Graphics on the competitor is shitty. Sorry but it's the truth. Unless you like to play in dark and pale matches then good for you. But PES clearly has the better and more appealing graphics. FIFA graphics are weird to me, and seems downgraded compared to even their trailers.
 
I have at least 50 real images from tv broadcasts that make PES look far more realistic.
I mean... we can't argue about tastes. If you like it brighter then you like it brighter and that's all there is to it.
But what we can argue about is which one resamblance real life broadcasting and which one doesn't.

Although if we were talking about how a football match looks when you watch right from one of the stadium seats then FIFA looks more like that, because when you are actually at the stadium, colors are darker, less vibrance, etc. Specially in night matches. But everything changes when you watch it from TV (and TV settings have nothing to do here).

Oh and I haven't even stopped to pick one by one between EXACTLY the 589 images I have. I just selected them at random.
I swear these aren't photoshopped.


So, to sum up: To me, there's no debate. PES 2018 looks A LOT closer to the real thing in terms of graphics, colors, etc.

Like Curdstar i can appreciate the game having a more unrealistic, brighter style. After all, its not football, its a game representing football. I rather have a slightly impressionistic style, something that hints to reality but is inside its own game-world, then something which is trying to be 100% realistic but does not succeed in this (due to lack of resources).

Sorry to sound like a grandpa but I guess when you been brought up with DOS games you know that gameplay counts and that sometimes a more minimalistic style, one which leaves something to your imagination, can be just as, or more, effective in sucking you in as a hyper realistic simulation. As long as the game is a whole and graphics are doing the gameplay justice, there can be magic.






If i must choose between perfect lightning effects or details like Edgar Davids wearings his glasses, then i would always go for those small realistic details that make the game come to live. They matter just as much as pure graphical realism. But to say one is better as the other is pointless, just different approaches, different art styles, different tastes.

I do think that PES' color palette is a tad or two too bright and saturate, and that the lighting can be improved as most of the games look like they are played on very sunny regions. I mean, I had the feeling on 17 that I was always playing La Liga matches. Their broadcast uses a similar color tone, different from Premier League broadcast. I do think is a production decision to do it, but weather also plays a part.

I completely agree. One of the games I liked the most ever was Beach Life:

You see the graphics are not that lifelike (and animations are nowhere near lifelike, look at the builders and at how building is done), yet the game doesn't suffer from them.

It still has better goalpost shadows than PES 2017 for PC (just sayin'). Well, as far as I can see in PES 2018 the problem is finally solved for PC too. And, don't get me wrong, but the graphics of this beta are already enough for me. Coming from either PES 2015 on Xbox One or PES 2017 PC (which are the two footie games I'm playing now) the leap forward is kinda huge.
 
but what all graphics lovers seem to overlook is frame-rates. You can only turn them up so high on PS4, (being old technology today) so frame-rates don't suffer, because shit frame-rates = bad game-play.

This grass color looks best to me. If FiFA had this color pallete, it would be great.
 
Switched to manual last night and the reliance on dribbling from opponents was so much more prevalent than on 1 bar. Their passing was awful so just didn't bother. One guy attempted 35 passes all game!

I took a couple of screens of the stats which I'll upload later. I think I average 120 passes but have hit 140+.

I've also seen a couple behaving the same, even if playing with PA1. One of them ended the first half with 19 passes, and the entire match with 45 or so.
From what I can see, though, PA1 is not as laser guided as it was in PES 2017 which is a good thing (I've seen people with the "green passing bar", which I believe means they have some kind of assistance on, misplace passes from time to time).
What I do not really like is how easily is to steal the ball from the opponents without pressing the "tackle" button: you could just dispossess an opponent by running into him. I take it's because the ball is mroe free, but I don't think it's the right way to do things. I'd rather have players turning a little too slowly and defenders having to commit to take the ball off them, instead of players turning on a dime and defenders who can win the ball without a tackle (which in my opinion helps speeding up the tempo a bit).

I do agree to an extent but I also think this will be something that as people learn the game, will lessen. Knowing how to turn to avoid it, using the first touch stuff etc will all help.
 
Since yesterday matchmaking seems to be happening faster and the games seem to be more fluid.
Using network setting 5.

I have to say that I´m getting more and more into it. Also defending. It´s a bit different but I´m getting used to it.
But it seems that wrong decisions i.e. wrong moves or wrong button in the wrong time gets you punished big time.

Had a few awful opponents yesterday (rainbow-flicking, ping pong passing, R2 shot spammers, quitters etc...), but still I enjoy that game.
The thing is....this beta that is only playable online is holding back a lot of quality of this game.
Imagine playing this offline...how smooth and responsive it must be (mostly it is online as well with a good connection).

It was a good move bringing this out before the demo, because the demo CAN kick ass now.

About graphics:
I´m fine with it but I can´t fully disagree on the people saying that specific versions of the other game look better than this game, no matter whether it´s lightning, the pitch, weather, crowd, menus etc.
In that matter FIFA is more polished, no doubt. But not in the face section.

But my priority is animations! FIFA has good ones, yeah...but mostly it´s way too cartoonish, puppetish for me.
PES 2018´s animations are great, very lifelike and come so close to a real match!

That´s my impression and that´s why I can take a few slighter worse graphic aspects.

But sometimes opponents keep going ping pong passing all the time and you barely have a chance then.
These probably use a higher setting.

However I think that in this game, full manual against assisted users is better to play than like last year.

Full manual vs full manual is THE THING though, so please let´s open a full manual thread for this!
The more people I got on my PSN, the better chance having more full manual games!
 
Can we stop with the FIFA comparisons now, guys.

In other news. Had a few games of 2v2 couch co-op last night and they were all a nightmare. Someone posted (a while ago now - I think it was Northzzz but I won't tag him in-case I'm wrong :LOL:) that when your opponent spams 1-2s, especially around the box, you are powerless to do anything about it. When playing co-op, because of the extra lag that's introduced, it became 100x worse.

Defenders just wouldn't react in time to stop the constant 1-2s, with the AI pulling defenders around based on the previous second's ball location, and trying to play the game properly was impossible (when trying to hold the ball for a couple of seconds to look for a pass, we'd get pressured off the ball, and then off the opposition goes with the 1-2s).

Really horrible matches - the never-fails short range pass accuracy and the super-shots are starting to grate.

Genuinely love the game, though, and I'm looking forward to seeing the changes in the retail version.

Manual always had some kind of assistance, depending on stats of the players you control. In my opinion it's assisted passing that is less assisted right now and that's good.
 
First post here

Just came in to say I am absolutely loving the beta, was a die hard PES fan in the early days (PES 1 - 6) and always absolutely hated fifa, I still do but I was resorted to playing it after PES went off the rails completely in 2008, I couldn't believe how bad that game was coming off PES6 on the Ps2 which I must have racked up a thousands of hours of playing it online and with mates (the golden era).

I really liked the last PES actually (offline only, online was a nightmare ad still is) but this is even much better and I am getting ZERO lag almost online, the game is so fluid, passing, dribbling and making runs feels so damn life like. I can't keep my hands off the beta right now, I am going to sad when it ends in a few days :(

I have already pre-ordered the game on xbox because I am so impressed, let's just hope they don't ruin anything for example game speed I feel could not be more perfect, last year was bit too fast, this is very realistic.

If the servers are this good on the full release it is going to be one hell of a fun year with this game.

I played yesterday evening and it plays smooth; no lag whatsoever.
When playing 3vs3, the quality of play depends a lot on how disciplined the players are. I got two players in my team who run out of position all the time. I was chaotic!
1 vs 1 was much better because you are not depended from your teammate. No lag here too, just like 3vs3.
You said you play at network setting 5: I found this setting, but I wonder why you shouldn't play at the highest network setting all the time. Please can somebody explain that to me?
I play on Xbox 1 btw.
With passing-level 1 it felt different from offline level 1. Passing went far out, sometimes.
I have to admit, I played off line in PES 2017 all year, so I am not used to online gaming.

The res is certainly reduced for the beta. They need a small download and it's primarily for network testing. Adam has confirmed that already and it makes sense. Demo will be representative.

for me what is totally annoying playing vs people is that , u can have 19 shots on target and u would still have a 1-1 draw even if the opponent did nothing all match,

Well I used to have setting 3. With a lower setting you´ll get paired to a bigger pool of people...the ones with good connections and the ones with not so good ones.
It´s like a filter. The higher you set it, the more people with lower connections will get sorted out.
Since I had an awful laggy game on 3, I put it on 5 and am fine with it.
I´d keep it up to 5 if you don´t have to wait that long for an opponent.
 
The first time i played the beta i immediately noticed an increase in graphics quality. Better lighting, more pitch elements, better and more varied crowd.

You forgot that PES 2017 looks poor.....Pes 2016 GFX look better than 17. Compere Pes 2018 to poor Pes 2017 of course show progress but still this game looks like old gen in particular on wide cam view.
 
The stadium lighting and the sky color actually seem to be better in PES 2017 compared to the PES 2018 Beta.
