Re: PES2010 News & Rumours thread

Gamespot review

Fans of the series will be pleased to hear that even at this early stage, the game plays very well

The competition between football games looks set to be fiercer than ever this year. EA Sports showed its hand early, demoing FIFA 10 all the way back in April when it was only 45 percent complete. Konami responded with a teaser trailer for Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June, which showed an extraordinarily realistic-looking Lionel Messi tearing up the pitch. Today, Konami offered us the first chance to play its game in central London so that we could assess the gameplay, features, and players firsthand.

The first trailer for Pro Evo 2010 emphasised player likenesses, and from what we saw of the preview build, the in-game models deserve as much praise. Players from Liverpool and Barcelona--the only two teams included in this demo--looked incredibly realistic, with Steven Gerrard and Lionel Messi in particular looking just like their real-life counterparts. The most impressive aspects of the character models were the fine details, such as arm hair, the rippling material effects on their shirts, and their overall likeness to the real players.

The build we played was running on the PC, which is apparently the format that the game is developed on, and we used the Xbox 360 pads to play the game. Konami has said that it's not introducing 360-degree control this year, addressing the major upgrade to FIFA 10, but it is something that's being considered for Pro Evo in the future. Fans of the series will be pleased to hear that even at this early stage, the game plays very well, although it was sadly too early to pick up some of the finer tweaks that have been made to this year's game.

The big upgrade for this year's game is the tactics system, which includes two new features. The team-style feature allows you to tweak defensive and offensive team strategies using sliding scales. Both attacking and defending have their own tweaks on a 100-point scale. For example, you can set player support higher if you want your teammates to move ahead of the ball carrier to receive a pass, or you can set it lower if you want them to stay behind for a more defensive game. Konami has done a great job of creating visual feedback for these changes in the menu, so you can see their effect immediately onscreen.

In addition to team styles, there's a new card system that takes advantage of specific player strengths. Each player has access to five cards that can focus player attributes, and these can be useful in specific situations. For example, you can turn off Gerrard's natural tendency to track back, or you can switch on his ability to shoot from anywhere as and when it suits. It's another thing to think about when you're playing the game at a high level, but it looks set to add a new level of strategy to the game.

While the preview build that we saw was limited in terms of teams and modes, we did manage to take a sneaky look around the menu system to find out what's in store. Champions League mode looks like it will make a return from last year, as will Become a Legend mode, where you take control of a single player through his career. The visual presentation is slightly different from last year, with football tickets and magazines used to present some of the game options, but the music is still generic, covering genres described as "new wave" and "tech funk."

It's still early days for Pro Evolution Soccer 2010, but the first hands-on was certainly encouraging. We're looking forward to seeing more of the game at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, so check back next month for even more Pro Evo- related news.

'the game plays very well, although it was sadly too early to pick up some of the finer tweaks that have been made to this year's game.'

so basically they're admitting they loved PES2009 and thus, the review/preview/hands on/whatever is a write off?

Re: PES2010 News & Rumours thread

That's really a very bad job of journalism. The say nothing about the gameplay actually. There's nothing new to highlight on the pitch? Or the journalist is really a stranger to football games?

Maybe, and taking into consideration the built they played, a mix of both.

Edit: Game journalism NEEDS to improve drastically, everyone of us could have written that without having actually played the build.

Old news

Its a preveiw, not a reveiw.

All the hands on have not given anything away, most of it is a complete waste of time IMO

Re: PES2010 News & Rumours thread

Yeah I agree they could've invited people that can actually comment on the game. There is soo much you could talk about:
- Free kicks
- Shooting
- Responsiveness
- AI
The list goes on and on.

But you're right it's piss poor journalism. They should've invited Evo-Web.

He got the arm hair right, though.;))

Seems to me like all he did was scribble down what KONAMI said and not much more.

they could have invited my 91 yr old garandma and she would have produced a better description.

Re: PES2010 News & Rumours thread

I expect some info about the new ML 'management aspects'
+ 5 new pics wil be released

if the game was any different than pes09 then we would have heard about it by now, maybe thats why all the previews have been vague up to now cos from the 50% build they couldnt really tell the difference:YAWN:

Re: PES2010 News & Rumours thread

I'm afraid about the most important thing I mean ANIMATIONS.We know a lot of about Pes 2010 but nothing specific about animations(run players, shooting, tackling, keepers etc)......If they not change this unrealistic movements of players any compare to FIFA 10 is a waste of time.end

This is everones major concern. If the mocap is only adding a few new animations and not fundamenatly changing they way the players run, jump & turn, then we are in trouble.

I would just be amazed if it did not show a big change in overall fluidity. If they fail on false promises this term, then they are in deep shit.

Yes exactly if they add a few new animations only it will be finish.Pes need full animations of players and of course for keepers!Seriously I'm afraid of that....

I'm still very positive though, I'm actually excited at the prospect of getting a proper next gen pes for the first time. The garphics are definately up there so thats a tick. I'd be happy if they change 70% of the animations but the running and turning are a must. This is what makes the game feel so clunky.

The keeper animations, also need a complete overhaul.

I'm just keeping the faith at the moment, but there is always that niggling feeling that there is still something wrong, I suppose thats what 3 years of hurt does to you, however they have all said the animations are the final peice of the jigsaw, lets just hope Gamescom leads the way.

Re: PES2010 News & Rumours thread

Animations and movement are the selling points for me. Nevermind the awesome graphics, strategy and other brilliant things we already know.
The zeemeister needs to take a stand! No fluid animations no money Konami.

Re: PES2010 News & Rumours thread

Maybe I'm being too optimistic but Konami have made a song and dance about mo-cap and using Messi so I with that in mind I can't see them not delivering an all new animation set this year.

Konami have set themselves up for a fall if not.

They haven't done a major overhaul of the animations for a long time and never done mo-cap before, but the thing I'm worried about is the fact that the animations may not be the problem, completely. I think it needs more work than only animation-wise, but that is still to be seen.

They have used mo-cap before but on a smaller scale for selected animations, but this year will be the first time it will be extensively used.

Re: PES2010 News & Rumours thread

Must say i'm getting very excited about PES now. i'm sure there will no doubt be some faults in it but i feel that's because of spending to long on this forum looking for them.

It's still a game i'll love, so long as it's not like PES2008:))

Vitalic, What's your thoughts on all this?.........

......Oh wait a minute!:BAN:

Re: PES2010 News & Rumours thread

The thing that is giving me hope for 2010, is the amount of info we are getting and the fact Konami actually look to be working on the title this year, I got the impression the PES team used to be four blokes and a couple of temps.

If we get good news on the ML(spit)front I'll be hyper, though a little concerned.
What if they are both great titles, It took me months to get to grips with FIFA after playing years of PES.
If they both have full league systems even if I have to edit the PES one, which one do you choose... :?:CONF:

Re: PES2010 News & Rumours thread

Just go with the one that's more enjoyable.

PES has always been my fav, I just don't get the same buzz from FIFA. Although I'm sure FIFA 10 will be a great game if PES is back to form I'll be playing that more as it'll be more enjoyable to me.

Enjoy two good football games. It would be the first time that's happened in many years.

PES will always edge it for me, though, based on superior player individuality, unpredictability, and simply the involvement and emotion of every game. Something Fifa has still yet to match.

Re: PES2010 News & Rumours thread

HI GUISE

I ARE LOOKIN FORWARD TO PES THIS YEAR

IT AR GONA BE WEL GOOD

PLS CAN SUM ONE TEL ME IF DA GERMAN NASHENUL TEEM IS GUNA BE LISENSD?

That's the problem, I put about 1200 hours a year into MM at the moment, there is no way you can play PES and FIFA at the same time, they are two different animals.
Oh well it's going to be interesting deciding which one...:D
