The General PC Questions Thread

i've got that modem. Just wire the ethernet/LAN cable to a router (I've got a belkin)and then you can connect anything else onto the router however you need to, either wireless or with another cable.

If nobody in the UK can make you a better offer Coopz I'll send her this:

Just stuck it in the basement as my ISP sent me a new cable modem/wireless router when I upgraded to 100mb. Has a UK plug as it's from my Singapore ISP, 4 ethernet ports and of course it's wireless as well, served us well for 3 years :)

Ah that's cool then because i have a spare router i could use. What about the password settings inside the router though will these need to be changed?

Just buy an 8 port switch?

I got mine off Ebay for £25 + delivery as the manufacturer only delivers to the UK I believe.

For me a keyboard's a keyboard, just got this one: http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Keyboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ProductID=2058 I liked that it had a USB slot built in plus audio/mic slots built in, easier to plug something there than rooting around the back of the PC :) was only a tenner, comes with a mouse as well :)

Cheers Placebo Ill think about that, still swaying towards a tracker ball though!

I have my new RAM in now and it appears to be working fine, I did a test, I opened a folder from my external drive without the new RAM and it took 7 SECONDS! the folder pops up instantly now with the new RAM so thanks for helping me out on that.

Slow folder opening could also be due to your antivirus program ;)

Iv just had a strange encounter with my PC. I left it on over night and came to it this morning and I beleive it was the fan making a strange noise. So I shut it down, turned it back on again and the noise had gone. However this time it was making a strange clicking noise, round about every 3 seconds. Again I shut it down took a look inside and I noticed a red light next to where the main power socket is plugged in. I unplugged this gave it a blow put it back, then turned it back on and everything seems fine again.

Anyone know what it could have been ?

Thanks in advance

strange clicking noises aren't good. When that happened to me my harddrive fucked up. I had to send it away to be repaired.

Iv had hard drive failure in the past and clicks didnt sound like those of a hard drive failure click. Well everything seems back to normal now, the fan is running ok and there is no clicking noises. Weird!

I'm not sure whether I should start a new thread for this, but i'll start off by asking here...:

I will need a laptop for when I go to Uni, and i'd like some advice on what/where to buy.
I don't need an absolutely top-end laptop to play all the new games on, but i'd like it to be very fast and have a pretty good sized hard drive.
Basically what i'm looking for is a laptop with a good CPU, RAM and HDD.

Any help appreciated, thanks in advance :).

Hi everyone

i am building a HTPC for HD material and general cool stuff

I will have the following case

http://www.silverstonetek.com/products/p_contents.php?pno=SG02-F&area=

as it fits my AV setup perfectly (only have a small space)

i am trying to keep the price as low as i can, but obviously i have a criteria to reach and i will not sacrifice that

basically i want to be able to play full HD material, either being blueray (may or may not get a blueray drive depending on how the rest falls in or out of the budget)

i would imagine i would need atleast a dual core cpu and decent graphics card to handle full HD.

heat is going to be an issue, so the lower power the better so maybe the AMDe cpu's?

so i need a machine that will handle full Hd material either mkvs/blueray etc etc, i do not need to play games

which motherboard is suitable that has a good enough on board graphics for HD or am i better going for a dedicated card?

i am a bit out of touch on what is good or not lately, so any help would be great

budget £300-400 if that is possible, which i believe it is

must be able to run windows 7, also it needs to be hooked upto an amp, so if the hdmi cannot carry audio as well as video (i know some boards don't) then it must be possible to connect up with a seperate digital audio cable

thanks in advance for any input

forget the above post, just bought the following which will do me nicely for a HTPC non gaming machine (have xbox for that)

no sound card? no tv tuner card?

get 4gb of ram. 1080p can be beefy to run plus recording live tv would also be helped with extra ram.

other then that you pretty much nailed it. where are you shopping? Get Nocta fans. they push more air and are quieter than any other case fans.

what about water cooling? make your pc silent using a passive wc cooler such as the zalman one that my mate has for his htpc.

nope don't need a sound card ( will only run AC3 or DTS)or a tv tuner card

i have dreambox hd with a hdd that can do all that

2gb ram mixed with gpu and cpu will be fine for full hd.

water cooling, cba with that and it would push the price up, i won't get much heat from the components i have bought so it should be cool..

will get my stuff tomoro and will see if i have time to put it together after work...

oh i bought it from scan.... and i got another TB drive to match the other one, will use it to raid and if i ever need more space then i have the option

Anyone? :)

I'd be looking to spend around £500, is it possible to get a good one for that price?

This problem has just happend again and the noise definatly came from the Power Supply inside the PC. Would anyone recommend just having a look inside and cleaning or buying a new Power Supply

Thanks again

Anyone know if a Nvidia XFX GTX 275 graphics card would play the latest Pro Evo?
