The Movies Thread

As far as I remember "The Desolation of Smaug" starts with some kind of flashbback showing Thorin meeting Gandalf the first time.

After that flashback the movie continues the chase of Thorin and his company by Azog and his Orcs, right after Thorin and his fellowship was rescued by Gandalf and the giant eagles.

It is the same storyline that is continued, but not exactly the same last hour like in the first movie.

But I have to say, if you have seen LOTR before, everything seems and looks familiar. You have orcs & a special orc leader, wargs, giant spders, hobbits, dwarfs, elbs, gollum / smeagol, gandalf, bilbo, frodo, saruman, elrond, galadriel, legolas, radagast & THE RING... :D

So, nothing really new and special....
But wait, there is at least something new: the dragon SMAUG. ;)
And of course the most important thing: HFR 3D.... :D :D

Thanks for the explanation.
It felt like when I watched 'Smaug' the other week I'd seen it all before for the first hour!
It wasn't until the dragon appeared, it seemed like another movie

Watched The Lone Ranger.

I actually really enjoyed it.

Bit crazy, but I did find it funny and enjoyed it. Was a bit more bloody than I thought it would be coming from Disney.

7.5/10

Gravity.

Not overly impressed.

I'll give it a 7/10, although Sandra Bullock stripping down has probably helped that score.

The Big Lebowski - 8/10

The plot is not really linear and I tried hard to follow the story, but I could not stop laughing with Bridges and especially Goodman! And those dream sequences were perfectly made.

I love and adore "Big Lebowski", for me it's a one of a kind-movie and gets a 10/10.

Just thinking about the movie makes me smile.:APPLAUD:

Watched Snowpiercer the other day: Not perfect, but nice idea, with some food for thought and with some memorable scenes. Like it, but could have been better. 8/10

Wolf of Wall Street 8/10/. Very funny.

Captain America 6.5/10. Better than I expected. Fight Choreography was good. Death of Captain America for part 3?

Watched 12 Years a Slave.

If I never watch another movie, I'll be so glad I saw this.

One of the easiest 10/10 I could give.

"Wolf of wall street" : Wow, that was a lame movie, I expected way more, especially from a master-director like Scorsese.
The whole first half, while at times funny and entertaining, was devoid of any good story-telling. And the second half while certainly better didn't have enough punch.

As a wall-street-movie it failed imho miserably, "Wall Street " (1987) was imho much better, as a con-movie "Catch me if you can" (2002) was imho much better.

"Taxi Driver", "Raging Bull" and "Goodfellas", those are Scorseses' masterpieces, "Wolf of wallstreet" felt more like a lamb of wall street. 5/10

Riddick - 6/10: I liked Pitch Black, Chronicles was not bad, but not really too much into this one, too my cheese involved. I thought Riddick was a cool hero, but losing the appeal now.

Silent Hill 2 - 5/10: The first one I quite enjoyed, but this one failed to deliver for me, spotted John Snow thought, hehe.

The Big Lebowski - 8/10: Good, enjoyed it, not a classic though for me.

Spider-Man 2: 6/10 like the first one with a bit more action.

Robocop 3/10: An absolute dud. The worst action movie I have seen in quite some time.

Xmen Days of Future Past - ...

I'm torn on this film, can't decide whether I like it or not.

Bank job Oooh a Jason Statham movie and yet it is pretty awesome, how can that be? This heist-movie is imho really well made, with some interesting subplots interwoven. Recommended.8.5/10

Looper - 8.5/10

Way better than I expected. A solid story and not-so-exaggerated SFX are rare in Sci-Fi.

The Campaign - 7.5/10

Just fine, I had some laughs with it. Nothing amazing, but pretty good.

Star Trek Live in Concert (Royal Albert Hall) - 11/10.

Amazing experience, I hope Michael Giacchino comes back again soon.

Godzilla 5/10

prepeare for a romantic part inside the movie, totally unnecessary...

I really loved Godzilla. I'm a fan of the build up, SFX and music/score.

I've been a huge fan of Godzilla since growing up, and have watched most of the Japanese films from the 80s, 90s and 00's.

I thought this was a true homage to those original films.

I really felt that Godzilla had some flaws, but was a well-made film. When you see films like Transformers or Spiderman, they're good blockbusters, but they don't feel 'well-made' like Godzilla.

In Bruges - 8.5/10

Really liked the setting and the way they combined humour with drama.

"Veronica mars" (2014) I love Veronica Mars season 1 and season 2 and so I was excited to hear that a movie was made using kickstarter to fund it. I've seen it and although it doesn't match season 1's brilliance (how could it in a timeframe of a movie?), it's imho a great fanservice-experience.

But on its own though without having seen season 1 and 2, the movie is only mediocre, cause the viewer would lack any connection to the main characters.

So I give two ratings:

6/10 (for those who haven't watched Veronica Mars in season 1/2 before).

8.5/10 for those who have seen season 1/2 before.

Edge of Tomorrow - 7.5/10

Pretty good film.

Bad Neighbours - 5/10

Started Ok but then falls apart, the editing was too loose.

Amazing Spiderman 2: 6.5/10 - Was alright, but just the same old stuff really, with a different bad guy and another Green Goblin.

This is England: 8.5/10 - Very enjoyable indeed, good film. I see there's a couple of mini series came off it, so will watch them too.

Kick Ass 2: 8/10 - Funny and good film.

Saving Mr. Banks Whoever has watched or read the story of "Mary Poppins" needs to see this movie. Sometimes Hollywood still has that magical touch and here it is in full glory like at its golden age. Wonderful movie, that enriches both the book and movie of "Mary Poppins". 9.5/10
