Ultimate Fighting Championship (Xbox 360, PS3)

Yeah I agree about the movesets, nearly everyone feels the same because they all have the same animation for kicks and punches.

i had my first real session on this last night after being away this weekend.

i am enjoying the game, i've played a few exhibition fights with different fighters and thats pretty good!

i've started the career and i'm finding it tough on expert. i'm fighting in the middleweight division and i'm 6'2" (modelled on myself). i'm using boxing and wrestling as my styles, mainly due to head kicks being countered so much on expert and the sweet ducking hooks, also i like the wrestling moves on the ground.

i started well, i was 4-0 and KO'd every opponent, but they were rubbish. i then suffered my first loss to some guy who abosolutly battered me from the muay thai clinch in the first round, he was silly quick, i didn't stand a chance.

so now i was 4-1, went into the next fight and wiped the floor with some unknown, finished with a lovely ducking right hook that was timed beautifully.

5-1, i was doing well, or so i thought, the next 2 fights were a disaster. the first of which i got robbed, i battered this guy from the start and swiftly removed about 3/4 of his health in the first round from a mixture of stand up and ground and pound. the second round started in the same way, but about half way through i went for a ducking right hook and as i came up for the punch a huge right hook from my opponent KO'd me. i wasn't gassed, so i was surprised, but thats the way it goes sometimes. now 5-2, i get the chance to fight chris leben and he was far superior to any other fighter i'd fought. i made a good go of it, but eventually came unstuck again in the clinch, he was unleashing quick punching combo's and then finished me with some dirty boxing uppercuts.

so now i'm 5-3, which isn't that good and i'm in tatters, i decide to go for a lower ranked fighter to bolster my stats and beat him on points and then the next fight i go for the fighter ranked just above me and beat him with some ground and pound in the third round.

so now 7-3, i get the chance of a rematch with chris leben and it's too tempting to turn down. i've trained quite a bit, upped my clinch defence stats from sparring and done a couple of boot camps, so i'm feeling confident. we'll see how the fight goes tonight.

a couple of gripes i have about the game: -

the e-mails, it's a little annoying getting updates on events constantly, but it's not a big issue.

when starting your career it's difficult to KO someone even if they have no stamina left, due to your strength and stiking stats not being very high, but this soon gets better as your stats build up.

a couple of questions to the evo-web community: -

what do you find is the best way to get out of a striking clinch (muay thai, dirty boxing, etc)?

what difficulty setting are people going through the career on and how are people finding the difficulty?

I didn't even know how to catch punches and kicks till you said earlier Tim thanks for the tip :)

i might go through bits of the tutorial again for counters and what not

Oh can people not post results about last nights event in here, thanks :)
yeah, how do you catch punches and kicks again?

it was a couple of my tasks last night in a boot camp and i forgot how to do it. i should have gone back to the tutorial, but i couldn't be arsed.

I think someone said you click in the right stick or something?

No idea mate, I'm sure Coopz or someone will be able to tell you properly soon enough though :)

i know i've already said this, but i'm doing my career on expert and submissions are almost impossible!

is it worth dropping down to advanced? and can i actually drop down to advanced?

could very well be!

can anyone confirm this?

i know tim and coopz def know

Up on the RS for High Punches and Headkicks, Down for Body shots ect

"Apparently" a patch is out on the 16th May to solve the quitting issues and more

Cool. Where did you hear this?

People have rang THQ and its what they have been told, like i say apparently

how are everyones careers going anyways?

I think i only lost 1 or 2 fights and was at year 7 when i last played it

I'm not a fan of single player in most games anyway so i doubt ill be playing it again

I think I will wait for a patch to resolve the disconnections and lag issues before I buy it. Plus it will hopefully be cheaper by then.

OMG Just had the most incredible fight ever! This guy was dominating me in all 3 rounds, he was really good on the ground and I couldn't shake him off. However I hung in there and escaped a few subs that he tried. But my stamina was drained from trying to transition out of his mount a lot of the time.

I had just resigned myself to the fact that he was going to win on points, and in the last 10 seconds I just went for it, punching him, and caught him with a magnificent left hook just as he dropped his hands from his face and it knocked him out, 4 minutes 59 seconds of the last round! Incredible stuff!

How do you guys get out of submission? Press buttons or roll the stick? This Joe Lauzen or whatever in career mode just do submissions early and win on it every time and I don't even have low stamina... annoying.

Depends what type of fighter you have really. Boxers I sometimes press buttons, and other styles I roll the stick.

Right, when my opponent is on top of me, how the fuck do I get him off?

Depends what difficulty you are on. On the lower difficulties you firstly need to grab his head and hold on to it, if he breaks that guard, block his punches and wait for your opportunity to grab his head again. I find :l1: and minor transition grabs the head easily. If he attempts to transition you hold back on the right analogue stick. Then once you're ready you can just roll out by using a minor transition move. You could try a major transition but it's risky as it's easier to reverse. Minor transitions are more effective and less predictable. If you're in the north/south, I find that major transitions are easier to pull off, but on the whole stick with minor ones. On the higher difficulties you really have to wait till the opponent is more worn out than you. I find it's better after he has attempted a flurry of punches or wears himself out trying to move a number of times. Just be patient, block his punches and bide your time, then grab his head and minor transition out of it. All in all, random transition spamming will get you nowhere, so pick your moments otherwise he'll reverse you.

Obviously your attributes have a key role to play and in my experience it's easier if you're BJJ/Judo than Wrestling. For example, my CAF in career mode (Boxing/Wrestling) would not roll out of transitions at all. However, his strength was a huge factor in getting out of mounts. For example, my CAF has 89 strength and I could sometimes force my way out of a half mount, and just stand up with full stamina. However, mostly I had to block, grab the head and wait it out till the ref stood us up.

Hope this helps.

Yeah it does help thanks mate. I play online by the way, not against AI. I will go back to tutorials and practice minor transitions as it is vital to be able to manouvre effectively on the ground.

Sure, but if you learn how to defend the ground on expert you'll be unbeatable online. It is solid, especially when the AI goes all superhuman on you and reverses every one of your moves even when they are gassed out ;))

Same here, if it doesn't arrive from my rental places first.
