Hi all! I've been on EvoWeb for around a year now. And I've come across this thread and some of the stories of how you found your love for PES and how we're all still playing the beloved classics. So just a brief introduction, my name is Cam and this is how I found my love for PES.
When I was younger, I was always the type to get the games that were heavily advertised on TV. So the FIFA Games, GTA Games, Tekken Games, WWE Games... Etc.
And back then the Internet wasn't the phenomenon that it was today. So all I was really seeing was the game advertisements via the TV.
So building up to one of my favourite releases ever (SmackDown Shut Your Mouth) a magazine in the UK called PSM2 was revealing early screenshots of SmackDown SYM, and along with the magazine you would always get a DVD Disk full of reviews and upcoming trailers. And on one of the disk's, there was a trailer for an upcoming game called Pro Evolution Soccer 2.
And this was the trailer that caught my eye (Link Below)
Hi Cam, Welcome to the corner, I really enjoyed your post. It was like looking into a mirror haha.
We both grew up in the UK relying on magazines for our gaming news fix, It's less than 20 years ago but yet;As we take technology and the internet for granted nowadays we have to tap each other on the shoulder and remind ourselves we didn't have that instant gratification of social media, Instant news and an internet updated every 10 seconds of the day!
I don't know whether it's because i'm getting older and mellowing out on new releases now or whether it's because theirs no mystique surrounding an upcoming release due to the fact your curiosity is satisfied instantly with all the trailers, press releases and preview game play beamed straight to your phone but... I never get excited the same way i did back then.
Especially for Wrestling and Football games because they we're considered niche and didn't get anywhere near enough as much gaming coverage as say a GTA game or a Final Fantasy title. I don't think it was until PES 5 that Official PlayStation Magazine really bananas on marketing and presenting the game hard like it was the Sonic 2 of football games. So that made every month and the handful of blurry screenshots and the tidbit of trivial information heighten my personal hype for games that much more than what we get now.
It's like being slowly seduced by a stripper compared to a gynaecological spread on PornHub.
The latter leaving you with the "Welp, That's that! move on to the next."
Any it's funny you mentioned Smackdown Shut Your Mouth, I actually made a tribute trailer to it yesterday!
This is probably my favourite wrestling game ever too, And i love many but like PES 5, If i had to pick one that meant the most to me in my life it'd be this one. They had the right balance of realism, Art style, Great animations and controls while keeping it simple and accessible not to mention reflecting a time when wrestling was still super popular and tight. I bring this up many times in this thread as
@miguelfcp can attest to, Realism can be really cool and it can be immersive but it can also be dangerous as it becomes a standard bearer especially to more casual gamers and it causes them to lack judgement and makes them dismissive of truly superior yet older games just because they're not 4K people simulators.
I used to want ultra realistic wrestling games when i was younger and with the recent WWE 2K games i got my wish, But i realised that strict realism, convoluted controls & real world simulation isn't as fun as i had hoped and it's actually really tedious to play, Almost like a chore even. That's when it occurred to me that balance is key - A fusion of recognisable realism that we understand makes sense yet is comprehensive to execute on the controller.
I've really gotten back into PES 2020 again on the PC and i'm enjoying it for the most part but on the subject of simple controls, As much as i despise PES 2019, The controls where perfectly fine for that game. Close dribble with R2, How it has always been for over a decade and not one single person has complained about it - Yet they decided to remap it to the right stick and it just doesn't work.
Nobody asked for this!
Any way Cam, I've gone on enough. I've seen your channel and i'm very impressed - It's nice to see more and more people embracing the older games and are willing to make videos about them and hopefully inspire new audiences. Hope we hear more from you!
