The Movies Thread

Saving Mr. Banks Whoever has watched or read the story of "Mary Poppins" needs to see this movie. Sometimes Hollywood still has that magical touch and here it is in full glory like at its golden age. Wonderful movie, that enriches both the book and movie of "Mary Poppins". 9.5/10

Totally agree, I loved that movie.

in an other note :

The Grand Budapest Hotel : 8.5/10

for the first time in my life I enjoyed a movie by Wes Anderson.

Mud Interesting coming of age drama with a good acting performance by the main-kid, and Mc Caughney acts not bad either. 8.5/10

This is England: 8.5/10 - Very enjoyable indeed, good film. I see there's a couple of mini series came off it, so will watch them too.

Isn´t this from 2006? Have seen the Movie and was very positive surprised, good movie and worth to watch it.

Raid 2 Raid 1 was imho an awesome indonesian actionflick, that was then sort of remade in form of "Dredd". So I was excited to see "Raid 2". Despite having read that "Raid 2" would play merely hours after "Raid 1", it has nearly nothing to do with the first part storywise.
Instead now it got turned into a sort of Mafia-movie ala Goodfellas. Problem is only "Goodfellas" is miles better, the writing is just not on that level, the actors are not really good to carry such a story. And the karate-action doesn't really mesh well with the mafia-story. Most of the time I asked myself why the gangsters don't pull out their guns and shoot, but they all are content to go hand in hand.

And even the hand to hand action is not as energetic and awesome as in part 1. The success of part 1 was in having it all concentrated within a big building, that sort of thrill is gone. Instead it's opened up, where you see action in a prison, on the street... they even tried to copy the "Matrix Reloaded"-highway-action-piece.

While I would give "Raid 1" 8/10, "Raid 2" gets 6/10.

I recently saw 21 jump street so it was fresh in my mind when I saw 22. Both really funny, a couple of scenes in 22 had the entire crowd crying with laughter.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes 9/10.

Thought the first film was pretty crap, but this was such a strong sequel. Incredible CGI, great story, great tension, and great acting. First time I saw people clap at a cinema in the UK!!!

Also thought the first one was pretty awful despite all the good critics it got.

For me "Planet of the apes" with Charleton Heston from 1968 is still the best, by far!

But I'm curious how the new one plays out.

Yeah probably is from then, good movie.

Planet of the Apes - I enjoyed the first film. Quite fancy catching this second one at the flicks, same with Transformers.

Watched:-

X-Men: Days of Future Past - 7/10. Not really upto much I thought, lacked action and possibly over-generous with the 7. Have liked the previous ones, but this one didn't grab me as much.

Captain American 2 - 7.5/10. Quite good, enjoyed the first one, but this was slightly less appealing, obviously interesting to see how/if they develop the Winter Soldier story.

Her - 5/10. Just clicked on best movies of 2013 (I think it was) and this came up, quite like Joaquin Phoenix. It started off okay, but got too weird for me and in the end it went from promising to poor pretty quickly.

They changed director and script for this sequel, which is probably why I like this one so much more.

Watched Elysium.

7/10 - Was okay, nothing special. Copley's even more pumped up South African accent was annoying, LOL.

Saving Mr Banks.

What a movie, 10/10.

Can't believe Emma Thompson never took Oscar for this, how she wasn't even nominated is laughable and makes the Oscars a sham, for crying out loud, Sandra Bullock got one for fannying around in a spacesuit for an hour and a half, or was it for her 20 second strip.

How the likes of Gravity and American Hustle got in before this is a joke, although I'm presuming it's the 'Disney' effect.

Top Gun (BD) 7/10

I don't see what the fuss is about.

The world's end Interesting first 20-30 minutes. Mid-fourties trying to regain some of the youthful spirit by trying to complete a beer-pub run they hadn't completed when they were young. It had potential, it could have been used as a vehicle to bring up old hidden conflicts between the friends, flashbacks from the youth revealing a more complex past, with different memories, in short it could have been translated into a transforming experience.

But instead after these 20 minutes that had potential, robots came up and it all became a big catastrophic, awful movie. I'm not against robots, I'm not against comedy or even slapstick, but in this movie it was all ridiculous and lame and imho completely misinstrumentalised. The topic of zombies was used in a much better way in "Shaun of the dead", than the topic of alien robots in this one.

Complete waste of time. "Shawn of the dead" gets 8.5/10 from me. "World's end" gets 4/10.

Captain America: The winter soldier What should I say? One of the best marvel-movies to date (only xmen 2 is still better imho). Great flick, awesome action-scenes, good story. 8.5/10

BTW, by saying Marvel movie, I excluded X-Men & Spider-Man franchises, because they're produced by Fox & Sony respectively.
if we talk about best Marvel Comics-based movies, then X-Men First Class is the best ever.

Red 2 - 4/10

Pointless sequel, the first film is much better.

Hello I Must Be Going - 6/10

OK film.

The Bourne Legacy - 4/10

A good cast let down by a bad script with poor direction from Tony Gilroy. An awful film that is also too long.

Leave it alone Universal.

Guardians of the Galaxy - 8.5/10

Really enjoyed it, not hugely into marvel in all honesty but this is worth seeing for sure.
