is it only gonna be PES 6 or there's also gonna be PES 4 & PES 5 ?

Hi,

We often discuss here the "golden era" of PES : the PS2 ones.

I'm just curious on PS1 which one do you prefer ? Personally it's ISS Pro 98 European version.

European differs from the USA version - the US version is more similar to WE3 WC98 and the EU closer to WE3 Final in terms of gameplay.

It's less elaborated than ISS Pro Evolution 2 and Pro Evolution Soccer 2 but the fact these games have overpowered mechanisms (one-two). In ISS Pro Evo 1 the through balls are even stronger than in ISS Pro 98 (where they were already quite powerful) imho. It got fixed as of ISS Pro Evo 2 though.
Pro Evolution Soccer 2. Queen intro and after becoming champions. The best AI. Being able to play as club teams outside of Master League makes a big difference too. Although the club names are Konami’d, and badly too!

There is something aesthetically pleasing in PES 3 graphics

There really is. It's actually one of my favourite looking video games in general. The standout part is the lighting. It’s amazing. I'd recommend to anyone that plays setting up a CPU VS CPU match in the rain at somewhere like the Olimpico and watch it for a bit. The subtle fog effect on the rain weather looks quite similar to old football highlights on TV. There's also smaller but impressive details for the time like the adboards reflecting on the ground to simulate puddle reflections. It also has the best looking crowd on any PES from that era.

Plus, it’s a damn good game!

I tried the WE9LE ps2 version for the first time this week. Before, i always played the pc version.

I know some people say it's placebo, but i really think that the ps2 game version is more difficult (pcsx2 or on original hardware, doesn't matter). The CPU attacking prowess is much better than on PC. It's really weird that the PC versions seem always easier.

I finally got my Legion Go S emulation going again after it stopped working for (in my view) no reason, played a couple of original ISS Pro matches and it is so amazing how well this game holds up, it has the odd bit which takes time to get used to again, rigid passing, the most effective tackling just being running into the opponent, the automatic 1-2 pass, but apart from more modern versions of PES and maybe a couple of Fifa games, I can't think of a single pick up and play football game that has felt better than this does, for the last what, 30 years??? Doesn't hurt that my man Fouler got a winner as well :APPLAUD:And one of the first things I noticed was the headed clearances, they are so contextual and realistic, the ball just travels as far as the defender can get it, no magic power pistons hidden in the player's forheads, like in recent Fifa games.

Looking forward to getting some PS2 emulation going, maybe trying out those Winning Eleven games that I never had a chance to back in the day.

i think that too when it comes to the idea that PS2 games are more hard than PC versions, might be a placebo but i always would rather want to use the pcsx2 version rather than PC.

WE9LEK for PS2 was released on february 2006, while PC version only some months later ... so It could plausible also that konami re-touched something from a version to another, in the same way as it used to do when it released a version of the same game in a different market months later...

Recently, I haven't played either version enough to be able to say whether it really is as you say, but if it is, it could be because of what I said about the different release dates for the two platforms,

while, instead, latest days I have been testing the gameplay of WE-PES2007 (for PC and for PS2) and I can say that the PC version released as latest version and the gameplay of the PS2 version released months earlier has differences that can be "felt" and noticed, confirming what I wrote before about Konami's habit of retouching game-plays "a little bit" if the game was released with different dates a few months apart; in this case about WE-PES2007 gameplay, my firsts impressions could be said I can prefere the PC version, but it can be subjective; both platform versions are a retouch of PES 6 gameplay, as is WE10LE... as is pes6 was has a retouched gameplay of WE10 japan in the same way WE10 Aoki Samurai or also JLWE10 were

I repeat: it is known that Konami tweaked and optimized the gameplay even in the same game family if released in other markets weeks or months later, even if the optimizations, in today time, are not always liked by fans who can replay to all games at the same time; while at the time the games was released you played a single title for months and then when you heard the news about new gameplay, you played that one only if you gave yourself time to get used to it and often you appreciate latest one than previous, but they were other times, without all this abundance of today, and about the gameplay you had you learned appreciate it in the deep of all its faces, being however "forced" to play it for at least a year certainly without feeling the need to change the gameplay.... of course when the new title arrived, then after a year you could appreciate a breath of fresh air but in any case everything remained subjective as now

@Energia , imho, you're correct. I've noticed the same with WE 2008 over PES 2008, even though WE has been released only a few weeks later.
JL2008 is different too but it was release few months later (almost a year).

It's exactly like you said also for titles you mentioned. But Konami's habit of retouching the gameplay inside same family game, does not only concern all PES/WE games from PS2 era ; but also for all Konami games up to PES 2021 and the current eFootball, from PS3 era up to the present day... In the subsequence generations, with updates via the Internet and DLC even for the same titles, they always updated also gameplay... For example, for PES2021 were released 7 DLCs and gameplay of PES 2021 releaed with patch v.1.01 and DLC 1.0 than latest v1.07.02 patch released with DLC 7.0 are very different, passing though smal intermediate updates (1.02, 1.03. 1.04 , 1.05 1.06 etc etc...) for differences gameplays... Same was for all previous titles and also for present efootball era, but as I have already written it's a well known thing among fans of the series...nothing of new ;)

Yesterday evening, I played few Copa Sudamericana games on PES 2015 (PS3).

What a game it is ! Definitely my favourite so far on PS3, 2009 coming second.

2015 has so much content too, even without any datapacks.

I am weirdly addicted to playing PS1 ISS. The feeling is so different to modern games - naturally, this is an old ass game. I think I might even play through an entire league (of national teams) before I check out ISS 2. I'm still struggling with getting the PS2 emulation to work but it has made me stick with Iss and I kind of love that. Even with the old quirks and rigidness of the game, and me not still having figured out how to head in a cross or a corner (they always seem to just narrowly miss my attackers), it feels organic in a way that much more random stuff is happening than in modern games. And the feeling when scoring a goal is still amazing!

When I finally get the PS2 emulation up and running I will be checking out Pro Evolution Soccer - the original - first. The only game in the series, apart from Asian versions, that I never played. I did play the PS1 version, which, weirdly enough, I won through sending some letter to PSM or some other UK games mag. It just showed up the mail one day, took me a bit to figure out what happened!

We are inaugurating the 20th anniversary of PES 6 with an anniversary tournament, but following this, our schedule will shift to tournaments featuring:

WE9LE
WE2002
PES3
WE6FE
ISS98
Are you planning to play on actual PS2 hardware? Even though I play using an HDD, I experience stuttering inside the penalty area during free kicks and corner kicks in NTSC games like WE8LE and WE9LE. Have you noticed this, or do you have a solution for it?

I'm currently playing Winning Eleven J.League 2009 on Super Star difficulty.

The challenge is absolutely insane and, at the same time, fascinating. Many of the little tricks and exploits that worked in PES 6 simply don't work here. The CPU defends extremely well, closes down space intelligently, and seems to have an impressive understanding of the game.
I played three friendly matches against Napoli and lost all three: first with Júbilo Iwata, then Cerezo Osaka, and finally Boca Juniors.

There are matches that feel almost impossible to win because a combination of factors makes everything extremely difficult. The CPU wins most of the physical challenges, their players seem stronger in contact, and sometimes they simply destroy your players in challenges without even committing a foul.

So, I decided to play one last match that night as a kind of experiment.
I made Napoli the home team and chose Atlético Madrid.

I thought: let's see what happens.
And then look at how the scoreline turned out, even though I was still playing on Super Star difficulty.

A1.png

The most interesting part was that, suddenly, my players started winning practically every single challenge. The CPU looked as if it had completely forgotten how to play. At certain moments, I honestly had the impression that it had taken pity on me and decided to let me win. Hahaha

And this is exactly what I want to talk about.

Yes, obviously there are predefined difficulty levels. However, I have the impression that there is something much more sophisticated happening underneath them. The CPU's behavior seems to change throughout the match, creating a kind of internal dynamic of advantages and disadvantages. It almost feels like there is a living mechanism influencing certain aspects of the game.

I've already read and written hundreds of articles and discussions about handicap, momentum, and similar concepts. I'm not claiming that I have discovered exactly what is happening behind the scenes, nor am I presenting this as criticism of Konami. Quite the opposite.

To me, there is something almost magical about it.

It is a genuine piece of programming artistry, especially considering that we are talking about a game from an older generation. It almost sounds crazy to imagine that a game from that era could produce situations that feel so different and, above all, so unpredictable.

And perhaps that unpredictability is precisely what makes these matches so addictive and exciting.

You can walk onto the pitch believing that you have a certain advantage and, ten minutes later, the entire match has completely changed. On another occasion, you may be getting completely dominated by the CPU and then, seemingly out of nowhere, start finding space, winning challenges and creating opportunities that previously seemed impossible.

That feeling that you never really know what the game is going to throw at you is, for me, what gives this game such a unique personality.
I even started a Master League campaign in J2 with Tochigi SC and managed to end up almost at the bottom of the table. Hahaha

I didn't save that campaign because it was only an experiment. So, for now, I've been playing friendlies, trying to understand the CPU's behavior better and, of course, improve my own skills before starting another Master League campaign.

And that's exactly what makes it so much fun: even after all these years of playing Winning Eleven and PES, I can still step onto the pitch without knowing exactly what the game is going to throw at me.

I'm curious to know how this behavioral dynamic applies to human-vs-human matches.
I remember when I used to play against my friends, for example, using Controller 1, and after winning a series of matches, it would gradually become almost impossible to keep winning.
