OK, after further play testing I've noticed some very distinct differences between 1.06 and the previous patches. Take note that I've only tested BAL so far, which is in my opinion the funniest (in theory) game mode ever.
I am actually only going to compare 1.06 to 1.01, present compared to past in other words. I've been playing BAL in the Argentine league for the purpose of this testing, where all the teams' formations are Konami defaults.
1. Inertia is increased for AI as well as slightly for the human player. The most noticeable effect is that it's much easier to get wrong-footed but on the upside it's also easier to wrong-foot the AI. Gambeta is definitely viable again, which is very nice. Passing and shooting reaction from controller to player is fine though. I also noticed that the player reacts to your stick even if he doesn't turn instantly, which is also how you can wrong-foot opponents without using any of the pre-designed feints and moves. This part is really great in my opinion.
2. AI aggression in their own box has decreased noticeably. On the upside, the AI players on both sides takes advantage of this and manages to score regularly without human intervention. The downside is that you often find yourself with much time and space inside the enemy box and some of those goals feels a bit cheap. This might be better on the higher difficulties.
3. Space between defensive line and midfield seems less crowded. This also depends a bit on the formations represented on the pitch, but teams without DMC seems to leave too much space for AMC and SS to exploit.
4. Keepers are definitely better than before, but they are still a bit weak in some situations. They are quite capable on long shots and snap shots from more or less all positions and distances in front of goal but their weakness is when you come from one of the wings, especially near post finishers seem to find the net often. Lobbing the keeper with a tap ,when one on one, seems to work every time unless you miss the goal of course.
5. Core game speed seems to stay more stable than before. The last three matches I played I used a trainer to boost my players' abilities, increasing everything by 10 but Explosive Power and Top Speed which I increased by 20. I then ended up with 95 and 92 in those and 75-80 in everything else. A capable player in other words, which always resulted in crazy fast core match speed on previous patches. On 1.06, however, I didn't notice any significant increase in match speed at all. This has probably been the biggest turn off for me with PES for years so I can't hardly believe my eyes. Maybe it will kick in after a few more matches, I don't know, but so far it seems really good.
6. Defender cath-up is definitely present but less intrusive than before. By that I mean that sometimes it's there and in full force and sometimes it seems like it's completely gone. I'm not entirely sure but it seems to me that it kicks in once my team lead by three-four goals or when we play against much stronger teams. It also seems more present in cup matches than league matches. I emphasis "seems" because it's so on-and-off that it's hard to pinpoint a distinct pattern. In the same breath I'll also mention that my Balance 71-81 BAL player didn't feel like a pushover at all, and at 81 I felt really strong on the ball and could hold off defenders regularly. In the previous patches I've always felt like a pushover regardless of balance.
All in all, 1.06 is far from a perfect patch as they merely reverted a lot of gameplay stuff back to 1.01/1.0/demo standards. Personally the more or less static core match speed is the real winner with this patch.
