The General PC Questions Thread

Has anyone experianced any problems with connecting wirelessly to a router through Windows 7?

Got a new computer today with wireless built in and it seems to be able to get all the wireless signals around my area except my own.

Good shout

Does anyone know what to look out for when buying a new Power Supply ?. Obviously it will have to be the same voltage as my current one, but does it also depend on mother board types aswell ?

Thanks

Yeah, the connectors. My one went earlier this year (would randomly shutdown, not start) so I went and got another one of a similar wattage. However, seeing as my pc is a bit old (6 years now) most of the power connections were those white plastic with 4 pins. And I had used nearly all of them (cdburner, dvdburner, dvdrom, 4 harddisks). However I didn't realise that they now have different ones (black with more connectors) so I ended up having to ditch the cdburner and dvdrom. Hardly ever used them anyway so it didn't matter, but it's worth checking to make sure.

:((

I have Windows 7 on my netbook and have no problems with the wireless config on it. Picked up my wireless network fine and works fine on it.

Hi Gareth, I had a similar problem. It might have something to do with your security setting for the router. Log in to your router config page, check the security type for your wireless connect (WPA2;AES;PSK) for example. Then go to your wireless SSN's Properties and make sure you select the same security settings. This worked for me. Hope this helps.:BYE:

It's looking like my only hope, that or a new one I keep losing my HD, I thought it was a HD problem but my new one is the same. Everyone I spoke to says don't flash it as it can kill your PC but I don't have achoice me thinks...

ooer misses, that's a bit of a personal question isn't it?!

Well I did, but I got put in a cell overnight.

:JAY::P

It shouldn't be scary, most geeks will have done it numerous times without a problem (I have anyway). Just follow whatever instructions your motherboard manufacturer gives you and make sure it's the right file for your motherboard.

You shouldn't have a problem unless you're unlucky enough to lose the power during the flashing process.

flashing the bios these days isn't scary

you can get utilities from your motherboards website, they usually go on a usb stick and you can boot off the usb stick and get to the flash menu

some motherboards havea utility built in and you can access it by pressing a certain key on boot up aslong as it is enabled in the bios

you can also flash from windows with some motherboards / asus for example but i wouldn't do it from there..

if you need help post back someome will help

Updates the motherboard. If your PC doesn't recognise a new CPU, for example, the motherboard manufacturer can release an update that you flash to your BIOS so it does. It's also used to fix bugs with hardware, improve stability etc.

In Nick's case it will probably result in his microwave blowing up.

:SHHH:
Don't mention the "MW" it's the longest it's lasted :P

It has helped but my chip fan is dead so I have ordered a Zalman NB47, I just need Windows 7 Home Premium full now, any ideas on where will do it under £80?...

Guys, I need an advice..
My motherboard refuses to work properly since last monday (it continuously shows artifacts during POST and won't eventually get past it). I've already tried a different PSU as well as different RAM modules and a different video card, but I didn't solve it.
Seeing that the fan on the chipset is performing bad, I'm quite sure it's a chip failure and not a CPU one..

I've tried to look for another A8N-E (the one that I currently have) but it looks like buying another one of those will be a little too expensive, considering that I plan to replace the current PC in a few months anyway (but not now, unfortunately)..

So, can someone of you please give me an advice about a good (maybe even cheap) socket 939 motherboard that supports dual channel DDR 400 memories, PCI-e and SATA RAID (this latter feature is the least important: I already managed to recover the important data from the stripe thanks to my boss' PC that has the same motherboard, so even if I can't use RAID 0 anymore, I'll survive)?

Thanks in advance..

have you tried resetting the bios. there is a jumper on the motherboard which resets it to factory, or you can remove the battery for a few mins

also check your temps in the hardware monitor of the bios see if it is hot...

also boot with the minimum

i.e if you have two sticks of ram, use one.. if you have 2 hardrives, use 1 etc

see what happens...

what error you getting on P.O.S.T?

you can also set them to have a longer post by setting quick post to disabled/no

this may present you with more specific errors

Thank you for the tips ;)

have you tried resetting the bios
Done.

also check your temps in the hardware monitor of the bios see if it is hot
They look normal, the only value that sometimes isn't in the range is the chip fan speed (it sometimes stays around 800-1000 RPM which is too low, that's why I suppose it's a chip failure, maybe it got "fried" because of the bad fan)

also boot with the minimum
I'm not sure if I get what you mean, but I removed both the optical units (so IDE0 and IDE1) and the e-sata disc (which was plugged in a sata port) leaving only the RAID0 stripe. I've also removed all the USB peripherals. I also tried booting with a stick of RAM at a time (and even tried a completely different one to be sure) but it didn't load anyway =(

what error you getting on P.O.S.T?
Nothing specific: when it lists the devices, it freezes and starts producing misplaced characters and artifacts instead of letters. I've tried waiting for more or less half an hour in that situation, but it didn't boot eventually. I've also tried a different video board but it behaves the same.
I've also tried a different PSU and I didn't solve it, plus I've tried my stripe on my boss' old PC and it booted perfectly, so it's not a HDD failure either.

So, that's why I asked if anyone knowed a cheap replacement of my MoBo =)

is there a setting in the bios which could be slowing it down, smartfan?

also you can use a program called speedfan http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php prob no good in this situation when you can't even boot tho

could be your chipset, have you booting with quick post disabled so it takes more time counting the memory and go through the boot up

have you got virus protection enabled in the bios?

it might be worth flashing the bios and seeing if that helps, you have nothing to lose and that is what i would do.

anybody good at creating vectors out of jpg files? need something redrawn but have no idea how to (never used illustrator...)

It's too late.. While testing a couple of things more, the screen turned to complete black and now even the POST is no longer shown, and I can no longer access the BIOS (I tried everything again: another video board, other RAM, and so on before declaring it eventually dead)..

Farewell to my glorious motherboard (I've read of several people having my same problem with chipset fan > :FAIL:)..
Too bad because it was a hell of a motherboard, quality wise..

Now I'm planning about upgrading to an AM3 socket + DDR3 memories:
I don't need the exxagerate power of the i7 CPUs (consider that my Athlon X2 system lasted me 4 years and was serving perfectly until last week) and, being the choice between an i5 and a Phenom II, the AM3 socket offers me the chance to eventually upgrade only the CPU in a future time if needed (AMD sockets tend to last longer than intel ones)..

I really appreciated your help anyway.. THANK YOU!!
