Sony PlayStation 3

I have a question about 1080p on the PS3.

If a TV set is capable of displaying 1080i at the highest what's the highest res you could get out of the PS3? For example, would I have to 'settle' for 720p since I wouldn't be able to display 1080p, or will I still be able to get something better than 720p from displaying 1080p through 1080i resolution?
Sorry if the question sounds confusing :p

The highest you can get out then is 1080i, because the TV won't support 1080p. What TV is it in question?

Also your TV is most propably a 768 or 720 lines TV I assume so 1080i would be downscaled. It would be a matter of opinion whther you see a difference, some TVs cope better than others.

And also for movies, 1080i and 1080p is the same thing. Why? 1080i means the TV screen will deinterlace the image, and 1080p means the TV won't need to do anything, both at 24fps.

Thomas I was going to post that over the weekend. Do you not find this extremely embarrasing of Sony? How low do they have to go to sound like they have the better console?

And "Gamers Day"? There wasn't one member of the public there, it was all games journalists :)

No, look Wii price ;)

more serious, that show the PS3 core and the 360 core have the same price. (delete HD-DVD because only for movies) but add hard drive and wireless pad...
Isn't a critic but it's easy, if Sony delete HDMI, Wireless, Hard Drive, Bluetooh, wifi, blu ray, of course the PS3 have a lower price.

I love these kind of skewed journalistic views. Hello fanboys, the HD-DVD drive for the 360 is not a required part of the system to play games, neither is the wireless controller. And before one of you try to say thats what makes it equal with the PS3, the Wii has no ability to play movies at all so if your going to use that stance, for the Wii you need to buy either a stand-alone Blu-Ray or HD-DVD drive for it to even be in the same boat. Also, why use the Xbox 360 core system? Let me guess, to keep even with the lower PS3 right? because its so obvious the person who made this list was aiming for "fairness". Want a non biased (pure gaming view) way to look at it...............I sure do.

PS3 = $499 (wireless controller and 20GB HDD)
Xbox 360 = $399 (wireless controller and 20GB HDD)
Wii = $249 (Wireless controller)

Yeah agreed. I just find it sad that companies have to take swipes at each other in order to sound better. Why don't they let the product sell itself?

The 360 is out, we all know what it can do. However Sony need to prove what the PS3 can do above and beyond the 360, making stupid charts like those above won't win anyone over.

The key thing for me is the price of games. Currently they are £49.99 online for the PS3, that is absolute madness! Playing games is what people want to do on the PS3, but if the games are that much then people will have to be very selective, or the games will have to be REALLY good.

Correct, but then personaly i dont think microsoft is doing any worse than sony is doing "bitching" wise, why?, well if you watch the microsoft conference at XO6 you'll get my drift ;), with peter moore taking shots at sony every micro-second he had a chance, which i think is just pathetic for both companies. Let the consumers choose out of personal preference and not "misguided hype" or "Pes/Fifa07 is exclusive to -----" irrelivant disgusting stink bombs these overgrown companies are dropping

I am sick of all this, "My Dads better than your dad!" bollocks that is going on with these consoles right now.

The PS3 will sell whatever price Sony put on it and on day 1 you will see it selling out, fact!

Spot On:applause: :)

Thanks for the info Ash.
Now that I think about it, I'm not so sure many devs will be doing 1080p that much on the PS3 because of the resources that it uses, and will stick to 720p (which should also make Xbox 360 / PS3 multiplatform games easier for them).

Sony moves to block PS3 imports to Europe

European gamers hoping to get around the PS3 delay through the magic of importing will have a tough time of it. The BBC is reporting that Sony will "utilise [sic] the full scope of the law" to discourage retailers from importing systems from the U.S. and Japan before the system is released in Europe next March. The move comes just days after a London high court judge blocked importer Lik-Sang from selling PSP systems in the European Economic Area.

Apparently, Sony only has the buyer's best interests at heart, saying that they're only "trying to protect consumers from being sold hardware that does not conform to strict EU or UK consumer safety standards." Not bad as an official justification, but the real issue probably has more to do protecting European retailers and maximizing limited launch quantities than actually protecting the odd importer.

good luck my european friends.

I just have one question regarding that first bit of Gamers Day info with the required stuff.

PS3 owners wont have to pay a subscription fee like X360 owners?

I always thought you would, the appeal gets even wider :)

lucky fuckers, are they hiring?, thats a lot of cables though , i thought it'll be the end of cables after PS2 :(........ two versions of motorstorm?

Would love to see one in the actual flesh, IGN UK where hiring not that long ago. I reckon the MotorStorm discs are just different courses, just they aint got round to sticking them on the one disc yet. Lair would be my number one to try first.

L2 and R2 triggers look rather strange - or is it just me? anyway, beautiful machine, let's see how the price will develop.

it looks cool the only downpart the wires looks massive the controller too much like the ps2 and cause it's shiney i would get aggrevated if anyone touched it as there finger prints would show up other than than that looks cool but im getting a 360 instead

What is the cable on the bottom left?

I see the pwer cord, optical cable OR USB cord of Sixaxis i.e. to charge, AV Out Composite, CAT5 and ...

Anyway, you wouldn't need to use all the cables, just the pwer cord as the 60GB has built in wireless.

Finger prints! Same here. Spend a lot of money for the console you've gotta look after it.

From what I understand the R2 and L2 triggers suck on the sixaxis. IGN posted their thoughts on the final controller design a few weeks agao and all they did was complain that your fingers slip off the triggers due to the way they work and due to the way they are shaped.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/738/738858p2.html
More worrying still, the newly-designed lower L and R shoulder triggers feel more like they belong on an early controller prototype than the near-final model. Replicating the 360 pad, rather than being simple shoulder-mounted buttons, the triggers are now hinged horizontally along the controller, with pressure forcing them inward along the bottom - like triggers then, really. Trouble is, they're placed almost unnaturally low meaning we found ourselves operating them by jamming our fingers in between the hinges to apply pressure, rather than using the buttons themselves. What's more, the triggers are convex, with no grooves to keep your fingers in place - an issue further compounded by their smooth finish, offering no resistance against your finger tips. Invariably we found our digits slipping off with the triggers snapping back to their default position. Bah. Of course, the PS2's Dual Shock pad wasn't without its faults either but we still learned to live with it. It's just a shame that Sony hasn't used its resources to bring its controller up to next-gen standards along with its cutting-edge hardware.

seems a tad logical (aspa the slight tild backwards of the whole shoulder area structure of the controller) but then again IGN do post a lot of bullshit most times, i think it might be a combination of sweaty hands and the way the controller is held, but then again i may be wrong ;)
