PES 2017 PlayStation & Xbox Discussion Thread

Scoring still doesn't give me that satisfaction that I used to get in the early PES games. I can't put my finger on it but there is something so dull about this game.

I hate set pieces. Goal kicks, corner kicks, penalty kicks and free kicks all need a major overhaul - they are so dated especially with that god awful cursor showing you where to aim. I can turn that off though I think?

The game flows extremely well. The pace is realistic and the player models are second to none.

But the whole presentation, atmosphere and vibe about PES 2017 just still isn't good enough for me. I need to play it for a few more weeks to really get into it but my initial impressions aren't good. It just doesn't have that one more game factor at the moment but that could change, I don't know.

I will persist with it. Might start a CL campaign next.

I absolutely hate:

• The size of the shorts, mixed with;
• Half time animation for players heading to the tunnel (they look like they're doing a Monty Python walk)
• Turf colours
• All uppercase text for team and player names

But...

I am really, really enjoying the game. It is the first time I can genuinely say that since PES6. If my only complaints in a few weeks are restricted to the superficial issues I've listed above, I'll be a very happy man.

Size of shorts? What do you mean? lol

lol.. hey try 'spanish' commentary.. im loving it :) I have the Australian/pal version of Pes2017 for ps4, and there are quite a few euro languages you can choose... prefer a language I don't understand until the day English commentary is decent..

That's funny because I'm spanish and I hate spanish commentary (spanish commentary from Spain, I mean). And that's why I use the english one.

The thing is I understand more or less the english commentary and, well, despite not being as good as FIFA ones, they are far better than the spanish one. Believe me.

People say this to the point that it's almost a cliché now, but I've just had the best game of football I think I've ever had. I tried to save a recording of it but unfortunately the first 20 minutes of the match are missing.

I started another Master League, as Middlesborough, on Top Player. First game was against Bournemouth. It was a totally different experience to anything I had with the demo or in any of the other matches I played this morning.

  • Bournemouth were really slowly jogging on the ball from kick-off and looking for passes, to the point where it felt bizarre, because it was a new experience. It was so strange, that it felt like they were being controlled by another human.
  • As a result of this style of play, the speed of the game slowed down MASSIVELY compared to the other matches I've played.
  • Playing with the pass assist set to default (i.e. PA1), passes weren't as easy to make, and the balance felt just right, for me. Big difference compared to playing matches with the best teams (such as those in the demo).
  • The guys who couldn't dribble, really couldn't get away with a dribble. I didn't know the players and I was being punished for trying to beat decent players with guys who didn't have the skill to do it.
  • When it got to 70 minutes, because I was constantly running and pressing at this point out of desperation, there were some tired legs. Trying to move one of the affected players felt like trying to steer an elephant through an assault course. Their legs had started to go, and I could actually feel it.

Bournemouth went 1-0 up after five minutes - it was a nice dribble from their midfielder, followed by a dink of a pass to the striker (who was in space after I moved his marker to block the midfielder's shot), and a blast into the top (!) corner.

I was set up quite defensively and I didn't want to push it, but half time came and it was still 1-0 to the home team.

So I decided to be a little more adventurous - first by adjusting the ATT level a little bit, and finally by using the new advanced tactics ("wing backs push up" and "strikers stay central").

Here's the recording of the second half - there's a lot going on:

If you don't want to know the score, look away now (by which I mean, don't click the below spoiler).

Within the first few minutes I had a shot that went AGONISINGLY wide. Shortly afterwards, they had a great chance to score and using the slide-tackle button I JUST managed to deflect it wide.

Check out the moment where they're through on goal and I bring the goalkeeper out, which forces the AI into a shot from range that goes way wide.

Look how many long shots the AI tries (particularly around the 70 minute mark). At last!

That equaliser... Let me tell you, I haven't properly celebrated a goal in PES for years, truly, but for that, I was running around the living room with my shirt over my head. The SATISFACTION of FINALLY breaking their defence.

...and then, being an idiot, I decided NOT to turn off the attacking options (it was my first game with Middlesborough and I wanted a cheeky win). One perfectly-executed lofted through-ball later, I'd thrown it all away.

It looks so real, though, that last goal. It looks like something from Match of the Day. I didn't feel cheated, I didn't feel anything was unfair. It was hard as nails, and satisfying as hell.

Also, those who talk about defender catch-up... Just check out the last goal and how I stand absolutely no chance.

There is magic in this game.

Thanks for posting this Chris. The game looks stunning and it looked a right old slog. There was plenty of midfield play despite what some have said and no catch up bug. At one point I thought the CPU was human because there was some great play going on, passing back, holding on to the ball and then passing it at the last moment, volley crosses, man I'm so jealous I'm desperate for this game. Where do you live Chris? I'm coming round.

Like you said even though it was a last minute goal it didn't look scripted. The only thing I would like to see varied is when you bring the keeper out and the player hits a shot rather than lob. Correct me if I'm wrong but I've not seen the CPU try a lob in the demo.

Also that phrase which Peter Drury says, mentioned earlier, I always thought he said something like "Elmo-hama-dyyyyyt!" Haha whenever I hear it, it's like I subconsciously check if Elmohamady is playing.

What I loved more about it, is that it was entirely his fault that he conceded. He didn't make a mistake with the ball, but he wasn't set up correctly tactically to see out the rest of the game was punished in a matter of seconds.

Attack/defense levels have been around in football games for a long time, but they have never been hugely important on the CPU side of things. In most games you could easily see out an entire game with an increased attack level right the way through. In this instance though, by Chris not dropping the level back down it changed the outcome of the match and this will make approaching each game absolutely brilliant.

Couple of additional (minor) gripes:

• Causing epilepsy with the *.BIN import screen of edit mode
• Menu button sounds

OK, I was late for work but got 3 games in before....
Played 3 great games, for me default speed was a little bit fast. I toned it to -1 and it felt better a little less hectic but will try to bump again to default today. Played in Superstar Exhibition, all great games ManU-Chelsea. First one 0-0 I got 1 shot on goal. Second one 0-1 the got me on a 90+1 free kick in which my goalkeeper was just staring at the crowd like an idiot. third one I changed tactics and beat them 2-0 (jumped out of the couch and yelled with both goals, my wife was not amused...)
So far I'm having a lot of fun, again waiting for some update to start a ML to see if there is some disgusting cheating form the AI.
If anyone is interested in the option file I used (you just select all the BINS and all is done automatically for the BP-Liga-2 italian teams, and it includes the logos for the competitions):

PS: That pitch mod from tho post above looks great....

does anyone know why diacritics have never included in the jersey font? Piqué's official name on his jersey is Piqué yet konami overlooks this. im feeding it back for 2018 but i aint holding my breath lol
This is because the font template is really generic as can be seen here on the right:

I see a trade for Fifa coming up!!

I agree the little things need a bit of polish and Fifa pisses all over PES for the little details but PES has been shit on the pitch for years. They had to get that right first. Seems they have finally released a decent playable game. Online? No idea yet but its always needed work, but build from pes17 and next year add the bells and whistles that grab the neutrals and undecided as they head to Fifa as it has all that. Would love to see what would happen if Fifa lost licenses to PES.
I will buy FIFA as well mate, I always give both games a proper go.

Everyone seems to win their first games, well ive lost 4-0 to Fiorentina as Dortmund. Im not the best player, never will be and tbh I went full on attack at 2-0... got punished. I had bits and bobs to claw it back as well, just didnt take them.

im from germany and hate the german commentary. switching to englisch commentary for years now!
what do the brits do?! are they all listening to german or spanish commentary!? :D :D

Lol same here.
FIFAs german commentary used to be shit and PES was fine.
But since Wolf Fuss switched sides it's vice versa.

Lol for the last two years I can't make out what Drury is saying there . . . he suddenly shouts something like. 'El hamet it' . . . .wtf is that? . .it sounds Arabic . . does anybody know what he's saying?
Ha ha. That's exactly what I thought he was saying at first, but he says it in every match and I remember thinking surely El Hamet It can't be in all these matches, lol.

It's stuck in my mind now .. ..I thought I was going deaf or something. .. it just comes out of the blue . . .'EL HAMET IT' . . .I'd say the woman next doors false teeth fell into her tea.

Is there a particular reason why so many of you are still getting this on a disk, rather than just downloading and having the game unlock at midnight? Just the thrill of waiting for the mail?

Hi! I'm spanish and I hate spanish commentary too. This year I bought the digital US version from USA PSN Store and you have 3 commentarys in Spanish you can choose: Mexican, Argentinian and Chilean. Much better than the spanish ones.

In the US version you can apply the same option file than in the European Version, I have now all the European leagues licensed and with real kits.

Good question. I'm hoping that by having the disk, if there are any updates that mess it up then i can just revert back. I am right arent i guys?
