The Movies Thread

Maleficent It's a fairy tale about the "Sleeping beauty", but what made this different was how the "evil" witch got a backstory and depth. I really liked that aspect and it was played well by Angelina Jolie.
But the question comes up why after cursing the baby, Maleficent decides to watch over the child till she's 16?

The other problem I had with the story was the ending:

They wanted to make a twist-ending in which the kiss of the prince isn't one of true love and fails to awaken the sleeping beauty, but then instead the kiss of Maleficent wakes up the girl. That twist I actually liked despite the "feminist"-ideology behind it, as it made sense plot wise.

But then the big end fight gets ongoing during which the king, the father of the sleeping beauty, dies. Why was that necessary? If I had made the movie I would have made the awakening of the sleeping beauty the decisive moment to bring a change in the king's thinking and action towards Maleficient. The moment the father sees his daughter alive again, and the moment she brings the wings back to Maleficient should have been the revelatory moment in which the king remembers the time he spent with Maleficient as a child and the moment he comes to his senses again.

But that moment was ignored and the fight just continued until he king died.

And then the sleeping beauty is shown visiting the fairy-land and she's happy and laughing (her father just died!) and then out of nowhere the prince whose kiss didn't wake her up stands there grinning like an idiot.

Verdict: A pretty good fairy-tale-movie with an "evil" character that has depth and a backstory, but which was unfortunately dragged down by the botched up ending. 7/10

TMNT = 2/10 (if you're 39 years, old like me)
TMNT = 7/10 (if you're 11 or under, like my son)

2 score for Megan Fox looking fine
Movie, shite.

Hercules Didn't expect anything, but it surprised me a bit. It has the problem that the mythical atmosphere of the original Hercules-movies is not here, it's now more post-modern, agnostic. But once one accepts that lack of feeling, there is a good movie here to enjoy.

The CGI at the end of the movie didn't look as convincing as I wished it to be, though. 7.5/10

For me the Rating would be 5.5/10.
It is nothing special and the story with its twists have been seen a lot of times.
For me it is an average and very predictable movie i will forget very quickly.

Really? I have seen lots of movies, but I can't remember a movie with a similar twist:

I mean the twist that Hercules realized eventually that he trained the wrong side and that he was fed lies...

Just asking which movies you reference here.

well thats a bit ovverreactiong imo but its really, really a fun ride. a must see ofcourse, really liked the plot, effects are great and lets admit it everyone can relate more to half-bad, half-good heroes than pure heroes, on the other hand dunno if it was because the music but it was a bit of a timetravel even though it was a sci-fi, dont know like a movie from the 90's, 80's ...a really really cool looking movie from those age :D

well a twist isnt making a movie good. fun was that all the myths were explained and the story was kinda standing with 2 feet on the ground but in the meantime i wanted to see The Rock killing mythical creatures in epic cheasy way xDD so i was a bit dissapointed

Ok, not the specific issue that someone trained the wrong sinde, but it is a twist about being betrayed several times and fighting against those betrayers in the end.

For me it was just a solid and nearly average film.
What I liked on this movie was the aspect that Hercules was not shown as a half god - I was expecting something different, so that was a positive surprise. I have seen worse movies but also a lot of better ones ;)

Agreed, Hercules is not a great movie, nothing that would be remembered over the years, but for me it was an enjoyable little movie, seen worse ones this year, and seen some better.

The other guys When I first saw it years ago, I wasn't much in favour of it, but the other day I saw it as a rerun on TV-broadcast and I laughed really hard. It seems to have grown over the years, or the contemporary comedies got worse that this one shines through. Regardless, I recommend it. 7.5/10

Nice trailer. The new star wars trailer is out as well. The force awakens or some shit like that

in the JP trailer the cgi looks really poor in this age atm but the new SW trailer looked like a fan trailer for me rather than a hollywood blockbuster trailer

so im just hoping. gonna see both anyways since these are my childhood

Ya, Stars Wars trailer was rather underwhelming. Expected a bit more. JP looks like the same old story (Dinosaur escapes and kills people). I don`t expect a talking dinosaur...just something new.

The Equalizer Well produced movie with a Denzel Washington that carries the movie with his charisma. But the story is imho pretty mediocre and not interesting enough. And it's a bit incredulous how Denzel walks through russian gangsters without having to worry that they would shoot them from more than an armlenght's distance. And the gangsters in the finale are a quite a bit stupid:
They took hostages among the friends of Denzel, but then they don't use them to force Denzel to give up, instead they go after him one by one, so he can take them out one by one.

I think Taken 1 was better than this movie, but this one is better than the awful Taken 2. 6/10

Snow White and the huntsman I had high hopes for this one when it came on TV, but I was disapointed. The biggest failure is to have put in "Kristen Stewart" as Snow White. First of all she isn't pretty at all, Charlize Theron looks 10 times as beautiful, so the whole point of the movie was made ad absurdum.

Then she doesn't know how to act at all, there was not a single emotion coming out of her face throughout the whole movie, just a blank stare. What on earth did the casting-people smoke to think she could carry a movie?

It's not all bad, the visuals looked nice, Chris Hemsworth as the huntsman was good, Charlize Theron was ok, although a bit underdeveloped as a character, and the dwarfes were played by some really good actors.

But all that falls flat because Stewart is plain awful. And the plot is also pretty bad.

Why did the witch keep Snowwhite alive for years? Why was there no proper satisfactory ending? Why did Snow White become Joanne d'arc, and why didn't she commit to any of the two candidates that were in love with her?

4/10.

The Interview

is worst than This Is The End and that was some mess, only the Hungarian dub made it decent. the movie is just...boring, starts well but nothing more, predictable, no original jokes etc. dont waste your money

Hobbit battle of the five armies: 5/10. More of the same old tired bullshit.
Gone Girl: 8/10. Good film that had me guessing.

Gone Girl : 8/10
Brillant, like always with Fincher, but I was hoping for another ending (I don't read the book).

The Interview : 4/10
Don't waste your time

Yes, Gone Girl was an excellent thriller. Kept me guessing right till the end which I love in films

The Hobbit is such a tired formula now. I turned it off after 30 minutes.

Has anyone watched Fury? I started to watch but struggled to maintain any interest after only 20 minutes? Is it worth sticking with?

Fury is good. The story and characters don`t get really interesting until the 45th or 46th minute though. Movie had a great finish. 7.5/10

Gone Girl It was well produced, well made and well acted and it had some nice commentary on the topics of marriage and how media is able to control the mind of the masses, but unfortunately the main-plot is so ridiculous and unbelievable and full of plot-holes. And the end is just a big "WTF?!!"-moment.

It's not a complete loss because of the comment on marriage and media-control and the great production (acting, editing...), but the plot-problems reduce the enjoyment for me. 6.5/10

Being off sick has left me with plenty of movie time.

The Drop: 7/10: Tom Hardy and his antagonist in the film were class. Shiddy way for Gando to go out though.

American Sniper 7.5/10: Good, but not as good as ppl were saying. Felt there was something missing.

Foxcatcher: 8.5/10: Great movie. Outstanding job by Steve Carell playing Jean Dupont.
