield, but the defence appeared a little rusty. Senderos is only 20 so naturally he's gonna make mistakes, but other than a few suspect passes I though he looked solid, just perhaps not quite the finished Campbell replacement that many are touting him as, yet.
