Sony PlayStation 3

Base Unit Fully Upgradable

Wi-Fi and memory card adaptors on the way

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Sony has dismissed rumours that the 20GB PS3 will not be compatible with wireless controllers, and that consumers will not have the option to upgrade the hard drive.

"Both queries to my knowledge are completely false," a spokesperson told GI.biz.

"Both configurations will support bluetooth PS3 controllers. The only non-upgradeable feature of the 20GB configuration will be the HDMI output."

This confirms comments made by Sony's Phil Harrison in a recent interview with GI.biz, where he stated: "You can upgrade to whatever size of drive you like. You can put in any drive that you like - it is a computer, after all."

The spokesperson went on to reveal that Sony plans to release a Wi-Fi adaptor for the 20GB PlayStation 3. Consumers will also have the option to purchase a separate adaptor that will allow the use of memory sticks, SD cards and compact flash cards with the machine.

However, there's still no word as to whether the 20GB PlayStation 3 will make it to the UK at all.

I'll get a the 599 USD PS3, as long as it does what was promised:

1) Act as a LocationFree hub (I have a PSP and like the idea of wireless streaming)

2) HD Recording (for TV)... my VHS recorder is retiring soon

3) Plays WE11 & MGS4

4) Surfs the net.... no need to fight with the missus.

5) Has BluRay.... like to embrace new technology

6) Online gaming - not that fussed... find the whole online community a bit too intimidating and "hardcore" for me... must be getting old.

The money aspect is not really an issue for me, espec as I expect to be playing it for a number of years. The 360 seems just as expensive anyway if you add up all the accessories + HDD, etc. I think people are really quite childish complaining so much... it's only a console ffs. If the price is too high for the majority of ppl, then market forces will bring down the price eventually.

Sony talked about HD Recording but no news on it yet. There is no firewire IN on the PS3 to record. I think maybe an add on.

NOW it's getting expensive, if we need an add-on... otherwise i felt the price was reasonable + in Hong Kong, hardware and software seems to be cheaper than the US equivalent, even for official products.

I was thinking the same thing when watching the video regarding the rumble, this is the kind of game when the rumble feature comes into its own and will be sorley missed, I totally get you about the difference in graphics also but the game still looks good and looks fun I really want a similar game for my 360.
Ah yes, like Rallisport Challenge 2 on the Xbox. The rumble made that game. You could even feel the car shifting gears, now that was class .:applause:

Rumble in pads is MASSIVE for racing games, esp when your car is spinning in rally games for grip, or on a trakc racing you drive over the curb and feel the feedback. In PGR2 though I had to turn it off, as there was simply too much rumble!!!!! Thats the only game I ever had to turn rumble off. Also some action games it's good when your near the edge and it gives you a little rumble. As mentioned above, shooters too benefit, you could be taking a hit and not actually see the person shooting you.

I myself enjoyed the rumble feature too. It wasn't a technical miracle though.

You can't have everything. That's life. Pretty stupid reason not get PS3 though..

funny (unfortunately for its irony) post on joystiq.com:

In a disturbing twist, Ken Kutaragi has gone on record stating that the PlayStation 3's $600 price tag is "too cheap." The SCE president has again compared the forthcoming console to a fine dining experience. His argument is that no one calls into question the price differential between some slop at the cafeteria and a meal at an upscale restaurant. From his (deep pockets) point of view, "If you can have an amazing experience, we believe price is not a problem."

Does Sony's braggadocio excite anyone? Because it's turning us off.

After a paltry E3 showing - from a games perspective - it's hard to see the PS3 as anything more than a Trojan horse for sneaking (relatively) cheap Blu-ray devices into consumers' homes. The PlayStation brand is being pimped, and gamers are paying for it, literally. It's ridiculous for Kutaragi to suggest that his company is doing us a favor by launching the PS3 for $600. It's also disrespectful. Who else gets the feeling that Sony is looking down on us?

:lmao:
Why would you want a PS3 with no Blu Ray
So what do you think accesories prices will be?
Currently £19.99 for controller DSII, so DSIII I think will be £29.99, seems fair.

Wasnt aware all games are on Blu-Ray.

Why dont Sony use normal DVD's, or are they simply trying tho whore their brand?

1 thing comes to mind PIRACY!

With the console having linux built in it would of been the most hackable console. Still will be but not for games.

As another said, yup they are whoring their blu-ray.

Isnt it asinine that they will put games that might be 4GB on Blu-ray disks? I think so as its poor business practice and a waste of money.

The only real reason I can think of is so they can charge more for the games. But like everyone has been saying, anything over £50 would be suicide

Piracy doen not come into play????

IMHO, not really. Take yourself back to the beginning of the PS2. Its the year 2000. Do you remember how much a DVD-burner for a computer cost then? About the same as a blu-ray burner costs right now. I remember buying my first 4x dvd burner(single layer) in 2003 for roughly $250(after a rebate) and it was not for a big name brand one. Now in 2006, a 16x Dual-layer burner can be had for about $50. Give it a couple of years and Blu-ray burners will become like DVD-burners were a few years after their release.................affordable.

Also, if the Linux portion is how a softmod hack would come about and the fact that $ony "says" you can use almost any computer HDD in the PS3. Say hello to people with 200+GB HDD's and "ISOloaders/Bluraylaunchers". It will be PSP firmware 1.0/1.5 all over again.

PS3 UK PRICE CONFIRMED

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=17105

Sony Computer Entertainment UK MD Ray Maguire has revealed that PlayStation 3 will retail for GBP 425 when it launches in the UK on November 17th, but has defended the price point as "a bargain" for consumers.

Bargain or not, 425 quid is ridiculous for a videogames system and it not going to attract the mass-market Sony has depended on in the UK. Especially when you consider that UK (and in addition Europe) is years behind the US and Japan in terms of HD penetration rate, and so Blu-Ray is pretty much null at this point and will be for many years to come.

When it comes to must have games, considering THE game to get PS3's selling in the UK (GTA4) is also being released for the much cheaper 360 (at £280), Sony could be facing deep trouble with such a price-point.

Piracy always comes into play but why should the average punter pay more just to cover costs?

£425 man, what a ridicolous, ridicolous price.

If their E3 showing was at least OK it wouldnt be as bad, but it looked poor

I wouldn't be so sure mate....Blu-Ray is owned by Sony who always seem to charge a premium for their formats....UMDs, Memory Sticks, Minidiscs etc. For example, a 1GB Memory Stick now costs more than the SD equivalent. To my understanding, the DVD consortium was founded by ten companies (inc. Sony actually). Now you will have a format (arguably) run by a monopoly. To make up for their losses on the PS3 + other products, expect them to charge a licensing premium for using their products.

Soz for the double post..but I posted this in the Wii thread in case nobody has read it:

3rd most expensive console. Anyone remember the 3D0 and Neo-Geo?!

£425 = approx $799...$200 more than the Americans (which is expected). But more expensive than the Europeans(?!) - an absolute joke.

BTW, to my understanding, I've heard the Sony online system is free. But now I'm hearing that it's their XBox Live Silver equivalent that is free (i.e. you can download demos and videos)...not their actual online play system :eh:

Anyone confirm this is true?

EDIT: Read this:
http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2006/05/16/will-sony-charge-for-online-gameplay/

The way things are going so far with Sony, it seems they will charge for online play(!)

Sony will NOT be charing for online play. They will charge for additional services such as music downloads, movies, extra game content, etc.

Confirmed: PS3 online gaming to be free
by Bhavin Shah

Since E3 last week, a number of sites have speculated that the PlayStation 3's "Basic" online service will not include gaming. However, SCEA has now confirmed that online gaming will in fact be free.

The doubt began when Kaz Hirai did not specifically mention online play as a basic, free service. Instead, his slide listed everything but, including friends lists, video chat, ranking and more.

This morning, however, an Sony Computer Entertainment America PR Manager had this to say:

"Please note that online gaming will be free right out of the box."

Online play is one of the features the free (Silver) Xbox Live service does not include, and so free online play on the PS3 may be one of the only features that differentiates Sony's online service from Xbox Live.

It's important to note that certain Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) games may still have some sort of fee.

Yeah but what do they consider online gaming? Playing the old arcade games can be seen as online gaming and it doesnt mean its online gaming for the new ps3 games. Just a thought

Slow down. Blu-Ray is not solely owned by $ony(they are just the only ones who keep whoring it which makes it look like they solely own it), its actually just like DVD was. Im not talking about the current BDA(Blu-ray Disc Association) but rather the BDF(Blu-ray Disc Founders). This group is not $ony alone but contains the following.

20th Century Fox
Dell
Hewlett Packard
Hitachi
LG Electronics
Matsushita Electric Industrial (Panasonic)
Mitsubishi Electric
Philips
Pioneer
Samsung Electronics
Sharp
Sony
TDK
Thomson

Now Take a look at the founders of DVD.

Hitachi, Ltd.
Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd.
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation
Pioneer Electronic Corporation
Royal Philips Electronics N.V.
Sony Corporation
Thomson
Time Warner Inc.
Toshiba Corporation
Victor Company of Japan, Ltd. (JVC)

See its not that much different than DVD was. :)
