The Retro-PES Corner

PES 5...
First of all, I've said it before but I'll say it again, it is THE best footy game ever made... still. Having said that, I agree the attacking AI can lack a little oomph at times in ML. Interesting if it is different in other modes.

What I do to combat this and to raise the difficulty generally is to curtail my ML team in terms of superstar players. Basically, I don't have any. The teamwork thing, as @BluesyShrimper says, does have an effect as does the annoying fact that you rarely get transfer offers for your own players in ML other than for the defaults when listed.

I have a ML going at the moment with a strict 400 point wage cap. I have started with the defaults and any player who dares to want more than 400 a season for a new contract is out. Likewise, I limit myself to only signing available players (youth and unattached) for a wage of 400 or under. Maximum swayed size: 23.

It's a shame to have to do this but I've found 'house rules' necessary to make just about every PES down the years more compelling / challenging in the long term. The 400 rule above helps break down that team chemistry that builds up even with the defaults.

But I'll say it again, I do a regular flip-flop between all the PS2 era PESes, PES 2010-2015 on the PS3 and some PES4 era PES too, and PES 5 has still got it. It's still the best.
I agree too. Pes5 Is my favorite football game, followed very very close by FIFA 16.

I think WE9LE is better than PES5 & PES6. It’s kind of a hybrid of both.

I think WE9LE is better than PES5 & PES6. It’s kind of a hybrid of both.
At first look i had the same opinion, expecially due the fact we9le has a slight better ball physics than pes5 and better goalkeepers.
Keep testing both deeply i changed my opinion, and i consider pes5 better than we9le,cause it is more challenging. A.i Is praised to be better on we9le but i don't agree at all. Expecially if we talk about a.i on Cup mode where Pes5 one is good ( Better than the 2008 One too globally, not as varied on attack but way more lethal respect the exhibition's match pes5 counterpart and better at defending than everything else on ps2) and the we9le One is still the same (dreadful in attacking) that we find in exhibition's matches.
Plus It seems there Is a bug with stars: play with 5 star on we9le provides a better experience. On 6 stars the cpu Is worst at defending, cause it move in a less organic way on the pitch, and it is even worst on attacking.
I didn't find this issue on Pes5,where i find 6 stars overall harder than 5.

It’s probably a matter of preference and our individual play styles. I think PES5 is a fantastic game but I prefer PES6 between the two. I find the referees aren’t as whistle-happy and the shooting is tighter. I find it very easy to score in PES5 (as far as the actual shot goes) however, I agree the AI is probably better on PES5 than PES6. This being said, I am generally torn between the two but I do play more PES6 than PES5 because of convenience with the patches. I’ve got a mini pc hooked up to my TV and a wireless controller. In PES6 I can select the ball, stadium, kits etc just using the controller. On PES5 I’ve got to use a keyboard to do that and it’s a pain in the arse when you just want to kick back and enjoy some football.

I like Pes6 too,even if less than 5. I like all PS2 pes actually...What do you think about We10?

To my knowledge it’s exactly the same gameplay as PES6
Mmh no It Is really a lot different. We10le is the same as Pes6,but we10 is different. In my opinion Is faster (players has no inertia animations) but It has a better a.i. except of goalkeepers.
Ball physics is really different too: something between Pes 5 and Pes6 in my opinion

I find it interesting you find the shooting tighter on PES 6, I feel 9/10 shots fly up over the bar all the time, even when you tap the shoot button. I prefer the passing/shooting physics on 5 personally but you can't go wrong with 6's patches. They have a patch for every tournament/season it seems!

@simogto90 no I think we10 is the same as pes6. It’s the LE versions that are different.

@Marlon Anthony I was exactly the same as you back in the day going from PES5 to PES6 because the shooting is completely different. The shooting in PE6 is more difficult. However, I’ve seen a few people say that about the shots flying over the bar all the time. I’m starting to think it’s the controller people are using. I’m going to guess people are using an Xbox controller. I use a retrobit controller and have never had that issue. Not completely sure it’s the controller or maybe I just know how to shoot having played it on PS2.
Just for test purposes… try using the d-pad instead of the analog stick and let me know if you get the same shooting results.

WE10 came out April 2006, so it's closer to a PES 5.5 than PES 6. Or perhaps what PES 5 would be if it was developed to be like PES 6

PES 6 came out in April 2006 as well. It’s the same game except in WE10 they had a J-Legaue in it I think.
It’s WE9LE that’s different. It was released for Korea and is a hybrid of PES5 & PES6.

True, every PS2 era PES has it's own distinctive feel on the pitch that makes them unique, being so enjoyable overall as you can't go wrong by picking any of them. Very interesting that PES 3 and 5 gameplaywise have some similarities regarding a more "mature" slower tactical pace, then you have PES 4 and 6 that are more explosive during action that can stir a lot of dopamine when you defend or create your attacking chances. Are so great in their own way to an extent that you can pick one or another depending on the personal mood, plus those hundreds of patches: for past decades back from 1930s, national World/European cups from the 80' to date, and all seasonal patches from 90s until 2024... it's just mind blowing !!! That loyalty alone shows how actively supported and loved PES 3-6 are, and how how deep their fans can go to keep those masterpieces alive...

Max Drives are rare enough these days. I still have mine and say with some confidence that FreeMCBoot is miles better.

That 128MB card should do the trick. All the experts on YouTube etc say you're best getting it on an official card but I'm not sure how much is in that. I've no experience with third party cards myself but haven't heard any complaints from those who have!

You'll also need a bog-standard USB stick to transfer files. You can also play games from USB, negating the need for discs, something to think about in terms of capacity.

Anything else, give me a shout. I think there's a good few proficient FreeMCBoot users here too!
Many thanks - I just received the McBoot card. It works on the PS2, I can see the menus and It has a bunch of programmes installed. But I'm a little bit at a loss what to do next. I tried searching but I probably can't see trees for the forest.

How do I install an option file on this now via a USB stick? I'm keen on PES 2008 especially, which I recently got and must say started to instantly fell in love. Is there a guide for this and a recommended Option File? Many thanks!

PES 2008 is great.
I've created an OF for it.
https://evoweb.uk/threads/ps2-psp-pes-2008-juventino-of-v2-j2-league-inside.93848/
Feel free to try it.

I tested a Little more pes5 a.i, and i discovered that the boosted a.i i found on International Cup Is not there if i play a konami Cup. This is really weird. I will test other modes in the next days.

No, there Is not j-league in we10. We10 teams are the same you find in Pes5/we9le.
Pes6 has updated roster. Anyways we10 and Pes6 are really a lot different on the pitch. If you can, try to play again we10. I think that if you like Pes6 this could like you even more. In my opinion we10 is the real Hybrid between Pes5 and pes6

If PES6 came out in April 2006, how would it have gotten the 06/07 season kits?

WE10 never had J.League in it. That was the other version you showed with the Europe League 06-07. The reason I know this is because I have all these games on my phone

Oh i see..This is a we10 special version.
I own the standard version which is called "winning Eleven 10" only and It Is the first Japanese version. I saw a video of this j-league+Europa League version and yes, the gameplay Is the same as Pes6. But the standard we10 version play different. Now i see why we have so different experience about the game

It didn’t. It was released in Japan first in April 2006 like I said.
Then later in 2006 Europe.
I’m not sure the point you’re making, the info is there in your image.

Edit: are you referring specifically to the US release? I’ve got no idea about that version since I’ve never played it.

The season in Europe starts late august so by the time October has arrive for it’s released they would have got that seasons kits.

Ok...

April 2006 - Winning Eleven 10 is released in Japan
October-November 2006 - PES 6 is released in Europe and Australia
November 22 2006 - J.League Winning Eleven 10 + Europe League 06-07 is released
January 18 2007 - Winning Eleven 10 Liveware Evolution is released in Korea Republic
February 2007 - Winning Eleven 2007 released in USA

The PES/Pro Evolution Soccer name has never been used in Japan until 2020 (eFootball PES 2021)

The point I'm making is that PES 6 released in October 2006 at the earliest. Winning Eleven 10 IS NOT PES 6, due to the fact that the gameplay is a bit different and it has different teams (both from lost Bundesliga in PES 6 and promoted/relegated teams). This is in reference to you saying PES 6 came out April 2006, when it didn't

Brilliant, many thanks - even I was able to figure this out and it worked! Also with the simple USB stick as you said before. Fantastic stuff. 🥰

Got the Option File @Juventino32, looks really good with full Premier League. 😀 Must give your 22/23 file geeeeee a spin later as well.

Glad you got it working! Saw your last post and I knew @geeeeee made a great tutorial. Right enough, there he came with it!

As far as playing games via USB goes, let this video, and https://cdromance.com, be your friends!

Nope, this is the j league, as @FC Bayern said it was released near the end of 2006, konami made this games until 2010 where they were called j league we xx but we xx games are way different to this, usually they were the same version but for ntsc tv's we10 was mostly for japan never got a us version, we9 have two version the international version which is the us release, then we9 japan which is NOT j league we9 game, we9 japan many people said is even different from pes5 and we9i, which are the same game basically in fact the ones we have on pc

Going back, j league we10 yes is basically pes6 even faster if you ask me, we10 is pes5.5
