I've been playing the shit out of PES since the demo released and only now have I managed to score from a long distance. Beautiful.

I don't know why there is so much down-feeling here. I have a blast playing it on xbox360, version 1.00, zero-bar, everything as manual as possible (except for shooting), and Top-Player (Professional got a bit boring).

Great feeling matches. There are some little problems:

1. When I run through with my striker, he slows down a bit too much when getting in contact with the ball or maybe the defender touching my striker from behind (not what you think, you perv:P) slows him down too much.

2. Sometimes my defense-line makes wrong decisions, like for example three defenders jump out of the way, trying to create an offside-trap, but there are two other players from my team beyond the offside-line.

3. I miss the ability to put out a leg out when I want it that PES 2013 offered. In PES 2014 it happens automatically. Haven't seen anyone mentioning it yet though.

4. Possession-rates still don't seem right, I usually get 60%, seems similar to PES 2013 in that regard.

Despite these little problems, I enjoy the game very much on 25 mins, it feels great, the new animation/physics brings the game to a new level and the ball feels so great and nearly independent.

And whoever said that PES 2014 were too simulation-like, pure nonesense, it's a good mixture of simulation and arcade. In fact I wish it to be a bit more simulation.

I use double tap X for stabs, or R-stick predictive blocking. Still don't work well enough for accelerating/accelerated dribblers. I find them very difficult to catch (online). They run pass your defenders one after another without doing tricks or wrong footing you, even if they're just right in front of you. The timing and direction and responsiveness doesn't allow you to stab at the ball. I've played many games online where players just start runs in central midfield and ran more or less in a straight line, pass 5 defending players, all the way towards goal, again and again.

Blocking passing lanes and using R2 to stick a leg out doesn't seem to work much anymore. I used to defend beginning with blocking off passing lanes, since it doesn't really work anymore, I've done all my defensive work player-to-player, dealing with the dribbler directly, or the potential receivers oft he pass directly. I wish defenders can still block off passing lanes like it used to be in older versions.

Two key game plan edits, the possession stats should improve. For all top teams, make sure the defensive line is between 8 and 12; and the shifting to attack is between 10 and 16.

I´m loving the game less, I mean, everything looks so great, but then I keep scoring and suffering the same goals over and over again, because of unfinished GK! Starting to be a total gamebreaker...

Since I'm such a nerd and don't have a lot to do on my night shift, I decided to film some situations from a game which show some aspects of the game I think should be improved.

Game between Tottenham (me) vs Swansea (CPU) on Top Player difficulty.

1) First situation, as Rose tackles, he gets the ball in his lap, and for some reason, stops, and turns around, leaving the ball to the Swansea player.

Second situation here is not the first save from Lloris, which could've happened in real football, but his second attempt to save the ball, instead of draggin the ball towards him, he gives it a little push towards his own goal, which just doesn't make much sense.

2) Here, a poor cross from Lamela is being strangely diverted by the chest of a Swansea player, but the frustrating part is trying to get control over Soldado. I press R1 immensely to get some sort of reaction, he could've taken the ball first touch or taken it down (as it came from opposition player), but no reaction, not until Swansea player has the ball do I get to control him. This seems to happen a bit too often.

3) This is literally seconds after the last incident, Swansea clear upfield, I have control over Walker, who should really approach the ball to contain it, but look at how passive he suddenley becomes, walking slowly backwards, trying to chest it, even though a Swansea-player is coming. Should've had more of the sequence, as Walker's passivity could really have been seen a couple of seconds prior to the clip here.

4) Lennon can't control the ball, loses it, and Walker comes darting in, I'm aiming him straight at the ball, but instead, he takes an odd sort of divertion and misses the ball by a few meters! Could've been user input error of course, but I swear I aimed him straight at that ball. ;)

5) Great Swansea one-two, I'm trying to get control over Paulinho, cant reach him, and instead, he just watches as the ball passes literally centimeters in front of his feet. You could argue his footplanting made it difficult for him to adjust, but I'm pretty sure the real Paulinho would've put out his left foot to avoid that ball going into the box.

6) This one seems to happen quite a lot. Lamela comes around on the side, and dinks a goal towards goal, the goalie goes down way too early and leaves a huge gap, which incidentally is the one Lamela puts the ball into. The goalie's reaction is fair enough, but it comes too early, and I don't think a keeper would commit that early in a situation where the striker is as under pressure as Lamela is here, he has very little chance of scoring if the goalie just stands his ground until the shot actually comes, as it will most likely come straight at him, or go wide.

7) This isn't the worst example of it, but anyways, happens a bit too often. Soldado is tackled, and does this sort of odd looking stumbling thing, before he takes another moment to sort of recollect himself (incidentally the while it takes for the Swansea defender to take the ball). Sloooow. And I just hate that stumbling animation, it happens far too often in this game and takes too long.

Nitpicking, some of it, sure, but it's all those small things that sometimes ruin the flow of the game. I played a match right after this where I wanted to record the same sort of stuff, but only ended up recording one incident, as the game in general was fluid and a joy to play (although I lost 3-0).

Kind of strange all the different experiences we have. After about 200 games against the CPU, it's about equal on fouls. I've had quite a few pks, free kicks withing shooting distance and the CPU has prob got more cards than me.

Same with long range shots. I've scored as many as is realistic so zero complaints here (basic shooting).

GKs being wankers, defenders acting like the walking dead, that I can relate to.

i know that heart drives some people crazy, and in most modes i would turn it off, but i really enjoy it in ML. it makes tactics and substitutions very interesting, combining nicely with fatigue and form to make you change formations and style depending on your best eleven. i think its nice to have to have 3 at the back because thats all you've got. i played a first match in the group stage of Europa against Apoel, and went down 0-2. the crowd was hissing. i had put out the best team in terms of form and stamina, but they were all blue heart except a winger. i did have two youth team subs, forwards with orange hearts (they had both played in the last game, a victory) but they were half-fatigued. i put them out at the break and we drew it back 2-2. the team and the crowd were pumped. Apoel sank under late pressure and we scored the winner. in ML heart adds a good ripple to make managing more meaningful. when you have a guy on orange heart in the middle of the park, his teamwork helps the other players. its pretty cool. i guess what i'm saying is that decisions get more tactical when you account for heart because they are such team players in ML. so many times i have saved an average player with big heart as a super sub and damn if it doesnt work.

also, the description in the game for the tactic "player support" is interesting, perhaps. it doesn't appear to effect players pushing up, like fullbacks, etc. that tactic is "attack/defense level"--higher draws more players forward, including fullbacks, and the defensive line draws forward also. anyway, the description for "player support" refers to the degree COM players will break with formation to support the ball carrier. its not "supporting" play higher up the pitch, but the degree to which teammates will prefer to stay in formation or leave the formation to support the ball-carrier.

perhaps everybody knows this already, but i had assumed that "player support" meant more players higher up the pitch. actually, from the konami description it means willingness to break formation to support.

anyway, i play that high, at 16, because it doesnt necessarily make you more vulnerable. players dont make more runs or anything. in fact it makes you a bit defensive because your formation will adjust in all directions. the one that makes you vulnerable is "attack/defense" level. i know some have advised putting this high, but if you are trying to get a less suicidally high defensive line, i'd put it at 5-6. also, the automatic tactic for Offside ON is useless, for me. i put that OFF since the defensive lines are so untrustworthy and then initiate the trap manually with the d-pad. this also helps reduce the gambling nature of the defensive line. putting "attack/defense" level high, in my opinion pushes the team to take advanced positions, including through runs. the defensive line, likewise, steps forward. if you're trying to get a deeper line, trying reducing that to 5.

good day!

Not sure whether i am losing my mind or this in fact a product of the most recent small update i downloaded for thegame the other day but I now no longer have any issues with controlled shooting (when switched to manual shooting). The ball used to just balloon into the air every time i used a controlled shot so much so that i just stopped using it. Now i no longer have that problem (I'm on 360 btw).

I also scored my first header direct from a corner (funnily enough in the same game where i found controlled shooting actually worked). It was a really poweful downward header after my attacker ran across goal to meet the ball. The animations looked fantastic. Now i did nothing more than what i had been doing previously (and failing to get any reaction out of my players) but the timing aspect of first time shooting/heading also seems to have had some work making attackers much more responsive in the box from crosses.

Just to make sure i wasn't dreaming i went into performance training and worked on both and it really does seem to me that attackers are way more responsive now.

Sorry if this has been raised before but has anyone else noticed this?

Not much discussion about online play in this thread which to date I've found pretty awful.

Sometimes button presses are ignored, others the ball is hit first time when as far as I'm aware I never pressed anything. First time passes are for reason sometimes not possible even when it's a simple hit, first time touches when through on goal or a defender chasing a through ball can make your man stop dead with the ball, goal keepers are hilarious and the main online tactic is constant multiplayer press which given the above means sooner or later a cheap goal conceded.

I was a FIFA manual player and converted to PES this time around hoping for better online gameplay but this feels and plays much, much worse. I may buy FIFA in 2014 but i'm loathed to pay so soon after buying PES.

Have you tried removing the most recent update to see if it's just placebo or something?

Nah i've not tried that...i didn't want to jinx it while i was actually enjoying the game...

Might do this after work this evening.

Just wanted to see if anyone else had experienced the same thing.

One issue I have with the long range shooting is that if you rifle a shot to the top corner, why is the keeper's animation to catch the ball??? In that situation, they should be tipping the ball over the bar or to the side of the post.

It's clear as day that they haven't had a chance to capture new animations with the exception of a couple, e.g. the Neuer animation they used in the trailer. The video of that volley just posted was nice but again with the two handed diving animation to the top corner?

I hit a couple of shots the other night where everything was perfectly aligned and I expected a lot more power on the shot. Also noticed if you aim to one post and leave it fully locked in that position, the ball still gets drawn to the keeper right down the middle.

Still playing the demo but have noticed so many times where the keeper dives about a second after the ball has gone past him. Not only for goals but for misses. Does this still happen in retail code? As a representation of a late reaction it looks deliberate and terrible.

As someone posted on the previous page, the passing is beautiful on this game. There's a LOT of potential there but I'm yet to be convinced it's complete enough to purchase. I wonder how far they're going with the patch. Hopefully it's a lot more than just updating player faces. I remember one of the later updates on PES 13 had a nice effect on the ball weight and shooting. Keepers need to go up a few notches though before they can do this.

Well, to get a hard shot off, you should be running while shooting, or at least holding the sprint button - no more weak shots.

Also, to get more dangerous corner kicks, press up on the d-pad + the sprint button after having aimed and pressed the cross button. It works!

I confirm this. After the xbox patch i can now score headers plus use finesse shot with manual controls. Finally!!!! :BOP:

Not sure what the corner trick does? What effect does it have?

I shoot while running or while pressing sprint and find it inconsistent. Sometimes it's great but other times when every factor is right for a powerful shot, the same player can hit an accurate but weak shot.

I'm a lucky one I guess. No stutter. No problem with shooting. No slowdown. No problem with difficulty or opponent AI or my team AI. No game breaking bugs. My only point is, the animations can still be smoother.
Same, game simply plays brilliantly (off-line vs my friends and single-player ML). Sometimes the goalies mess up, but it hasn't happened for me yet in this ML (I'm in second half of the first season), so the keepers definitely mess up more often in real life.

I do have slow-downs, but only in replays, no big deal.

I don't have an issue with my defenders freezing, but I sometimes see it happen to the CPU where I can do skill moves just next to them without them taking the ball away from me. Most of the time they do fine though. :)

I don't mind having Heart in ML, It just happens that it either random (which wasn't suppose to be, it was suppose to work per performance/crowd support/home game ...) or it is not even implemented to work. At least you had orange hearts with your two youngster. I am been playing ML with Madrid, it is now match 27, they are always blue, always blue, I'm top of the league and still in the Champions League, what on earth do I have to do to get it to work? To be honest I'm getting bored of playing the same lame games without any magic at all, I win some, draw or lose but I don't feel anything whatsoever? The joy of playing this game is going day after day, I can get sometimes excited with the animations and so but isn't it what I hated FIFA in the first place? Didn't I hate FIFA because the animations were priority instead of timing?

To be honest, they are lot of things that I hated about the other game that are now frustrating me with PES. I just want Heart OUT of ML. I had a match with Barcelona in Copa Del Rey which I won, then they lost in La Liga to Athletico, just after that we played CL, but they were all orange/red but mine are blue after 10 wins in a row WTF? I'm looking for a balanced game which PES 2014 doesn't offer, I might just give up on this game for the second time. I just can't understand how a good gameplay like this is broken by AI, and Adam doesn't want to admit that this game is unfinished.

I don't know if I'll have the courage to wait for a month to have a patch ... and only God knows with Konami (Never trust them), I might again be disappointed by the so called November patch.

I've wondered this myself. The balls with more colour on them seem smaller and heavier to me. I play with the classic white ball as it seems a bit bigger and lighter... weird I know:CONFUSE:

This is purely visual. The coloured balls look smaller because they don't stand out as clearly against the background. Hence why people shaped like a ball are better off wearing dark colours...

The weight would be similarly visual, the purely white ball representing the flight and movement of the ball in slightly different ways (harder to see spin, more prominent as it moves along the ground or up in the air) which overall gives the impression of a weightier ball.

I remember playing WC2010 and thinking the passing felt much weightier and more nuanced than FIFA 10, with subtle curl on heavier passes you'd associate with using the inside of the foot as they were. However when i talked to the devs that summer, they all said they hadn't touched passing at all. I worked out what it was next time I played the WC demo - in FIFA 10 the pitch was a garish light green with almost no turf texture at all. Moving to WC2010 the pitches were far more realistic and rich, with clear lawn patterns on each pitch. As a result it was much easier to see what the ball was doing and get a sense of depth to the visuals.

I stopped playing ML and went to League mode as some people suggested, and by now I'm a lot more happy. Playing with Saint Etienne and enjoying it a lot. I habve to work hard for my wins but up to now I havent' found the feeling of "game turns my players crap" that I was experiencing with much better teams in ML.

I will start League mode tonight or else I might give up on this game. Can't play online 'cause of lag, can play and enjoy exhibitions but I want to play and win for a cause hence ML or League mode, but ML is just so full of broken Heart, so I'll try League mode.

I have found the games where my players are with down arrows or lacking heart, so frustrating that I skip them.

I find winning a few games in a row has a cumulative effect on heart and when you have a team with most players on at least yellow heart that game plays beautifully.

Without this, it can feel like last year’s game and unresponsive. If the opposition start coming back and score a couple of goals, it can end up where your players can barely move or pass.

Konami must be the only company to have created a game where the game play can be amazing and then set about adding things that limit how much of your experience is with this game play.

People just want the best experience possible all of the time. Give them that and give them it straight away and not have to play half a season in the master league to get and then have that ruined for another couple of month if you bring in any new players in January or have to start and build it again if you switch club
