The General PC Questions Thread

Anyone know any good online websites that sell computers?

Wanting to buy something good that will last me a few years and play a few games like FM and Pro evo on. Thanks for any suggestions.

BIOS update ?

Hi everyone ,

I have a Gigabyte M61P-S3 board. I bought a Athlon 64 x2 6000, 3.1 GHz to replace my Athlon 3800. I did a BIOS update, swapped processors out, rebooted and I get no POST at all. Just fans. No beep code. nothing.
I put the Athlon 3800 back in and it works fine. My question... Is there something else that I have to do in BIOS so the new processor will boot or does it sound like a dead processor?

Another thing. I did try to use the processor before I did the BIOS update and it would boot but system would shutdown after a few minutes. Like I said, that was before. Now nothing but fans. Any thoughts on this?

Cheers, right I got my model number now and Iv done a scan with a program called Crucial.

However Iam now confused with the results I have got back :

Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-8500,DDR2 PC2-6400,DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*

So am I right in believing I cant now go buy a 2GB DDR2 and just stick it in!?

Well if it's correct that the max is 1gb per slot then it would seem the fastest you can buy is DDR2 PC2-8500 but at 1gb, which seems odd, what's your motherboard make and model?

What would you recommend please ? How much differance do you think adding 1GB to what I have already (which is 1GB DDR2 RAM 5300

I dont really fancy buying 4 seperate 1GB sticks, I wonder what would happen if I tried a 2GB stick!

now aint a good time to upgrade on ram because a few months ago, a typical 4gb ram costs no more than £40, now its nearly £80 and there will be a price drop this xmas.

Typical! I wonder why that is

On a side note what do the differant numbers for the DDR 2 RAM mean?

Such as 5300, 6400 and 8500, I presume the higher the number the faster performance but does it really make that much differance?

Thanks

If you stick a 2gb dimm in, worst case would probably be that it wouldn't boot up, it shouldn't do any damage but of course one can never be 100% sure, as you only have 1gb right now I think you will see a significant improvement, 1gb is nowhere near enough really for any PC that does anything besides a bit of surfing.

Yup it's the speed of the dimm, higher the number the faster it is, based on the fact you only have 1gb of ram I would assume the rest of your PC isn't cutting edge (no offence intended!) so I think you don't need to worry about getting the faster dimm out there, maybe just stick another 1x 1gb 5300 in.

Haha none taken! All I use my computer for is bit of surfing and media really. I have no interest in using it for any high powered games.

So another 1GB DDR2 5300 should make some differance for me then?

Cheers Placebo you have been a great help

Yeah it'll make a big difference as it'll basically give 1gb to the OS and 1gb free for your apps, when you only have 1gb ram you tend to find 500mb+ is used up by the OS and all the other things you run have to fight it out for the rest, resulting in your PC getting slow and laggy after it's been running for a while.

You'll want to match it up to the make/model of your existing ram then you can run it in dual channel mode which in theory boosts performance, it's not always necessary to match up dimms to get dual channel mode but some motherboards are picky, as yours doesn't seem to be a well known make/model I'm guessing it'll be one of the picky ones :)

Haha just when I thought it was allover and all I needed to do was buy the thing!

So I need the new one to be the same make/model as my existing one, any idea how I find out the make/model of the one I have got then ?

Its question after question when it comes to computers!sorry to bother you again

Just get these 3 and put them in?

hi guys need some help please! My laptop wont go onto windows, it loads and then where the log in screen should appear its just black with a (movable) cursor. Acer have told me to reset it to factory default but obviously i'll lose all my stuff. Is there a way i can get the data off the hdd using a cable to connect it to another pc?

In theory you might be able to connect a USB HDD that has a working windows install and boot into that instead of your onboard HDD, alternatively you could open up the lappy and remove the HDD and put it into another PC, but of course that breaks the warranty and is risky, have you tried booting into safe mode, last know good and things like that? Tried inserting your windows DVD and choosing repair? What version of windows do you have?

I'm on vista. Safe mode does exactly the same thing (apart from the larger pixelated cursor!). Looking into using a vista dvd now to repair. Thanks

Mmmmm good idea that! I just tried booting from someone elses vista disk (i didnt burn one ) and it wont let me repair as its not compatible apparently? Might be because its a 64bit disc and the lappy is 32. Got a mate with 32bit windows7 so might try that.

I need some advice

My Sister has a old NTL modem similar to this

ntl250a.jpg

Her son has a 360 and wants to go online but because this old box only has 1 LAN port they can only go on 1 thing at a time

Does anyone know of a cheap router that will work and has a couple of Lan ports?

The only reason im asking is because of the cable that screws into the back of this old box, i cant say i have seen any that do this

Thanks
