EXCLUSIVE! Gers take Vignal on trial

LIVERPOOL left-back Gregory Vignal has joined Rangers on trial and the 23-year-old Frenchman could even play some part against Tottenham at Ibrox this evening.

Vignal, who is just under 6ft, has made 20 first-team appearances since joining the Anfield club from Montpellier in September 2000 – including Champions League games against Dortmund, Dynamo Kiev, Spartak Moscow and Boavista and English Premiership games against Everton, Newcastle and Spurs.

However, former boss Gerard Houllier farmed him out to Rennes then Espanyol last season in a bid to gain vital top team experience.

Alex McLeish and his coaching staff will run the rule over the pacey defender at Murray Park over the next few days and he could bag some game time on the hallowed turf this evening and the Newcastle tournament at St James’ Park this weekend.

Hopefully he'll get a run out against Spurs tonight.

IT’S full-time at Ibrox and goals from Nacho Novo and Dado Prso have given the new-look Light Blues a convincing 2-0 victory over Jacques Santini’s Tottenham.

Alex McLeish named five summer signings in the starting line-up for the first home game of the season - Marvin Andrews, Jean-Alain Boumsong, Novo, Prso and Alex Rae - and it was Rae who had the first real chance after 10 minutes.

Stephen Hughes and Prso combined well in the middle of the park, the big Croatian striker knocked the ball into Rae’s path but sadly the new vice-skipper screwed his 22-yard shot well wide.

At the other end the hulking presence of Boumsong and Andrews did well to snuff out the threat of Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane, before the Republic of Ireland hitman was stretchered off, then Prso almost marked his home debut with an early goal.

Paolo Vanoli sent over a wicked corner that Dado met perfectly with a bullet header but former Leeds stopper Paul Robinson showed tremendous reactions to tip the ball away for another corner.

The Light Blue legions didn’t have long to wait for the opener though and it was Spanish livewire Nacho who broke the deadlock midway through the first-half.

The pacey frontman collected Fernando Ricksen’s long pass, raced into the Spurs penalty box and drilled a superb right foot shot past the diving Robinson for his fifth pre-season strike.

McLeish’s men thoroughly deserved the lead, however, club skipper Stefan Klos was called into action near the end of the half. Jermain Defoe tried his luck from the edge of the box but the German dived to his left then accepted the acclaim of the fans for catching the England striker’s drive cleanly.

Rangers could, and probably should, have had a second just before the break. Chris Burke curled in a dangerous free-kick from the right flank but Robinson parried Peter Lovenkrands’ header.

However, Pistol Pete atoned for his miss moments later by setting up Prso for the second on the stroke of half-time. The Dane raced down the left flank, fired over a low cross and Dado was in the right place at the right time to bundle the ball home and open his Ibrox account.

Trialist Gregory Vignal was introduced at the start of the second period, for Paolo Vanoli, and the 23-year-old French trialist had a decent game at left-back.
He linked well with Lovenkrands on the left flank and Pete, eager to run at Tottenham’s defence all night, almost created the third for Novo five minutes after the restart.

The former Dundee ace latched on to Peter’s pass 12-yards out but the Spaniard’s left foot drive drifted high past the post with the goal at his mercy.

The hard-working Novo earned a standing ovation when replaced by Shota Arveladze with 25 minutes left on the clock and he can be well pleased with his Ibrox debut.

Strike partner Prso was also given a rousing reception when he was substituted for Steven Thompson a couple of minutes later and there are real signs the pair will form a profitable double-act throughout the new campaign.

Arveladze, fit again after a recent knee operation, sliced wide just before Thommo’s entrance and Lovenkrands went close with a long-range effort but Gers, for all their dominance, couldn’t add to their tally.

It was another encouraging pre-season display from the Light Blues who head to Newcastle this weekend - to play in the Gateshead Cup at St James’ Park - high on confidence.

The goals:

Well I was kinda right wasn't I..........he did do a grand job, worth about that anyway.

Novo was anonymous from what I watched, most of the second half, his crossing is terrible. I didn't see anything that remotely worried me, although Boumsong looks a good player - again I only watched most of the second half, they conceded 3 in the first ;).

I thought Novo looked a really good player myself. He is very fast and tricky and almost scored a good goal when he took 2 defenders out of the game with a nice turn, plus he set up the first of Rangers goal.
I think he will be a great success at Rangers

Rangers 4-0 Livingston

GOALS from Dado Prso, Stephen Hughes (2) and Shota Arveladze have earned Rangers a convincing 4-0 SPL victory over Livingston at Ibrox.

The new-look Light Blues started with a bang, after a pre-match warm-up from Andy Cameron, and Croatian hitman Prso probably won't have an easier finish all season.

Shota Arveladze's header - from Gregory Vignal's dangerous free-kick - was cleared off the line, the ball landed at the feet of Hughes who hit a low trundler towards goal and Dado was in the right place at the right time to knock home his first of the campaign from close-range.

However, Derek Lilley almost grabbed an equaliser a couple of minutes later when he raced past Marvin Andrews and fired a low drive towards goal, thankfully Stefan Klos made a great block with his right leg and the ball was cleared.

Lilley had an even better chance to score midway through the first-half when Klos failed to take a dangerous Steven Boyack free-kick.
The ball landed at the striker's feet around 14-yards from goal with Stefan off his line but his shot was deflect away for a corner.

At the other end Peter Lovenkrands blasted well over the bar after great wing play by Nacho Novo then Vignal and Hughes had decent shots blocked.

The second goal was coming though and it duly arrived on 32 minutes. Hughes was the provider, tapping home after great work from Novo, Lovenkrands and Arveladze - who had started the move with an outrageous back heel on the touchline.

Shota could have helped himself to a goal at the start of the second period when Livi keeper Roddy McKenzie flapped at a long ball but the Georgian failed to get a decent connection and the chance was lost.

Rangers enjoyed plenty of possession after the break without creating too much and Paolo Vanoli was introduced to the action in place of Vignal just after the hour.

The Light Blues had a great shout for a penalty a couple of minutes later when Dorado tugged Prso down in the box, referee Ian Brines had other ideas though and waved play-on - Steven Thompson replaced the former Monaco man shortly after the incident.

Thommo should have made it 3-0 on 78 minutes when he looked to have an easy finish after great work from Arveladze but the big striker miss-hit his shot. Thankfully the ball eventually dropped to Stevie Hughes and the young Scot lashed a low drive past McKenzie for his second of the match.

Shota sealed an impressive display at the death when he rifled past McKenzie from 12-yards after good play from substitute Paolo Vanoli.

A comfortable victory for Rangers then and the new boys on show all turned in solid displays. Prso is off the mark, Novo worked hard on the right flank, Andrews looked good beside the excellent Jean-Alain Boumsong in central defence and Vignal enjoyed a decent game at left-back.
---------------------------------------------------------

Would have been a good day if Derek Lilley had stayed on the pitch in the other game.

Rangers have invited former Dutch international Richard Witschge to spend some time training at the club.
The 34-year-old midfielder formerly with Ajax, Barcelona, Bordeaux and briefly at Blackburn Rovers spent last season playing in Japan.

A statement on the Rangers website said: "The club will monitor the situation on a day-by-day basis."

Left-sided Witschge won 31 caps for Holland, mainly as a holding player in the middle of the park.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Meanwhile...

Rangers' Alex Rae will discover the extent of his punishment from Uefa on late Monday afternoon.
The midfielder was charged with gross unsporting conduct after officials viewed a tape of his challenge on CSKA Moscow's Serghei Dadu.

Rae appears certain to miss the return leg of the Champions League qualifier with CSKA and could be banned for anything up to six games.

Rae was accused by the Russian club of deliberately kicking Dadu on the head.

thats probably a good thing rae is a fucking idiot and a liability i can't stand him he could start a fight in an empty room

Correct decision .

Surely Rangers have fiddled with that Dutch boy's birth certificate, he's really about 45! I remember him playing alongside Danny Blind and Aaron Winter!

Absoulte shambles by Uefa, as usual, we got the free kick, no mention in the refs report and no mention from observer in stand, but a witch hunt by the scottish media, gets him banned for 5 games. I wonder if the same amount of crap would have been written if it was Balde or Lennon?? I think not these 2 have caused actual bodily assualt in old firm games and got away with it. Welcome to scotland Alex, your fans are behind you 100% and remember, we are the people, no one likes us we dont care!

LOL, 'ra peepil'!

What about the 29 tv cameras that caught the incident, suppose they should have been inadmissable eh? You got the free-kick? So, if Lennon gets halfed and gets a free-kick, is he allowed to turn around and boot the guy in the head afterwards because "got the free-kick"? What kind of pishy argument is that?

Neil Lennon has never ever kicked anyone while they were lying on the ground, in fact he's been the recipient of such a kick while playing for Leicester, from Alan Shearer. Bobo did elbow someone and got done for it, despite the referee or the 4th official not seeing or reporting it. Funny that eh, must be the old witch hunt again?

Can't wait to see Rae in the first OF game, I'll give him 7.35 minutes .

That guy on Scotsport hit the nail on the head.

If the ref had seen it and thought it was bad, he would have been sent off and miss one match.

So why the fuck have UEFA decided 5!?

Wanks.

FFS Foxy listen to yourself. If the referee had seen it or not, CSKA would still have lodged a complaint about the severity of Rae's behaviour, UEFA would still have used TV evidence and he would have still got a 5 match ban.

THE GUY BOOTED SOMEONE IN THE HEAD! What exactly are you expecting? They gave Totti 3 matches for spitting, they gave Di Canio about 8 months for pushing a referee, it's not a case of 'picking on Rangers'.

On this matter, last week Derek Johnstone said Rae had "no case to answer", yet tonight he said a 2-3 game ban would have been the correct decision. There's an example of the 'biased' Scottish media, this guy is on Rangers' payroll FFS.

Rangers have appealed against the decision with the outcome to be announced on Monday 23rd - two days before the return leg versus CSKA Moscow.

it wasn't that bad at full speed.

See the gers signed an 18yold kid from Queens Park. Scored 5 goals in 22 matches.

Gers news in brief....

18 year old Queens Park striker Cacery signs for Rangers. Someone under-30!

Alex Rae loses his appeal to UEFA. 5 match ban still stands.

Richard Witschge not offered contract after trial.

Mustapha Hadji arrives on trial!
