The Retro FIFA Discussion Thread (All FIFA games by EA are welcome!)

The shooting on FIFA 14 is the best in any footy game IMO.

I have it set at 51. For want of a better word, you can really 'twat' long range efforts.

Does anyone know if I can get this on PC (for free, like 16) with updated squads? I'd be interested to have a gander.
You can get it for free, but I'm afraid you need origin version to put in mods.

Great idea for a thread, I considered it but didn't think there was much demand for a Retro Fifa thread so didn't bother, hope I'm proved wrong!

Played some more of FIFA 09 last night, It really is interesting going back & playing these with the mind set of 10 years ago, How people must've reacted to the animations & ball physics. It holds up OK today on the pitch, even though it's still pretty fast on slow.

Visually & aesthetically though, it's an abomination. Everything is so washed out & there's no contest at all, player models & face are of course awful & the match highlights are buggy beyond belief. Obvious highlights are omitted but a loose ball rolling out of play makes the final cut.

So we were a few years away from FIFA's slicker presentation but on the pitch with the camera out as far as possible, you forget about these things. You acclimatise to the controls & mechanics after 1 game & you forget your playing Retro FIFA, Your too busy just playing football.
Fifa 09 is my favourite ever Fifa. IIRC it's the last Fifa before they introduced 360 movement, and therefore decided to remove all inertia between the player and the pitch.

I made a little highlights video of FIFA 13. I knwo FIFA 14 gets a lot more love especially thanks to the Classic Patch, but 13 has some very special qualities too. I found it a touch faster than 14 but also noticed bunch of animations that don't carry over to the sequel for some reason. This is also captured using the very in depth ModdingWay patch for 13.

What are some of your thoughts on this game?

FIFA 13 may be over 10 years old now, but that doesn't stop this being one of the most enjoyable and popular football games ever made. Check out some wonderful goals scored on this classic masterpiece!

I redownloaded this after watching those clips. I have to say it plays very nice. 10 years ago I was 100% PES so I never got to try this.It still holds up well, had some fun games and well honestly it looks like eF25 so no complains about graphics.
Animations look good, too. Will try to compare vs Fifa 14 which I also have installed but haven't played in a while.

vanilla 14 and you'll have fun if edit sliders so passing a touch slower and more error in touch by AI, but if 14 isn't vanilla, it's nowhere close imo

Anyone have any experience of playing old PS2 or GameCube Fifa's on the Anbernic RG556 handheld?

I ask as I've always had an issue with them on my phone/laptop (PCSX2) not working well from 2004 and onwards

So, after many months, I've come to the conclusion FIFA 14, 16 & 17 are the best available in the series.

14 - I love the shooting. I've stated before I have it set at 51 or 52 and bloody hell, I've scored some mental goals. A few made all the better with the fact the 'keeper doesn't even move as it screams past him. The game has a loose feel to it, the ball isn't stuck to your players foot. I also like how the AI will adapt their mentality. I had a game in a career mode I was 4-1 up and cruising and with 20mins left they went for it, scored twice and hit the post in the last min! My only 2 gripes are, lack of fouls & the AI seem reluctant to shoot at times so I've had to lower their accuracy.

16 - I've done 8 seasons on here and enjoyed it but have found I'm missing the shooting 14 provides. I've got shot power on about 54 or 55 for this game. You can still score some rockets but it doesn't feel as good as 14. This game excels in clever AI who are unpredictable and you get a lot of fouls off the AI.

17 - I just find this an all round enjoyable game. I like the tempo but also that I've had plenty of games where it just feels like a Midfield scrap. The biggest gripe is the GKs seem to be super human. I'm left at times thinking, how the hell has he got to that, so lowered GK ability a bit.

I'll probably bounce between 14 & 17 for now, after doing a long stint on 16.

14 seems to be my go to though. No fake teams, Brazilian League licensed, I spent a few hours naming every teams stadium so it's a bit more immersive and I like the fact you don't have to arse about training youth players and stuff, they grow naturally.

The tactics are also great, you have the arrows to assign for attack and defence and this has a set piece creator. I've yet to delve into it, I did make one where all 10 of my outfield players steamed in on the 'keeper. Tried it in a game and I scored direct from the corner 😂 tried it again, they won the 1st header and had a 4 on 1 with my GK which was fun.

I might spend some time later this week and set some up to use.

I also scored a lovely goal with Benteke last night on 14. Slotted a through ball, he took it in his stride, held off the defender but then hit it. It arrowed, on the floor at pace, past the GK but looked and felt so good to score.

Thank god we have these older games. I don't think I'll ever get rid of my PS4, I've even gone out and got back up copies of these 3 titles in case the discs get scratched or damaged. 50p each down CEX, bargain!!

I think 14 on the PS4 is the best it ever got. It’s a shame that PC had an old-gen port, I’m sure it would be the flagship game rather than 16 for modding. 16 is obviously great but slightly janky and quick.

Guys the creators of FIFA Infinity patch have the FIFA 14 in better place than the FIFA 16? Because i think they released FIFA 14 infinity patch but they didn't for FIFA 16...

Which FIFA is the best? Competition for PES? With or without Mods? What can you recommend?

I loved FIFA 11 back in the day, but replaying it, does not convince me to stick to it. Maybe i need to just relearn it.

What do you suggest, regarding FIFA?

"Daddy, how do I know whether momentum is with me or against me in a match?"
"You cannot know for sure, son. But trust me, there will be signs."

Probably a long shot, but they go in sometimes... I don't suppose anyone has some old PSP saves with all third kits unlocked? Looking for FIFA 07, 08 & 11 (07 & 08 Euro version, 11 the US version, but could find a Euro version if required)

Quick question guys..

For vanilla FIFA 17, 18, or 19, if I were to start a Career with a Korean or Japanese team, will the AFC Champions League (or an equivalent Asian Cup for the top clubs) be represented? Thanks in advance..

EDIT: Found the answer. A generic Asian competition is available in FIFA 19! :TU:

For "Semi" passing players (this is an experimental setting):

One issue I've always had with Semi passing (perhaps my favorite setting) in older FIFAs is that ground passes are "semi", but through balls only have the "assisted" or "manual" option. This creates too much of a difference between ground passes and through balls. (this was changed in more recent FIFAs, as through balls have the "semi" option as well).

I think there might be two ways around this:
- Making passes semi, but through passes manual, and then reduce pass error slider from 50 to approximately 40.
- Making passes semi, but through passes assisted, and then increase pass error slider from 50 to 65.

This, IMO, could create a balance in which semi passes are still semi and a kind of "semi through passing" can be created (or at least, in assisted, they aren't so accurate, thus reducing the contrast with semi normal passes). Just tested this on FIFA 17 and it seems to be the case, so wanted to share these settings here.

Of course, this won't work the same for all FIFAs, as gameplays differ, but it could serve as a rough guide for those who might want to experiment with a "semi" through ball assistance in older installments. Not 100% sure it works yet, as I am still experimenting, but still wanted to share this here. :TU:

I’ve played FIFA 16, 14, PES 17, 13, PES 5. The one that still feels fresh, perfectly paced, inertia-based, physics-orientated, realistic and challenging is FIFA 14 on the PS4. Marvel of a game

Went back and played a game on Fifa, an old save, and Fifa 17 is still one of my top 3 Fifa games, still looking amazing and playing very well.
Yeah, it's good, I also wanted to refresh this version, but this small ball that looks like a handball really discourages me. (especially when i run fifa 17 after playing fifa 16 with anths ball physics mod) What is your Fifa top 1;)?

I dont really see the small ball after a while.
Straight out of the box, no mods etc and from a console I'd go
FIFA 15
FIFA 17
FIFA 16
FIFA 19
FIFA 18
Haven't played FIFA 14:enough to put it on the list.
But that list varies a lot, though 15 and 17 is always high up, though I'm playing 19 right now and I'm really liking it
Yours?

I play on PC. Since FIFA 19, I have been playing PES 20/21 for a few years. Half a year ago I returned to FIFA 16 and it is my only football game at the moment. I tried FIFA 17 but due to the small size of the ball I couldn't convince myself. I also recently played FIFA 19 and it's really good, but compared to 16 it's too box to box for me, although the animations, graphics and curved the ball when shooting and crosses are great. 17 and 19 do not exist on the modding scene. Also for me, overall (gameplay + modding content), FIFA 16 is top 1. But I remember that in 2015 I also liked FIFA 15 very much

You should try Krebstar's sliders for FIFA 19. These make the game much less end to end, I play a slight variation of them (with some personal preferences) and I've had tons of fun with it!

I love FIFA 14-19. I believe they are all great games! It's difficult for me to rank them, but I'd probably put 16 at the top of the list. All very enjoyable installments though, and quite susceptible to sliders IMO, which is a great advantage! :TU:

I tried Krebstars sliders. The game was good, but I had the impression that the CPU created few chances, took few shots and didn't score many goals. I had the same experience with FIFA 16 for a long time even with gameplay mods, until I set some of the sliders extremely. So I'll probably must spend more time on it in '19.

I play, with krebstars slider, tweaked them a bit and ultimate difficulty and they play very good, especially on ULT, feel less cheated than on say WC/Leg difficulty.
CPU creates a lot and defending is quite tough, a mistake and you're done
Never really felt the same playing it on WC difficulty which is my normal setting.
