AS VOLPE QUITS, AXE HOVERS FOR VALVERDE

news14.jpg

Boca Juniors coach resigns following 2-1 defeat by Estudiantes.

"These things happen in football," La Volpe said. "We didn't achieve what we had set out to. We got to this final but I have to present my resignation because we didn't reach our target."

Whilst the tough talking moustached Mexican has expressed no desire to manage in Spain, the growing concern amongst Balague and his directors as to the team's fortunes can't be denied.

A more authoritarian approach bordering on the dictatorial, would certainly go down well with some of the club's older fans, fed up as they are with the perceived 'Playboy' lifestyle of the modern Iberian footballer.

La Volpe would undoubtedly become a prime candidate for the vacant position should Valverde be given his marching orders. With the obvious lack of any language barrier a further advantage.

Ivanov Hails Cup Win

350w4ti.jpg

Dmitri Ivanov

Liechtenstein minnows, FC Vaduz, have progressed to the Division 1 Cup quarter-finals, after beating Denmark's FC København 3-1 on aggregate. A 2-0 first leg away victory saw the principality side gain a shock, yet strong foothold in the the tie. However, Martin Bernburg's howitzer, eleven minutes into the second leg, signalled the Danes' intent and put them back in contention. Any hopes of a comeback were quashed in the second half, however, when Vaduz's Brazilan striker Jaja executed a sublime left-footed curler, passed the static Jesper Christiansen, equalising the tie.

Vaduz keeper, Dmitri Ivanov, now believes his team can progress even further, despite having to face Feyenoord in the next round. "We've shown that we can get results away from home this season and spirits are high in the dressing room at the moment. I don't think there is anything this team can't achieve on our day" said the Russian. "We 're all taking the cup as seriously as survival. Who knows, if we get to the final, we could make Europe and that would be a great achievement for this club." he added.

Re: The PES6 Master League Thread

Tough season for you Db...hope you can win against Ossasuna since the Basque teams bring you luck.

Prof, my first ML in PES5 was with clubs from the "lesser countries" and i absolutely loved it...approximately the same countries as your ML...

"...YOU HAVE 3 GAMES TO SAVE YOUR JOB"

news15.jpg

Those were the 8 crucial words that met Ernesto Valverde when he met Guillem Balague and the Espanyol board at 12pm CET.

A home game against Real Betis followed by a visit to the Balearics to take on Mallorca are clearly the H’orderves, before the main course of Real Madrid visit the Olympic Stadium.

It is not known exactly what points haul will be necessary to keep the current incumbent in his job, but it is probably a given that a win and a draw has to be the bare minimum.

With the pressure now ramped up to such a stifling level, it really would take a herculean effort for the so far uninspired and underachieving squad to record a victory.

This is something that Balague almost certainly realises, and the cynical football fan could be forgiven for thinking this time will be spent searching for an immediate replacement with the manager's position virtually untenable.

Re: The PES6 Master League Thread

hi proff,

hmm that's a good point. perhaps he won't go that far but a 4-4-2rather than the ingrained 4-2-3-1 could be the way forward against weaker sides.

Watch this space....

Re: The PES6 Master League Thread

Lots of comings and goings in Bergamo during past summer:

Transfers out:
Vieri (Olympique Lyon)
Zampagna (Zaragoza)
Bernardini (Leverkusen)
Bombardini (Empoli)
Donati (Schalke 04)

Transfers in:
Kerzhakov (???)
Almiron (Empoli)
Corvia (???)
Nuri Sahin (Borussia Dortmund)
Oscar (Zaragoza)

4 players over 30 left.
The bid for Donati was very good.

The replacements are well under 30 all of them.

Expectations for the new season are not very high. This has to be a season in transition.

Atalanta are in an impossible qualifying group for the CL: Werder Bremen - Man Utd - Real Madrid.

Fiorentina - Atalanta 0-0

Werder Bremen - Atalanta 1-2
22th Oscar
47th Oscar
78th Klose

Re: The PES6 Master League Thread

Some very good buys there Stan, I would say they have improved the overall quality of your squad.
I particularly like Almiron, he reminds me a lot of Veron with the way he plays, Kerzhakov and Sahin are the other two that should lift your team to the next level given time.

I see Oscar is already in the goals for his new club:) What position do you play him?

Re: The PES6 Master League Thread

Hey guy's, sounds like you are having fun. I've not bothered with the master league in pes5 , WE10 or PES6 cos i found it a bit of a long slog, and also thought the ai opponents were pretty weak, even on six stars. Can you convince me it's worth it this time? Do different teams play with differing styles? My interest is piqued from reading prof and denirobobs posts!

Re: The PES6 Master League Thread

I play Oscar as an attack minder side midfielder..

My team:

GK: Calderoni
LSB: Adriano (or Bellini)
RSB: Rivalta
CB: Carrozieri
CB: Loria

CMF: Almiron (or Migliaccio)
CMF: Nuri Sahin
SMF: Oscar
SMF: Selaya

FW: Kerzahakov
FW: Ventola or Corvia

I play both SMF's more offensively than both CMF's.

Quarter-Final Cup Sorrow For FCV

2zp35f6.jpg

Down & Out: Jaric shows his frustration

FC Vaduz were dumped out of the Zentral Liga Cup at the quarter-final stages last night, despite a spirited comeback from the Liechtensteiners. The first leg saw FCV lose 3-1 to Feyenoord in Holland, where Dante López's away goal gave the visitors a glimmer of hope.

Indeed, the return leg in Vaduz saw the home side take a swift 2-0 lead into the half-time break. At this point FCV were going through on the away goal rule. However, Feyenoord came out in the second half with renewed vigour and proceeded to create opportunities, restricting the home side to their own half. Eventually, Charisteas headed in a goal from a corner for the Dutch side, forcing FCV to search for another themselves. In doing so, they left themselves open at the back and Feyenoord netted twice more, putting the result beyond doubt.
Despite the defeat, the the 950-strong crowd at the Rheipark Stadion applauded the home side as they left the field.

QF 1st leg: FEY 3 - 1 FCV
QF 2nd leg: FCV 2 - 3 FEY

AGG: FEY 6 - 3 FCV

Re: The PES6 Master League Thread

What a shame for Vaduz and the 950-strong crowd...
Do you play in the national stadium prof????
I've already mentioned that i've read "Stamping grounds" about Liechtenstein's national teams qualifiers for the 1998 WC...
The national stadium is right neir the border with Switzerland (or is it Austria, i'm not sure...i think it's Switzerland) and when shots miss the goal sometimes the ball croisses the Swiss border...

Re: The PES6 Master League Thread

I'm using the smallest stadium as the Rheinpark, gerd. I'd like to assign the training ground, but you can't unfortunately. It has a nice alpine back drop.

I got "Stamping Grounds" the other day and intend on reading it soon :)

PS it's 2002 ;)

Re: The PES6 Master League Thread

It's one of the most enjoyable football books i've read...apart from maybe the first pages (read on until he's in Liechtenstein, from then on it's a well written, pacey, funny and interesting book).

After reading that book i have genuine admiration for football "minnows". Every spoiled star should train a week with the Liechtenstein national team...I also go looking for their results after every qualification round...and if they were in PES6 i would certainly attempt an International Challenge with them (but we all know they will never be in the game).

If they would be in the same group as Belgium i would go to the match and i think i would support them (the way our national team is playing lately Liechtenstein could win that match).

Re: The PES6 Master League Thread

Well, you'd hope that one day Nokami would finally add lots of missing international teams, including those from European qualifiers. It would be nice to see the likes of Faroe Islands, Iceland, San Marino, Azerbaijan, FYR Macedonia etc

Absolutely agree, Gerd, I thoroughly enjoyed it too. I like Charlie Connelly's style of writing, for the reasons you gave.

Re: The PES6 Master League Thread

Completely off-topic now (i'm sorry, but not too much): did Conelly write other books??? For some reason the name rings a bell..

Re: The PES6 Master League Thread

I've only read two of his football related books but I'm sure I saw one he had written about the shipping forecast reviewed quite recently

I read that as well, enjoyed it too.

Charlie's other football books, none of which I've read yet, include one about Charlton Athletic (his team), one about grass-roots football in London and one about a journey through Europe. The latter sounds good but seems hard to get hold of.

Re: The PES6 Master League Thread

I have the journey through european football book that you mentioned. It is some years since I read it but I remember it being a good read although because he goes to lots of different places and dedicates a chapter to each, it maybe lacks the depth of Stamping Grounds.

Apologies for going off-topic and turning the ML thread into a book club;)
although I get the feeling if most of us listed all the football related books we have read our lists would be very similar:)

Re: The PES6 Master League Thread

Let's try Jeff...

Some of the best i've read (apart from Stamping grounds that is):

The Miracle of Castel di Sangro (must be the very best) by Joe MC Ginnis (i think)
The beautiful game (by David Conn)
A season with Verona (by Tim Parks)
1974, Wij waren de besten (English translation: 1974, we were the best - a book about the 1974 WC and the Dutch team in that tournament).
How football can save the world (by an American guy called Foer or something)

And then there is a book that i'm searching for a quite a long time now, a book about the English-Argentinian rivalry in football (i guess you all now i love Argentinian football).

Oh and on topic...

Livorno - Atalanta 3-3

3th Kerzhakov 0-1
28th Lucarelli 1-1
38th Bakayoko 2-1
64th Kerzhakov 2-2
78th Nuri Sahin 2-3
84th Donovan 3-3

Motm: Bakayoko.

Re: The PES6 Master League Thread

The Miracle of Castel di Sangro (must be the very best) by Joe MC Ginnis (i think)
A season with Verona (by Tim Parks)
I have read those too. I think the Tim Parks one is my favourite football book of all.

I also enjoyed (amongst others) Brilliant Orange by David Winner, about the Dutch and their mentality towards football.

Re: The PES6 Master League Thread

Great - slightly off topic but still enjoyable topic chaps!....

My contributions...

Football Against the Enemy by Simon Kuper
Morbo by Phil Ball
Defending the Honour of Jiev by Andy Dougan
The Football grounds of Great Britain by Simon Inglis
Futebol: The Brazilian way of life by Alex Bellos

Re: The PES6 Master League Thread

I finished "Football Against the Enemy" by Simon Kuper recently. An excellent book by a journalist travelling around the world to watch football matches and study how it's viewed in relation to the politics of where he is.

I also second "Brilliant Orange". Whipped through that in about a day and a half.

And lastly, Gianluca Vialli's book on the footballing differences between England and Italy. I forget the title.

Re: The PES6 Master League Thread

Did anyone here (in the UK) see that programme on the Beeb, i think, about football and its fans around the world? I particularly remember the guy going to Belgrade. It wasn't long ago. I can't remember the name of it.
