A combination of curiosity and boredom of my soul-less, increasingly repetitive FIFA 09 MM game led me to finally downloading and trying out the World Cup demo, which I hadn't bothered to do until now. After reading these comments it makes the game sound like it's going to good for a few weeks and then just horribly repetitive which is a shame as i was tempted to buy this game if only to play on manual.
I mean that in reference to the AI, the main downfall of the FIFA series. Basically all the problems in Fifa 10 stemmed from an AI issue and it seems a similar trend has emerged here. People talking already about how the poor teams still pass the like the best teams, how the game decides that you aren't allowed to win the ball during certain periods, how your team mates are absolute mongs who don't make intelligent runs or position themselves well.
AI works both for the other 10 players you aren't controlling and the team you're playing against. Jeez i hope EA spend 90% of their time on AI for Fifa 11.
First of all, I love the 3D globe in the menu. I like the colourful front-end compared to the dull, monochrome, sluggish minimalism of other FIFA titles. I love the new pitch, the better lighting (compared to 09) and the confetti. I even don't mind the manager/fans cut scenes, especially since you have the option to turn them off. I like the post-game stats.
In control of the ball, it's quite nice. With Manual controls, aside from the occasional player-selection error, it feels nice to pass the ball across the back, slide the ball into Xavi's feet, turn, have a look, use slow-dribble to turn again, then spread it wide to Ramos. I noticed lots of little new animations here and there that give the players a touch more realism.
But the game is still fundamentally broken. (Note: Don't get me wrong, I wasn't expecting any different before I tried the demo).
Here I am controlling Pique, jockeying Gilardino (in possession of the ball). Off the ball, Iaquinta makes a diagonal run. Puyol tracks the run with his back to play, which is daft to start with. Perhaps his curly locks got in his eyes.
Iaquinta's run continues. Even though the two Spanish fullbacks have tucked narrow and hold a line on the edge of the penalty area, both Puyol and Iniesta (top) track their runners ridiculously deep.
Meanwhile, Gilardino feints to go right, I (Pique) bite, and Gilardino cuts left to create a yard of separation. A nice little move and good use of slow-dribble.
He then slides a simple pass into Iaquinta's feet, who receives it deep in the penalty area. Puyol, his AI marker, is at least five/six yards away, skidding clumsily to a halt and facing the wrong way.
Brilliant. He turns, one-nil. Genius defending.
Never mind £40 or whatever, I would not buy World Cup 2010 if it cost £1. If they don't fix this game-breaking fail, I won't be buying FIFA 11 either. I already have one worthless drinks-coaster in FIFA 10.
And it doesn't just spoil things defensively. When I'm trying to build play patiently, like Spain would, it's totally ruined by the persistently available option to just chuck the ball casually at the feet of Torres/Villa whenever I want. They come short, their markers back miles off, and playing that forward pass is child's play. That's why there's no midfield play in this game - it's pointless! Just press forwards and pass.
Imagine if you had to build up play intelligently, biding your time to try and work the ball to your danger-men. Attempting to cleverly draw organised opponents out of shape before you time the incisive ball just right. Or unlocking them with a piece of unexpected skill, or a slick combination.
That's international football. This is not. Just press Forward + Pass.
