Essien's attitude is strange, a week ago he said he was staying at lyon, but he didn't want to go to the peace cup in korea.
Now he wants to leave Lyon for Chelsea, but Aulas doesn't want him to go.

So it's not going to be easy.

Also, i don't want to offense anyone, but italian press has always been saying a lot of crap, so i'm waiting for real sources.

Paddy is past his best IMO. He was poor for the majority of last season looking the shadow of the player he was. If Juve want to pay big bucks then we should let him go (I looks like he wants to go as well). Wenger isn't daft, he will have something up his sleeve in case it happens. Essien would be nice, Wenger's link with Houllier may well do us a favour in this situation.

Pires leaving would be a blow, the guy is class. Consistently gets goals. Finding a replacement for him would be hard although maybe we already have it.

By moving Freddie over to the left (remember to damage he did there in 2002 in the title run in when Bobby was injured?) and playing Hleb down the right in the Pires playmaker role then maybe we will be ok.

I would love to see us get Essien, just for the pure comedy value!

Still you never know, Arsene and Houllier are mates so maybe a negotiation would take place rather than the C*UNTS from west london making some noise, unsettling the player and then trying to throw their money around.

That really would be a touch of genius! :) Heard a stumbling block on Sky about Vieria as he has not asked for a transfer ect Arsenal will have to pay the remainder of his contract up which is supposed to around 6m! take into account that you will get 12-15m and is it really worth it? Some serious negotiations to take place, i cant see it going through today!

hmmm its all interesting if Arsenal are gonna cash in I find it rather odd, Viera is the heart of the midfield, the youngsters did well around him last season but on thier own they cant match his power and strength, yeah maybe he had a bad season but that dont mean you kick him out, im sure the same has happend to other great players, and after so long we finally got Gilberto and Paddy together, the only way I can see Arsenal letting him go is if for 100% Wenger has got a replacement already lined up, either a Essien or maybe someone else, not Baptista though he is proven striker now.

Now that I think about it. Essien would probably be THE GREATEST replacement for Vieira.
He has all of Vieira's abilities except his height.

I think Arsenal need Essien more than Man Utd and Chelsea if Vieira goes cuz he's perfect for you.

I totally agree with this, Essien would be a great buy but their are rumours that Diarra will be Paddy's replacement if he goes.

Hopefully when I get back from my honeymoon it will be all sorted out once and for all and we can look forward to regaining the title back from the Chavs!!

Go Gunners!!

I'm NOT trying to get your hopes up but did you know that Arsenal were linked with Essien way back in January before Man Utd and Chelsea ever thought about buying him?
Maybe a secret deal is in the works...

I personally think that its best if he stays at Lyon for one more season just so the rest of the other clubs can see if this player is as good as they say cuz who knows, he might play really bad next season for Lyon.

That's what should have happened with Drogba, but if Chelsea want to continue to splash the cash on one season wonders it's up to them.

Essien's always been a good player, if Lyon have made so many progresses in the Champion's league it's mostly because of him. And he's taken a great part in winning the championship 3 times in a row. French people know that he is a very good player.
Wenger's been looking forward to buying him since a long time, even last season some newspapers were talking about it. Let's hope we get him if Vieira leaves, but he has still a lot to do with Lyon, and I think they can go really far.

Major typo. I'm NOT trying to get your hopes up.
I dont think the move is likely though.

Arsenal have confirmed that they have accepted Juventus' £13.75m offer for their skipper Patrick Vieira.

The French international midfielder is now discussing personal terms with the Italian side.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger told their website: "I share the sadness with our supporters that Patrick has left us.

"But on the other hand I would say to them trust us and support us. The sad thing is he leaves us, but the good thing is that he leaves us on a high."

He added: "Patrick was a great player for us, one of the greatest in the club's history and I feel I had a special relationship with him because I made him come here.

"I think his impact, not only at Arsenal but in English football overall, was just tremendous."

Vieira, who was Wenger's first signing in 1996, has flown to Turin and will undergo a medical on Friday.

He said: "When you spend nine years at the club, like I did, it is a difficult decision to leave.

"But in the end you have to make a choice for your future. It was a very difficult decision, but I am happy with it.

"I made the decision to leave because I felt it was time for me to have a new challenge. But that does not mean I was unhappy or that I was having a problem at Arsenal.

"It was just that I had the feeling I needed to grow and meet a new challenge, and I feel Juventus was the best challenge for me.

"I'd like to thank the Arsenal fans. They have been fabulous.

"Even recently in the street they were saying 'if you are going, then thanks for the last nine years'. That is really touching and it makes me feel that I gave my best for the club.

"I can go with my head held high. I did my best every day in training and in every match, and I left shaking the hand of Arsene Wenger and Mr (David) Dein. That was really important to me."

Sad to see him go, Patrick has been immense for us and always will be an Arsenal Legend, good luck to him.It will interesting to see who Wenger brings in if anyone to replace him,but hes done it before and hell do it again and all i can say is IN WENGER WE TRUST.

First thing u lot has gotta do is find a new captain.Cesc Fabregas has to step up his game somehow, such burden on young shoulders.

Goodbye Paddy! from Roy Keane.

My deepest condolences for the departure of The Captain. I know how you feel, until just before he left. But life goes on, Davids I think would be a very good replacement :-)

I kinda miss him. I just wanna see him fall over and cry for a freekick just one more time.
Keano is just gonna have to find someone else to pick a fight with. :(

Davids is still a good player and hes a free agent i believe so we would just have to worry about his wages.I do think Wenger has got something else up his sleave though, there was a player at Nantes who Lyon were gonna buy to replace Essian if he left so maybe hes got his eye on him.Would be great if we got Essien from Under Cheskis noises!

Good price for a 29 year old imo. Good business by Arsenal. You have better players than him now.

13.75 million for someone whos 29 and considerd the best in their position is cheap in my book even in todays market.Plus i havent read any where that Viera made a transfer request so that would mean paying up the rest of his contract.Makes we wonder why we didnt just sell him last season to madrid when he put the request in and we could of got 20 million for him.

Hadn't Vieira once stated that he'll never consider playing professional football in Italy again because of all the racism?

More than anything, you gooners must be relieved that you won't face anymore "will he? or won't he?" summer sessions. Its kinda funny that this time round he hasn't requested to leave!

If you Wenger buys well, this may turn out to be a very good move for Arsenal....

I agree. Considering what Vieira means to Arsenal and how great a player he is, £14million is way too cheap.

You guys got ripped off.

Lads, check this story from football365 out.It kinda underlines exactly why Paddy is SOLD to Juve.

So What Does Arsene Know?

I disagree...it just outlines more open ended questions and confuses the saga even more. Personally, I think its very un-Wenger to jeopardise the short term future of Arsenal to "get his own back" on a player who cried out Wolf a bit too often....
If he had someone in mind, he should have brought the young 'un and kept Vieira for at least one more year as his progressive mentor. As explained in the article, clubs will now exploit Arsenal's desperation.

Paddy's off to Italy, Pires wants out and Campbell's been linked with a swap deal for Jermaine Jenas. It's all like some horrible nightmare!!! Especially Jenas!!! NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Nah seriously, I for one have implicit trust in the manager's decision. Every man and his dog has an opinion on Vieria's sale, but the bottom line is that no one on the face of the earth knows his mental and physical state better than AW. I still rate him as amongst the world's elite players, with the rare ability to take the game by the scruff of the neck and dominate proceedings. This is largely attributable to his style of play, ie throw yourself into every challenge and push people out of the way until you win the ball, occasionally getting sent off in the process. Naturally, this makes him fairly injury prone, increasingly so as the years have gone by.

Think about it, how many times have you seen an Arsenal game where Vieria has NOT at some point been a crumpled heap on the turf, mouth agape, clutching his shin/knee/face, when you usually get that empty-stomach feeling and say to yourself,
"Oh shit. Pleeeeease not Vieria"
9 times out of 10 he shakes it off and carries on, but when you are approaching 30 all those knocks begin to take their toll. He was not at his best last season, and Wenger clearly feels we've had his best days. Arsenal have to realise he was never going to be around forever. Yes he was worth £23m last year, but he'll be worth even less next year, so £13m to me is a good deal.

I don't want one average season and the annual flirtations with Real Madrid to tarnish an otherwise legendary Arsenal career. He gave us his best 9 years, proved himself the best in his position at his peak and while not perhaps a great captain, he was at least a good one. In true Arsenal style, we still made a £10m profit on him even after 9 years and notably, he left with his last kick securing us the FA cup.

He who laughs last, laughs hardest Roy. HAH FUCKING HAH.

1996 - 2005

He leaves with his head held high and no ill-feeling from most Arsenal fans at least. Best of luck to you Paddy, thanks for the memories.

As for a replacement, "Arsene knows", and he just does. Diarra for me, Essien without the £20m price tag and hype.

Despite Vieira getting sold to the Biaconeri, I doubt its anything too serious. If Vieira was that INSTRUMENTAL and VITAL to the arsenal team Wenger would have kept him!! Davids would be a good addition and the fact that Inter are willing to sell him at around £1-3 million makes the deal even sweeter! I hope a guy like Ajax's Wesley Sneijder or Deportivo's Valeron gets signed...both have great crossing, shooting and passing ability!!! Ballack would be a nice signing too for about £8-10 million
