The Retro-PES Corner

I've been recently playing the Wii version of PES 2010 on the Dolphin emulator, and I must say, that game is insanely good! It's like they got the heavier, more realistic gameplay of the 7th gen consoles and managed to fit it in the 6th gen PES engine, considering the lesser capabilities of the Wii hardware, with improved graphics and more teams too. I suggest you all try to give it a shot.
The Wii versions are great. I think they incorporated 360 degree movement from 2010 or 2011 too.

About time someone other than me gave the Wii games some love. Every single version on the Wii is a great game. 2008 - 2013 are all amazing. I play using classic controller style but even the playmaker style is great if you want a different way to play football

So, the other day I was criticizing WE7:I (PS2 JP exclusive version) on here quite virulently. While upon playing further I've managed to find enjoyment in it, there's one facet that's so much better than PES3 that it's not even funny: AI vs AI matches. They actually feel and play like a proper football match here. There's a lovely lack of ridiculous goals, zero defending, almighty headers, midfielders blasting down the field for 40 meters unopposed and scoring.

Yeah it's a bit of an improvement over PES 3 although sometimes it's fun to have ridiculous goals. It is a game after all. So initially I understood why you would prefer PES 3 over WE7i because I do think there's more fun to be had on PES 3 but WE7i is definitely an improved version as far as the overall gameplay is concerned. I don't think you can wrong with either though.👍

3 is definitely quirky but I love it so much. I’m someone who actually prefers 3 over we7i ps2.

There’s no doubting they refined some elements and it definitely still plays a great game but I find the passing on we7i is that little bit quicker in moments which I personally dislike. Plus the AI catch up when dribbling, while definitely needing some tweaking from pes3, for me it feels a little too much. It’s another thing that ultimately makes things feel more frantic and quicker.
I also wondered a bit about the physicality of players but this might have been placebo and related to the aforementioned catch up. Just felt like the ball carrier can get pushed off it very easily. Again it increased the pace of the game for me which I disliked compared to 3.

I've noticed a lot of people seem to like a slower paced game these days. When these games got released I don't think anyone mentioned that they were too fast etc. The aging process is getting you all 😄
Although I'm old AF I still prefer a faster paced game of football, end to end, it's just more exciting to me. PES 3 speed is fine for me as is WE7i. I look at some newer PES mods etc and I'm just like "Ugh that's so slow!" Id fall asleep between passes 😂

It might be true that my reactions are not what they used to be! I'm definitely picking up on fairly minor points (especially between these regional iterations) and they are all great versions to me, but when you play these classics as much as we on this thread do, you inevitably develop a preference. 3 and 5 to me are leagues ahead of 4 and 6 for example, and that is mostly down to the ball physics (speed).

Well I like 3,5 and 6 for sure but I definitely don't like PES 4, however I recently played WE8LE and it's a really good game. Doesn't feel anyway like PES 4 to me. Feels like the gameplay is closer to PES 5 but the shooting is different and there's not loads of fouls. Maybe give that version a shot if you get chance

Yeah WE8LE is on my list to check out properly. I have it on ps2 emulator and have played some matches on it but need to give it a longer run.

And controversial of me I know, but I am actually a big fan of the refs/amount of fouls on pes5. It’s one of its main strengths for me.

Because we get to have lots of goes at free kicks 😄👍

If you're a fan (as i am) with amount of fouls, contact, and very defensive game try WE9 jap. For most of us it was on that era it was the pinacle of all PES/WE in terms of realism. We were even disappointed when we played first PES5 as the game was more open and direct, less def AI interceptions.

With the recoil PES5 is more balanced and fun while the other is perhaps a bit too defensive... At least it takes longer to master the game and mostly, scores goals, getting high scores like 4-3 etc.

The AI in We9 seems very harmless.

Olá, como vai?!

Você por acaso tem o patch com o arquivo de opção e abaixo do patch

Patch de História da Copa do Mundo PES 2009 1.0

Muito obrigado!

Hello 👋

I’ve not been on here for a while. Hope everyone is well 🙂

I was exploring some ISOs on Vimms Lair last night and I noticed there is a PES 5 PS2 beta 😮. I haven’t seen this before. The only unlocked modes are Training and Network. It is not very interesting but I wondered if there would be any ‘lost’ assets in the ISO somewhere? I don’t have the skills to explore the ISO but it might be interesting to some of you. The English unlicensed team names are very interesting 🤣

I think it has only recently been uploaded to the site.

The version date is July 2005 which would be a few months before retail release.

Good findings!
I tried to grab one copy of it on eBay after seeing your post.

thanks for letting us know, maybe we could find some interest stuff there! maybe they left code!

Konami did but on PSP, with WE 2014 Aoki Samourai
is there any differences gameplay wise? im wondering if i should get the aoki version and also the japanese versions of PES games on the PSP. they all have superstar difficulty which their PES counterparts dont have on other regions (US AND EU).

Also consider getting the N3DS one instead (be careful to the region lock)
I cannot comment on the game play (no difference to me personally), but it was the last release with PS2-like engine.

N3DS one also includes the J.League, but the PSP was just a season update (without J.League).

and if im not wrong the n3ds has 3rd kit for some teams!

i actually meant ai gameplay differences in superstar mode on the winning eleven versions of the PES PSP games compared to top player in PES. i always wondered if they are the same but then again, i played superstar and it felt easier compared to top player on PES on the PSP versions . also pes 2014 was on psp already? also there is a version of Winning eleven 2011 and 2012 on the PSP which has english as a selectable language and also has the Superstar difficulty which i find interesting.

People have asked me before how to get widescreen patches working with PCSX2 for different Pro Evolution Soccer and Winning Eleven titles so I have written a small explanation to help users below.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, so with PCSX2 widescreen patches come in the form of .pnach files. The emulator comes bundled with a large amount for most titles but for some games you may need to Google and find a widescreen patch that has been made specifically for your title. With PES and WE we are lucky that nearly all games are covered.

If the ISO has not been modified directly to be widescreen and there are no other changes to the render window such as camera position, then it should be fine to use the available widescreen .pnach patch for your particular title. However there are times when the CRC has changed between different versions of the ISO or as a result of further edits.

In such a circumstance you will need to determine the CRC value of the ELF file in the PS2 ISO image. This is done by enabling the Log Window within PCSX2 and monitoring it for information during the boot sequence of the game.

In this example, PCSX2 is booting my copy of Winning Eleven 7 International (NTSC-J) which is SLPM_654.98 and has a Game CRC value of 2D9EF7CB (as shown in red in the image above).

Previously before the 2.0 update of PCSX2 widescreen .pnach patches came in one format, with just the CRC value. Since the 2.0 update the format for .pnach widescreen patches has changed slightly and they now include the SCAJ/SCEA/SCES/SLPM/SLKA title followed by the CRC value. Both formats are shown below.

Screenshot 2025-06-30 000244.png

Regardless of the format, in order to change an existing widescreen patch to make it compatible with your version of the ISO all you have to do is simply change the CRC value to the one that shows up in the Log Window. For example if the Winning Eleven 7 International widescreen patch I had was titled SLPM-65498_D14Z3G62.pnach I would now rename it to SLPM-65498_2D9EF7CB.pnach to match the value shown in the Log Window. That's all you need to do to make the widescreen patches compatible between different versions in most situations.
