The Retro-PES Corner

its my phoenix patch gameplay from when i worked with those guys for 3 years, i use a mix of edited stats and correct formations with defensive lines etc to make a more realistic gameplay experience, Ive also slight OCD when it comes to individual players being correct when you play as them (theres 6 versions of diego maradona on this patch to match his whole career from 18 to 35, each with different stats to show where he is in his career for instance)
Sounds fantastic. Perhaps we could ask Sany to make an installer for your updated version.

Yes it would be to know as i am willing to try things even to improve PES2008 PS2 if possible :)

I would also love to see what edits have you employed. A bit of correct behaviour of players and teams freak myself.

Just doing some AI v AI test games (15mins) on a few of the Italian youth teams I've got finished so far. Doing a cup with the 7 that are done.

First one was Torino v Fiorentina

After a goalless first half Torino took the lead only for Fiorentina to first peg them back and then hit a winner. The first Torino goal was a lovely bit of football in and around the box before a fine finish.

my gameplay is all about trying to balance all the players on the field, i also like to make the ball as loose as possible and have a realistic fouling system, i also like star players to stand out more but the key to my gameplay is the formations and distances between players on the pitch like in real life so teams will attack and defend in one movement so there are not big spaces on the pitch. i generally lower speed, dribbling, passing , agility but raise teamwork , mentality and stamina relating to each position on the field, for instance most full backs will have higher stamina than say a central defender as they need it to run more up and down the touchline.

if sany wants to upload my updated files il happily send them on to him (full credit still to Shollym of course for the base patch)

il post up the option file for you guys to look at and try to see what im doing

That would be awesome.

Even if you could upload your OF alone, it would be great for some exploration. I do similar changes to you (though more the ones on the lowering side - agility, speed, accelration, passing speed), but it would be cool to compare. Especially the part of formations is interesting.

@mattmid Those were some awesome AI goals. PES 2013 had clever AI passing around the box. Older PES games players were shot happy even shooting from bad angles when a cut back pass is on, and ps3/xbox 360 Fifa games were pass happy around the box with no one wanting to take a shot. I found PES 2013 to have the right balance.

@Special4988 Yes I'm really liking it so far even though I feel like I'm 8 years late to the party! 2010-2014 kind of passed me by and then the newer one's I couldn't get into so I have spent most of the time on PES 3-6 since.

It seems a really nice balance. These youth players naturally have generally lower stats and the passing stats for the game are really bearing that out and there's lot of misplaced passes and interceptions making the game ebb and flow really nicely.

I was really pleased with the second game that played out. I'd messed up Juventus on the import, having forgotten I'd sorted the players before pasting in their positions meaning they were all messed up. I corrected it but because I'd already started the cup and they were due to play the team had already been picked based on the incorrect positions so there was a midfielder in goal and a keeper in midfield. Two midfielders up front and an AM at CB amongst others! I couldn't even do anything about like juggle the starting 11 around as I'd only selected three teams to control ( to change to coach mode) and their opponents I'd left as computer controlled, one of which was Juventus.

What I was pleased with is that this played out as you'd expect with Sassuolo winning 5-2 against a team of players mostly playing in the wrong positions. Juventus got a couple back in the second half after a couple of subs came on in correct positions which helped them a bit. Sassuolo had 8 shots, 7 on target and 5 went in as you'd expect against a midfielder in goal!

Guys, I wonder if there is a PES game for PS2 with more than eight directions for player movements when using the analog stick?

@geeeeee: 15 mins, 6-star difficulty, and Kampfgeist activated

@MafiaMurderBag: Wish I could like this post more than once. That's one of the reasons why retro-PES is so great: not only does each game provide a certain, unique version of football, you also have to adapt to each, understanding that some of the things that work on one game might not exactly work on the other. And if you spend enough time on one, then try out another, it'll feel like a fresh experience as you try to adapt to it. This is what I've been doing repeatedly over the last half decade at least and not once I got bored - how could one get tired of a rotation of literally dozens of entertaining games? It blows my mind that retro-PES is a niche and not an established, common, popular activity. The choice is between playing one game for one whole year (while most seem to get bored with it pretty quickly) or playing many great titles, some of them even are absolute classics; yet people still choose the first option. Will never understand this.

I think most people are not aware of the great patches for old titles. People usually want to play with new rosters and many of them want to compete online nowadays.

OMG, I was 100% certain it was held in Amsterdam Arena that I didn't even check. Thank you, I'm so glad you enjoyed it. :)

So I decided to pick up a old ML save I was doing with the default players. This ML I only managed the team, so I made formation changes, substitutions, and transfers. I left the gameplay up to my cpu players.

The first season just finished in division 2.

Table pts
West Ham 33 ---- promoted
Wolves 26 --- promoted
Stoke City 24
Bolton 24
West Brom 17
Birmingham 15
Anirthosis 10
(me)Nighthawks 4

We scored 4 goals all season and allowed 26 for a goal difference of -22!
Castolo had 3 goals and Gutierrez had 1

Well the season was quite ugly, but managing my team and watching their performances was quite exhilarating! Watching Ivarov in goal is borderline comedy. His positioning is horrible, and I distinctly remember him conceding at least 3 own goals with his butterfingers and somehow, even his head...

Some key players
Stein - Solid and consistant
Minanda - He was my super-sub. Great at picking out a dangerous pass
Stremer - Played multiple positions and never complained. Solid.

So unfortunately I was short on funds so had to unload a lot of players. Minanda, Dodo, Leiberman, and a few others gone.

But, I was amazed to find Modric who must have been released by Tottenham. So I signed him for a salary of just 347 points! Then watching him in the preseason games was amazing. His class was severely evident by watching the cpu controlling my players. So I have decided to build a team around him. I picked up a few other cheap young players just to build my squad up.

I have to say I am excited for season 2 to see if my team improves. (they better..)

@Special4988 Nice signing! That's going to be fun to see how he gets on with the very average players around him. He's sure to make a big difference and at the very least Castolo will miss altogether better chances next season! Sounds like a fun season you just had despite results, it gives you a little insight into the life of a manager too doesn't it. The absolute helplessness once the players are on the pitch!

Just thank your lucky stars it was Ivarov and not Zamenhof! Although heading one in is quite special :D

I think when I've made this Youth OF I'm working on that's something I'd like to try on 2013. Managing the team in the ML and let the cpu play it out.

Just watched another AI test game, this time AC Milan v Genoa which ended a thrilling 3-3! This was a brilliant moment of individual skill from Genoa striker, Bianchi. Just a shame he couldn't finish it off. Would have been a late winner too!

@mattmid Haha, I don't think I had Zamenhof even start a game for us. I didn't have the funds for a GK so Ivarov will be back in goal for us for another season. I think this time I will save his bloopers so I can make a montage at the end of the season and post on my season recap.

Managing is definitely a different experience, but something at the moment is quite enjoyable. Great individual skill by Bianchi! Shame he couldn't score as when I watch real football highlights when you see a great dribbling sequence, then the clip stops because there wasn't an end result. Always takes away some of the luster.

@Meazza84 Great final! So many moments when I thought the game would be decided.
I especially loved Van Der Sar in the background trying to put off Viera.

After the exotic bounce around various J-Leagues of the past weeks, days ago I decided to go back to Pes 3. It was some good some time since I wanted to retake this masterpiece, and all the retro football tv is proposing during these days in my country, inspired me to finally start a ML here. With a simple rule: only players of 34 or older. My aim is to build a sort of very personal "old guys" all star (hopefully not too overpowered). I picked Weser: I didn't want to edit a team and their Pele's Cosmos-like kit looked perfect for the occasion.

The league started with mixed results, but luckily I could catch the promotion train soon enough. My first buy, and the guy I'll compose the team around, was my idol Roberto Baggio, which I exchanged for Minanda (sorry guys) and some money on my part. He started quite bad and he even got injured for a couple matches, then he luckily helped us reach both the D2 Cup and the first two positions.

The end was pure thrill: in the last 2 fixtures I had (in this order) Lisbonera and Bourgogne. The table said this:

classificaduegiornate.jpg

so in theory a draw against Lisbonera would have been enough. But in a dramatic twist, they won against me 0-2 with a superb Nuno Gomes (who also got my Vornander a red card+penalty) and promotion was almost lost.

Miraculously, in the last game I managed to beat Bourgogne 1-2 and West London White beat Lisbonera, so I got my play-offs ticket:

classificafinale.jpg

Then I had a fantastic D2 Cup final against Bourgogne (truly the season's rivals, since I'll find them again in the play-offs togheter with Athenakos and Emilia Sud).

Had a red card in the second half, managed to keep the 0-0 and went in the extra times; I was able to score with a good Barota shoot only to have them draw with an half bycicle by Cissè. Arrived at the penalties and won 5-4 in what seemed like a true real life drama :D

Celniniwiththecup.jpg

Hope I'll be able to grab promotion. I already bought Aldair and Mauro Silva for next season and hope more will come from summer market.

I think we talked to death about the brilliant gameplay of this chapter, but I'd like to remark once more how simple and yet full of depth this game is. AI often tries to play football, teams are well positioned, single players try to play their strengths and make "intelligent" choices, referees and refereeing in general is very varied. When I was in the final's extra time, with a man less and my poor defaults almost dead.. man, all the struggle in the field of the 22 felt so real.

Can't wait to play more!

Matt be carefull when you use stadium editor, you may accidentally create some licensed stadium parts.... :P :D

does anyone have any pes3/we7 option file(s), perhaps with ingame editor kits?

wolf and wendetta patches have so much errors with kits/faces.

did anyone else edited pes3/we7 besides wolf and wendetta team? (i was fifa player back in those days so i don't know about pes editing scene in 2003/2004)

Ohhhh yeah. I totally forgot about my one! Was in the middle of testing in and that was weeks and weeks ago.

It has:

  • In-game kits for the 2003-04 season (not mine, I may add)
  • 10s (100s? Lost count) of created players.
  • Squads correct and complete as of 17/10/2003 (UK release date)
  • Basel and Lokomotiv Moscow created over PES/WE United
I'll find it and post as is later today.

So we know that 360 degree player movement was introduced in 2009, right? Because it was supposedly so difficult to implement, right?

What if I told you that Konami already had 360-degree movement before it even made PES, long before the PS2 era?

So now I'm playing ISS 64 for Nintendo 64 and if you use the analog stick the players can move in any direction, just like in PES 2013. That blew my mind! I realized that the Tokyo branch that made ISS Pro Evo didn't want to introduce it on purpose and not because it was too difficult. They stuck to that decision for a very long time, until PES 2010, and God were they right about it!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway, here are all Euro 2000 goals in one post. I officially consider the tournament successfully closed :D

@Madmac79 Somehow (and particularly the early years) never fail to produce ML drama in the season. I remember the one I posted here, I think just about every one of the first six seasons I was in the promotion hunt at some stage or other with several of them going right to the wire. I don't recall the details now but I think one I really threw away with some late losses when I finally thought this was the season.

What a great first season you had there. Love the idea of the (reverse?) age cap too. There'll no doubt be some disappointments along the way like when a new signing announces he's retiring a few weeks after joining! :D Good luck for the play offs.

A nice little clip here to show that individual stats still mattered in 2013 (nice to know!)

The winger has a Top Speed of 85, the CB chasing him (in fact starting ahead of him in the clip) has Top Speed of 65. Even over this 20/30 yard distance you can clearly see he's much quicker. :)

Even in slowmo (first) you can see it and then full speed afterwards just highlights it even more.

i would be very grateful if you could find it and share it with us ;)

I know I said I was going to interrupt my ML save after the first season, perhaps for a few WC attempts, but I couldn't let go of my beloved Defaults so I headed straight to the 2nd season, the first on D1.

I couldn't believe my eyes when after the first six matches, I had only one goal scored and...zero conceded!, putting ML United in a comfortable 5th place of the league. However, the cutthroat stamina/fatigue system of PES5 kicked in soon enough, forcing me to create a more profound rotation between first-teamers and reserves - to the point where now I don't exactly have a starting-11 but rather 15,16 players that get almost all the minutes. That, combined with the necessary tactical adjustments to accommodate those bench players, has started to wreck havoc on ML United's performance. I haven't won the last two matches, in fact I lost them both and conceded 6 goals on just those two encounters, and as a result the team is now far from the top of the league, five points away from the first relegation spot.

Right now, I'm more worried about whether we can survive and entire season rather than whether we avoid relegation. If high-stamina folks like Ruskin/Espimas/Stein are naturally able to collect match after match without much fatigue, the vast majority of our squad is totally unprepared, hence guys like Minanda/Ximelez/Castolo not being able to play two matches in a row as of now.

Here's a couple of a substantial portion of our goals scored...:

@miguelfcp Minanda's still got it :) Which means just one open play goal in eight matches! Just never know what to expect with the ML do you? I guess this is where you say "We weren't ready to go up yet!" It'll be a great effort to stay particularly as there's nobody really that you can buy is there at this stage?
