The Retro-PES Corner

@Special4988: I've never done a challenge like that one of only managing the team on the ML, but I've done plenty of CPU vs. CPU on PSP PES and it's surprisingly an enjoyable experience just to watch the matches. I always had the idea that it would be tedious but it's far from it really. To be honest, the excellent gameplay of the PSP versions help a lot.

@Madmac79: That's the thing, it's hard to understand how much depth 08 has if you just watch the highlight of a great goal, or a youtube video of the gameplay itself. When I captured those videos I showed here, I did it because I had noticed an interesting thing in-game, but really I only had noticed the tip of the iceberg: I saw Sousa dropping deeper to get the ball, and Porto's blonde CB running forward to catch Gutierrez offside. That's it. Turns out that was only 10% of what was happening on the pitch; and it wasn't only until I posted those videos here that I understood the whole mechanics behind each play, the AI showcasing its true potential with every move and counter-move on just a few seconds. Then you notice that the iceberg is actually GIGANTIC.

Because of the comments here, i tried again to play PES 2008 without any global adjustments, but i really don't like it. It's far too easy to dribble through the defence, the speed is insane and the cutback is even more effective than in PES 6. Yes, the CPU score lot of goals, but concede also far too much goals IMO. In a nutshell, a good CPU but too much weaknesses to exploit as a human. In fact, default PES 2008 really feels like PES 6 with better CPU and easier free kicks (good thing though, they were nearly impossible to score in PES 6).

I really recommend to play with the global adjustments i posted earlier. Here is the default option file adjusted if you want to try: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uDPDSk3jqWu7yu2HuidUx3isUXvSdWfS/view

I've had matches that can definitely feel more arcade, while some matches are endless midfield battles that push it more to a sim-like experience, overall I think it manages a nice balance between fun and realism; while providing enough unpredictability to keep the experience fresh over time. Of course it helps that I've been playing with a weaker team, but as I've said before I believe any retro-PES shines more when controlling weaker sides. Maybe it's because it's harder for those players to "hack the system" and use it to their advantage all the time (like real-life Ronaldo does when he scores 50 goals a season).

This is a PES 2019 thread, so won't say much. PES 6 was fun, had variety but can't be called a simulation.

Absolutely not, which is why it still baffles me why even PS2 patchmakers use PES6 as a platform (base) for their patches. While PES has never been a true simulation, there are other retro-PES games which would be more suitable for those works.

Honestly I don't find dribbling this easy. Or better told, it depends on the match. Sometimes I face an opponent that gives me a lot of space and it's indeed easier. Some others they put more men in their half and it's harder. But generally I see defenders acting more aggressively than the norm. I was playing a France-Germany some days ago, in which I remember going up 2-0, and dominating the field with Henry.. then in the second half, not only he was more tired and naturally less responsive, but after they scored the 2-1 they started with hard tackles, fouls and a more direct manner, so that he wasn't effective as before. Until now I've found a quite satisfying variety even in the way CPU defends.

That said, this game IS indeed basically Pes 6 with a pumped AI and some tweaks. The two games compared feels like night and day to me, but I think the heart of the engine is mostly that one, so there are limitations.

The cutbacks are indeed a bit op, especially when you have a lot of space, but I don't find it particularly bad to limit myself in that regard. There always have been a number of OP things I tend to not do through all the saga, especially in the Ps2 chapters, but as long as I can't regularly sprint for all the field, or limit myself in other significant way, I'm fine.

So today ,after one month,at last i achieved to finish my first D2 season in pes6 ML,TopPlayer with pes6 pech patch 2017-2018.I don't know what tweaks these dudes did but the gameplay is different, i find it more challenging. I was thinking to follow the defaults challenge, as i had never played with them since 2006.But i am coward, so i started with the defaults and 1.500p budget and decided to sign players without limitations.My first season was so tough,the cpu moped the floor with my face.I finished 7th 3w-2d-9L.I avoided game over by reloading one time due to miscalculations.It was an awesome challenge.All my MLs before were with club original players, my budget now was mininum,my pes6 skills abandoned me after so many years had to play the game intensively. It was the first time in my life that i did not promote Now to D1 from the first season. For the second season i signed J-F. ARP from HSV and Dylan Zuniga from Liga Chilena.The rest are defaults. I also failed to sell Zamenhof :(

So after this , it came to my mind that since i don't want to follow strictly the challenges, i can use some rules to have a better experience. And i jumped to my pes2008 ps2 version because i wanted to honour a player i love so much and i could only find in a vanilla pes. My beloved ROMALDINHO
This dude is the peak of KONaMi creativity for me ,fake but so original in the same time,he is cool,he is cult,he is El Loco ! So i started my "Romaldinho" challenge. Initiated a ML with the option create my own team,i picked ML United which always had really cool badge btw (bravo again to Konami creativity ) with the well known ML defaults and in the 4 empty slots of the roster i picked Romaldinho and 3 free agents,Giuseppe Rossi as i need a left footed profilic right winger,K. Mbappe who i created from PSD and M. Valbuena who has low stats in pes2008.So i play 4-2-1-3.All defaults except the 1 cmf is Valbuena,the 2 ss in atack are Mbappe and Rossi and the place of King Minanda ,amf+no10+capitano went to Romaldinho. Minanda will go as a supersub to give our team some good playmsking after 60' minutes with more clear mind.In the first match we achieved a draw (1-1).Lets see whats next.Maybe i ll keep also some dudes like Espinas,Ruskin,El Mubarki.The rest will get sold and I'll try to bring better original players to build a squad around Romaldinho!!! I also started a difficult mission,the de-capitalisation of PES 2008,which annoys me in every new pes since then.Hope i will find time to play matches the next days.Cheers! !:SNACK:

@fmicablues7 heh heh we had this discussion in “The Lost Game” thread. I think we all just play differently so some prefer different games which is a good thing.

As i have mentioned before, i don’t find the dribbling easy at all. This includes in my ML tester as Spurs. So i have Son, Moura, Lamela and a few others that have good dribbling and speed stats but it is pretty even not over powered for me.

Even the cut back pass i have scored only one goal from. Once i did score the Adaptive AI has become better at defending it now.

I played 4 games tonight in my ML tester. The first i won 2-1, then lost 2-0, lost 1-0, and finally won 2-1 again. All really good games.

Then i played a World Cup tester, Saudi Arabia (me) v Uruguay. I went 1-0 up after about 6 mins and i thought hmm this will be easier. How wrong was i as Uruguay pummeled my goal. Hitting the woodwork 3 times and having all different types of shots. They got two penalties and Suarez scored them both. Finished 2-1. What i like is how much of a struggle it was playing as Saudi Arabia. Only having one shot on target in the match.

The top teams are really hard to beat and the bottom teams a bit easier. Showing further proof that stats do matter.

@miguelfcp i’m enjoying your little clips on AI play and positioning. Here is one for you. I am Spurs in white defending on the left wing. Notice how i try to run my defender back to stop the AI winger with the ball but then the other AI attacker steps back to block me and succeeds.

Admittedly my defending is pretty bad.

@fmicablues7 , buddy, what is the highest winning streak you have had in PES 3 ML at the top difficulty setting ?
I believe it will be a low number. My longest winning run in PES 3 is five games.
And I was playing with the likes of Salas, R. Keane, Nedved and Nesta in my team back then.

PES 3 is still the ultimate test of skill and most realistic gameplay experience. :COAT::COAT::COAT:

@slamsoze way to go mate. I love to build teams around a single star/player too sometimes.. did it once with Socrates and ten incredibly bad players in Pes 5, another time in Pes 11 with Schwarz (a few seasons in that game and he feels like a left footed Batistuta). It makes for a nice gameplay. Plus it's good to have some freedom in transfers once in a while.

I also remember Romaldinho very well.. he's a legend, along with many other fictional players of the time :D.

@geeeeee my experience with dribbling in 2008 so far has mimicked yours. It's all so varied. I truly never felt such tactical and even individual depth in a Ps2 era game. I played against Inter and boy, that Vieira dominating the midfield with his balance and positioning was quite something.

But honestly I don't even feel like analyzing too much the game, for now. I load the emu, I set a nice Cup or even an exhibition and I know I'm hooked. Man, this game.

3 players of my Lazio golden age.. respect:GSCARF:.

@geeeeee: That's really interesting, you can clearly see that after he blocks you he then focuses on providing a passing lane, which makes it seem that he absolutely intended to block your player...I've never noticed it but now I have to see if it happens to me too.

Like I had predicted, Matic's no longer on-fire after his wonderful start of the season. Not only did he stop scoring goals, but his actions overall are less successful now. Even with a top condition arrow, he's just not on form anymore.

Regarding building teams around a player, one day I'm going to choose a retro-PES game, put Zidane in a team like PES United and rename every single player of the squad except him as "Piece of Wood", also reducing their stats drastically. Then my goal is to win the WEFA Championships with Zidane and 10 Pieces of Wood, and dedicate the win to the memory of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Admittedly, i'm a bit harsh about PES 2008. I tend to compare too much with PES3's gameplay. Anyway, I hope one day someone will work out a way to put PES 2008's gameplay into PC PES 6. It would be the ultimate game with all that modded content.

Never played a "proper" ML in PES 3, mate. So, i can't say for sure. However, i know I can lose even with a team full of superstars, which is great.

I thought also to change some names but after i thought that these names and ideas is a piece of art of the good old KONAMI. They even have put commentary callnames for everyone like Virota, Razetow.It points how much konami used to care and polish their product treating it with real love.I felt that i will disrespect a piece of art if i do critical changes.
Look what we have today in PES united. ZARADONA, a cheep Maradona ripoff with random allocated stats and Toroba when in greek Troba "T(o)roba" means the tool we put air to bicycle tubes or metaphorically Trobas is a guffy guy who has his mind to watch porn vids and masturbate all day without having any sex!!! :P
Your last part about Sir Alexs memory confused me,for a moment i thought he died one of these days.I searched wikipedia to check that he is still ok! :D

Okay I am more or less back, seventh season has been started yesterday, which is crazy, I usually play five seasons of Master League at best. Maybe ML without player development is better? Or at least goes on longer. In PES5+ once you grab top talent player it just takes two or three seasons for them to grow and become great. It's fun to produce new great players, especially if its someone unlikely to become one, but takes a bit from team building challenge.

The stars! We have four now!

Anyway, let's have a look at what went down in Season 6:

pes3 28-07-2018 23-01-24-960.png

Yep, this happened. I am so mad about those two losses! And they happened one after another too...first we've lost 0-2 against Westfalen, well they were pretty damn good at the time so I can't blame them. But another loss was against Weser and this was a game full of shit! Comfortable 2-1 lead, then Dudek, the guy who does the things he does just for the fun of it and it never works out lets in two absolute baboon shoots, and we end up losing. But hey, we've won all games ever since and ended up going on a 16 league games win streak, the second best in Eastern League's history. Record - 17 league wins in a row - belongs to 1971-1972 Stadhuisplein, but they are in Division 2 now and of no consequence so no one talks about them. Dutchies are bad, real bad. All their teams got relegated to D2, damn they're bad!

Back in the day 90% of my goals in MLs would be scored by one singular person who I wanted to become top scorer of everything. How times changes! I've scored 78 goals in 26 games and everyone got to slip a few in. Hyypia, Kaladze and Ignashevich scored some headers from corner kicks. Scholes got only three or four goals total, but usually they were extremely important equalisers in a desperate times. Every attacker, except of Kemar who is total shite and ended up playing nothing, got a lot of goalers in. Bemar was king of the league scorer, Keznan got the golden boot in D1 Cup and WEFA Champs. Even with Dudek guy in goal, there was hardly any worry since we'd usually score so many goals losses at the back hardly mattered :D

pes3 28-07-2018 23-01-46-211.png

Third year in a row, we've met Ruhr in D1 Cup Finale. This time it was a no-nonsense game, 6-0 to Commonwealth and we defend the least important trophy of all without breaking a sweat. Respect to Nord though, they've managed to not lose our second leg. Not that a 2-2 draw helped them, they've lost first game 1-4 anyway :)

pes3 28-07-2018 23-01-51-811.png

There is, however, a stain on Commonwealth's honour this season, as we have lost our title of #1 Best Football Team in the World. Let me explain.

After rough group stage, we went against Lombardia fully knowing they are danger men. And they were, for first twenty minutes. We win 8-1 on aggregate and easily go through, to meet our ultimate rivals of the last season, Merseyside Red in the semis. Fear and panic sets in after Commonwealth ends up losing first leg at Polski Stadium in Poland 0-1 thanks to some sort of Virota guy's header. That however, was not enough to break us. Rematch at Enfield's Ground ends with a devastating 0-4 blow dealt to Englishmen with Keznan and Hakan Unsal destroying our former goalie, Kuszczak, in his own goal place.

I wanted a huge final against the best team I've ever met in Europe, Chamartin, but anti-footballers from Cataluna somehow managed to eliminate them, coming back from 0-1 defeat in leg #1 and winning their rematch 2-0.

I was playing the final in the midst of madness. It was a terrible Saturday, some rough irl stuff happened. I am sorting this out now and it looks like it's gonna be okay (no need for details) but that Saturday was really, really bad. I was already tired of playing, somewhat boozed, had enough of it. Saviola quickly banged one in, and we went absolute panzerfist on them. Rustu Recber (remember that guy!) had a time of his life between the posts. Eventually Keznan squeezed in the equaliser, but game went into extra time, and then penalties. Rustu stopped Keznan in the first series of PKs, and that was enough. It ends 4-5 and Grand WEFA Trophy is getting packed into a nice box and sent from Poland to Catalonia. Damn this sucks! T'was a terrible day for Commonwealth indeed.

***

But now it's Season 7. League start was a bit slow, we've got two draws with Valdai and Lisbonera but otherwise we continue to beat the everliving shit out of everyone. Our WEFA Championship group consisting of Lombardia, AC Milan and Merseyside Red has been crushed. Six wins, twenty one goals in six games. We lead in the league, waiting to start D1 Cup...bussiness as usual.

There was only one transfer, we've exchanged trashy man Kemar with Azur for Russian Danger Man Titov, he's slow and bulky too but already scored a few in, definitely an improvement over big bald man - which is sad I really wanted to like him :(

Despite being mega overpowered at this point, I love this team so much. Winning is still satisfying and enjoyable, having all that power at your disposal allows you to do some crazy stuff. Your team grows with you and you don't want to stop, you just wanna keep going and enjoy your creation.

This is what Master League has always been about. Best game mode in history of video games.

This is one hell of a post. Again, I thank you all for your presence, it just makes my life that one bit easier and happier :)

@papinho81
You can edit some camera properties with PES 3 kitserver. I moved my camera far, far away and can see a lot of the pitch. I should consider turning radar off for extra challenge :D

@slamsoze
This is fantastic idea! Especially in PES 3, where players don't age so you could keep your danger man forever. Once I move to Italy in PES3, I definitely want to build my team around Enrico Chiesa, I've faced him once in WEFA Champs, seen his stats - he's legendary!

Talking of Mbappe, it reminds me - did you guys know Aubameyang(?) is in PES3? He's in AC Milan I saw him in WEFA Champs and was mightly surprised he was already around back then, unless it's just a coincidence.

@miguelfcp
Excellent stuff on teamwork, it's really important stuff and I started treasuring it a lot too. Having a few players in 90+ teamwork and some around 60 if not less, I can sometimes tell there's a difference in their behaviour even in PES 3. As it turns out all those things were doable ten, fifteen years ago - what now?

What a time to be alive, only thing that keeps me interested in new PES game is...licenses :LMAO:Gameplay won't change much, but I'd love to give Denmark, Switzerland or Scotland a go.

Loving all the ideas and stories going on here. For the next ML, I guess I'll get some sort of index going in my signature so it's easier to follow the entire story. Ultimately I'd love to just record some games live but it's impossible at the moment and it will stay that way for quite a while.

About Aubameyang i fell in the trap also in 2008.He is today's Auba's brother Willy, who played also for St. ETTIENE and Milan but is French Nationality.His father was also named Pierre Aubameyang but retired in 2002 and worked for Milan as scout.I thought the same and moved him instantly to Arsenal when i saw him in pes 2008 to discover after the truth.

Also a hig problem for me with retro pes ,despite i am a fan of players progression ,is that after 2-3 years that your team is OP, no team makes any proposal to buy any players from you, so if i want to refresh the roster,which i like to do change the 7/11 every 3 seasons, i must do swaps with crappy pkayers and release them or not renew contract.Even if i transferlist many pkayers only 1-2 are hardly sold.This is the only fact i like from the newer pes.However they dont have transfer frequency you can sell even 15 players in the same transfer window.
P.S: The "L" key is near to "K" and my fingers are too fat for a smartphone,thats why i always write "pkayers" instead of "players"! :P

@geeeeee @miguelfcp Glad you mentioned the blocking, I'd forgotten to say about that. The AI defenders are experts at that, doing it all the time. I had one last night, I'd tried a chipped through ball over the top, I was chasing it with the two CB's, one of them was going to get it first and his mate stepped into my path and slowed right up. Having done that and checked my momentum completely, he then moved across to the side to give the other guy an option for a pass if he needed it, but he in fact decided to play safe and hoofed it out for a throw in. Bastards :LOL:

Okay I am more or less back, seventh season has been started yesterday, which is crazy, I usually play five seasons of Master League at best. Maybe ML without player development is better? Or at least goes on longer. In PES5+ once you grab top talent player it just takes two or three seasons for them to grow and become great. It's fun to produce new great players, especially if its someone unlikely to become one, but takes a bit from team building challenge.

The stars! We have four now!

Anyway, let's have a look at what went down in Season 6:

View attachment 5400

There is, however, a stain on Commonwealth's honour this season, as we have lost our title of #1 Best Football Team in the World. Let me explain.

@Anjin , that is a hell of a table, no contest at all for you in PES 5. What difficulty setting are you playing at and are you signing any real life player you can afford ?

Reason I ask is you clearly are like the kid in the arcade back in the day who would get an hour of game time for ten pence and nearly burn out the arcade cabinet.

The ultimate gaming challenge awaits you, my main men @miguelfcp , @mattmid and I are all attempting the PES version of playing Deep Blue and IBM in a chess grand championship at the same time.

@papinho81
You can edit some camera properties with PES 3 kitserver. I moved my camera far, far away and can see a lot of the pitch. I should consider turning radar off for extra challenge :D

@slamsoze

@miguelfcp

@Anjin , that is one hell of a table. Clearly you have zilch competition in PES 5 ML. What gameplay difficulty are you playing at and are you signing unlimited numbers of players ?

@slamsoze

At the moment I am back to one. It seems five small stars = one big star.

Excellent research on Aubameyangs, I knew something was wrong with it! It's a neat little detail, maybe I'll find a spot for him in my next ML? :D

@WhoAteMeDinner
Those are my ML settings:

In the next ML I might tweak transfer settings a little bit. But first and foremost I want to 1.) fix fake player names 2.) lower injury resistance across the board so there's even more need for rotation.

As for Season 7, this is what I've achieved so far:

Pro Evolution Soccer 3 05.08.2018 14_53_59.png

Kudos to Ruhr for chasing me, their only lost game so far was 1-6 against us :D It seems Ruhr, Hanseaten and Weser are the most consistent teams across last two or three seasons. Longobardi, Marmara, Rekordmeister and Westfalen are 50/50 - great season followed by a disaster. Prague and Lisbonera get bonus points because they are really bad stats-wise but somehow they are not complete pushovers.

Pro Evolution Soccer 3 05.08.2018 14_54_08.png

Some usual members of WEFA Champs Top 8. Commonwealth, Old Firm Blue, Cataluna and North London. Sadly no sight of Chamartin even in group stage. Peloponnisos is but a memory at this point.

Either way I will have great memories from European competitions once this Master League ends. Every ML campaign writes its own story and some shitty scripts and scenario are not needed. And that was fifteen years ago!

Quo vadis, Konami...

@slamsoze: You're right, now that I'm reading it it doesn't sound so good. Sorry Sir Alex!
You're right, I haven't had any transfer offer in my save so far. On one hand it could be a problem, but for challenges like the Generations Mode I'm playing it's definitely a good thing, as I only have to worry about renewing contracts and I don't fear any of my players being picked up by bigger sides. That's one of the greatest advantages of Retro-PES, particularly when compared to modern football gaming (not just FIFA and PES, but FM too): those retros are the only football games that allow you to build a team like teams were built a long time ago, with a group of guys that stuck around together for decades in the same club. Due to the nature of modern football, you can't pull this off in any modern game because as in real-life, players are always leaving from one club to the other and at an increasingly faster pace.
Which is why Retro-PES is the ideal platform for challenges such as the ones we have on our Vault, many of those require that you're able to have full control over your squad over the years regarding transfers in and out (again, like the Generations Mode in which players can't be sold); you just don't have anywhere near that level of control in any other football game these days.

@Anjin: As usual, great write-up. This is what the Corner is all about! I'm impressed you're still hooked to that save, despite that you're a dominant force in the ML world, which really says a lot about the quality of PES3.
Anyway, whether you decide to move on for another ML save or not, and regardless of how you'll "report" your adventures, please do keep it coming.

@WhoAteMeDinner: The blame goes all on me. I welcomed them with a portrait of the glorious teflon-gloved Ivarov and now the Corner is famous in Russia. This was supposed to be a secret, but do keep an eye on news channel RT on the following days, for a story about the rising popularity of Retro-PES will be shown there.
However, if any of the bots bother any of you, we have the solution...

Think you may want to give the Default Originals Challenge a go, @Anjin , as five star difficulty in PES 5 is not a challenge for you anymore. Look at @miguelfcp 's posts on this mother of all PES Master League tests of skill and determination. It has defeated me six times and I have not played any other level than top player or five star in any PES game. :SHOCK::SHOCK::SHOCK:

Thanks Migs, if the evo-forums cafeteria gets overrun, I will call on this enforcer and maybe Macco and Giersen for extra muscle. I think the BOTs are breeding like rabbits or something. :OH::OH::OH:

As for RT, I only watch Max Keiser and George Catface.

PES Retro Quiz of the Day:

Which two players from the same country are the most expensive in terms of salary pts in PES 3 ?

(Just guess please, stay of the pes databases thingys.):NONO::NONO::NONO:
Leaving classics outside i would say "Bobo" Vieri and maybe Totti?
Vieri for some reason was a beast in pes 3 & 4.
