Retri's right (hello sweetheart) that complex controls do not equal better gameplay. When you look at FIFA, it uses how many different combinations of buttons for dribbling? L2 for close control, L2+ Right Stick just to do the simplest of feints let alone the really fancy stuff, L2+R2 for skilled dribbling (which is useful when you realise how to use it), R2 for sprinting, Right Stick for knock-ons? R2 and no directions to shield the ball, L1 to turn and face goal...
It gives you more control, sure, but, for all those control options, it's a bloody nightmare trying to beat players just using left stick dribbling.
While I don't think the dad pad is the future for everyone to use to control the game, I don't think minimising the number of buttons is the problem - it's the gameplay itself.
