The Retro FIFA Discussion Thread (All FIFA games by EA are welcome!)

I tested again fifa 14 and i stay with my opinion that 16 is better. Raising marking slide to 75-76 fixed a lot CPU reaction to our dribblings.
I really don't like how u can spam l1+triangle on 14,but overall is a really good game

I should try 14 again,so.
I always find 16 better in dribbling and physics, expecially collisions and first touch.
Game Speed is better on 14.
I want test more a.i, cause i found that on 14 through ball are too much effective compared to 16.
But a thing i don't like at all on 16,a.i speaking,is how CPU doesn't react good at players dribbling's attempts. On 16 i can really abuse dribbling too much, even with players that are not that good at it.
Yeh exactly what I found, dribbling is too easy on 16. I think AI are better and more interesting on 14 too. And with through balls, put them on manual or mess with slider pass speed and error.

Yes I should definitely test some sliders on 14... On 16 i messed up a lot to find a sweet spot.

I've been playing FIFA 16 for a month every day. Today i I returned to PES, which I had been playing for recent years and which I was in love with (with gameplay mods). I thought that if I played PES now after a month of break, I would fall in love with it again. And you know what?? It turned out that the gameplay in PES is not as great as I thought. I don't know what the phenomenon of FIFA 16 is. This game has a lot of flaws, it can be frustrating, but there is something about it that makes you want to play "one more match". PES, despite better fluidity, animation, physics and many better technical aspects, lacks this something. I don't know what it is, maybe the spirit of football :)

In my opinion fifa16 has a lot of random moments (a good thing), where everything can happen. There is much more variety and freedom.
I don't know which pes are you talking about, but i own and i can speak for 17, 2020 and 2021: they are too much monodimensional, they lacks in variety, a.i, and physics collisions, and shooting..

Fully agree. I started playing 16 a few weeks ago and the amount of mistakes players make, whether on a pass or in calculating an interception, etc, makes it so that one play is vastly different than the last one. PES21, which I'm now playing, is almost always the same.

You're right, guys, there are a lot of small details in FIFA that create good gameplay. I would also add that in FIFA there is definitely more play in the midfield, fighting, like in a real match. Difficulty appears already in your own half and in the center of the pitch. In PES (2020,FL 23-24), the first obstacle often appears under the opponent's penalty area. Because of this, I have the impression that in FIFA, CM and DM players are more important, as they are often the brains of the team, just like in a real match. For now, I'm infatuated with FIFA 16. When I played it at launch, it didn't seem as good as it is now. I wonder how long this infatuation will last? :)

Guys, Frosty Mod Manager has stopped working for me for some strange reason.. I have the purchased game (FIFA 17) on the EA app (not CPY), and it was working before. Now the game won't even launch through the manager.. Wondering if any of you are experiencing this same issue? Thanks..

Man, I really, really want to buy a PS3/XBOX 360 to play both 2010 and 2014 World Cup games. I tried emulating them but my PC is just under the requirements. Those are such well done games, being to play full qualifiers or being the captain of your national team...
After about 3 years, finally got myself a PS3! Loving the World Cup games :)

Definitely...on new Pes, like 2020 and 2021 is even a lot worse in this regard, midfield positioning is bad.
On 2021, expecially, you can pass the ball directly from you Cb to your forward, mostly of times.
Fifa 16 is a really solid game, one of the best football games ever.

Guys, do any of you know of any FIFA editions have an International Challenge mode (similar to PES 6)?

I want to play a campaign with the Romanian NT, and play European Qualifying all the way to the World Cup. I'd like to know if there are any FIFA titles that include this mode. Thanks. :)

Not WC but Euro 2008 has all qualifying and then Euro 2008, pretty certain World Cup 2010 too.

Fifa 14 World Cup Brazil as well!

If you really feel patient, you could also start careers in regulars Fifa from 13 onwards (iirc when they introduced NT in career) hoping that somebody will offer you Romania just at the beginning :P

Just realised after stupid auto downloads that everytime I was praising Fifa 14, it is vanilla. As I tried it updated and it is terrible updated, they simplified everything and removed many little things. So you guys judging it may want to try vanilla.

Anyway, my Leicester team won promotion to EPL. I was in 2nd and on for auto promotion with 1 game left, but guess who I played last game. Away to 3rd place, West Ham. Only needed a point to go up and I bottled it and lost :)

I then fixed things, and smashed 4th place in playoffs.

Look how competitive it was between top 4, must be record points between top 4 teams ever, was so tense. Especially as I got some long-term injuries to key players, including my star striker Eaves being out for 3 months. Part of why the game is great, you get injuries and very tired players.

Got to semis of FA Cup, but was battered.

Hey mate, how did it download the updates? I'm playing on my PS5 but with the servers off I noticed it didn't update. Mata is still at Chelsea was the sign that it definitely was vanilla.

I'm on PS4 still, but assume PS5 works same way. I have auto downloads etc set to off but the bloody thing still eventually downloads the update and installs it. So now I stay offline.

I deleted and reinstalled fifa 14 to get It at 1.00.
And you are so damn right. 1.00 is really better than 1.06.
Pace,Dribbling, inertia, physicalty is better in 1.00.
Now i like fifa14 more than 16 overall.

Do you have version v1.00 of FIFA 14 for PC? Or just for consoles? Thank you

Noticed there’s some discussion here of modding FIFA on Xbox 360 and I thought I’d share a mod that permanently unlocks the EA catalogue for offline use for 2014 FIFA World Cup.

This game had an in-game catalogue of game items that you could unlock with gameplay (eg. retro shirts, soccer balls etc). However, the unlock process relied on a connection to the EA servers to be able to unlock them, and also to use them afterwards, as even if you had unlocked them before, when your console was offline, you couldn't access the previously unlocked items.

With the EA servers now permanently shut off for this game, there is no way to get these working anymore on a retail Xbox 360 console, however, with a modded locale.big file, you can get these unlocked for offline use on a Xbox 360 that has been modded via RGH/JTAG, or for Xenia emulator on a PC.

These require the use of an extracted ISO version of the game, not the converted GOD version (as with GOD, you don’t have access to change game files).

Simply replace data/loc/locale.big with the modded locale.big provided. This mod should also be Media ID agnostic (i.e. the mod works across all media IDs - let me know if any issues crop up with a particular version of 2014 FIFA World Cup).
Thank you so much !!, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to have all the fc catalogue unlocked, after trying everything I gave up, it was in 2021. However, just the other day I searched for it once more and I found your post, thanks to you this is a reality and not a dream anymore, thank you, I never got the chance to play the world cup when it came out cause I had no money to buy a console, but now I can, and with everything unlocked.
Thank you !!!!

The spirit of football, the presentation, the randomness that is just around the corner, the variety in play and depth that it has. Played 3 games of this last for the first time in years, and it plays a very enjoyable game of football.

Hi,

I have always been a PES player (since ISS Deluxe) but also played a couple of FIFA games.

The ones I enjoyed more are

- FIFA 98 Road to World Cup (PS1)

Impressive selection of national teams and possibility to play the WC qualifiers ; indoor matches ; ...

- FIFA 13 (PS3)

My favourite one on the PS3

Honorable mentions :

- FIFA 99
- FIFA 2000 (first time Belgian clubs were features I think)
- FIFA 2001 on PS1 (RAAL was promoted to D1 and I used to get to the stadium with my uncle and then replayed the match on the PS1 - great personal memories)
- FIFA 16 on PS3, the last one I bought and.played. Mostly to play with Gignac at the Tigres, MLS, ...

The ones I disliked a lot : all PS2 ones and especially the 2002 World Cup edition ahah.

Here's a little highlights package I made of FIFA 17. Been great going abck through this one for the first time in a while. It strikes me how similar this is to FIFA 16 but with the lick of paint in Frostbite. Still baffles me how we went from something so pleasureable to control and play to what we have now with the issues in animations and physics in current FC games.

FIFA 17 combined the parts we know and love from FIFA 16 as well as a new Frostbite engine providing beautiful, realistic graphics. Check out some fun goals scored on this wonderful game!

I know I've said this a lot, and I'm sure many others have said it too, but look at the amazing lighting, the incredible weather effects you can see during the gameplay, the player positioning and the overall impact, all combined with excellent AI awareness! My word! If they sell this game with new rosters, kits and other features alongside each iteration, that's all it would take to convince everyone that they're buying a superior, more realistic product than anything else out there. No need for gimmicks, just football!

Even the FUT guys seem to prefer the gameplay from 14-17 - just one example "what's the best FIFA" thread from the FUT Reddit (see the comments).

Which says to me that even they would prefer more grounded, thoughtful, sim-type gameplay.

But I guess if you're EA and you're looking at usage statistics (i.e. people keep buying it), you can tell yourself they're loving the game.

As opposed to realising you're the only fully-licensed game in town and you've got a license to print money no matter how disliked your gameplay is - but you'd make MORE money if the gameplay was closer to reality.

I just realised I've never played Fifa 17, what's it like? Just been digging in my 'random shit drawer' and found Fifa 16 for Xbox, so am likely going to give that a bash for the first time in years this weekend :D

Well, the biggest problem among those popular and casual FUT players is that they don't directly understand what's missing in current football games, but they know that old FIFAs (like 14-17) were solid. Instead of finding out what's wrong or even trying to understand the real problem, they blame AI defence, DDA and everything else that makes the game even worse, because the developers always listen to them.

This is what you get when you don't identify the real problem, but blame it on the actual football fundamentals and mechanics, which is what they needed all along. Simply put, they don't know what they're doing.
