PES 2013 Discussion Thread

Suuuuuupertalk so you play 30 min games, sure you not playing 15 min because it's different to FIFA were you select full game time not half like on fifa. If you are, are the scorlines realistic?

Lol I don't know why I said halves, I meant that I select 15 min in the game settings (though they do feel longer!).

At that game length there's enough time to see patterns of play emerge as the game goes on, and scores are varied. Last night I had a 3-3 draw, couple of 1-0 wins, a 0-0, a 2-2 and a 3-1 defeat.

Something generic like this for a base setup, can be used as it is or can obviously be tweaked and moved around a bit to fit specific players as you need.

This 3-5-2 one's also pretty handy, used it as an option for my MLO team in 2012, but you really need the right sort of players to make it work. E.g. box to box cmf's who are good at attack, defence and covering ground, likewise attacking full backs or wingers that have a reasonable defence stat. Or 1 attacking player on one wing, one defensive to balance it out. Juventus at the moment have the right players for this system, several of which can fill that wingback type role. But I've also used it for the likes of Italy, Portugal, AC Milan, Man City as well. You generally need a good squad of top players for this one, its a challenging one to play with but when it works, it really works.

Thanks! But what are your tactics?

Again it can vary depending on the team and sets of players, but a base setup for that 4-3-3 above would be something like:

Player Support - 6 narrow (online/offline can go up to 20 if pressing by other players/cpu is too much) so the players stick close to each other to aid a short passing game

Position Switch - 15 if the team is generally good at multiple positions - dialling back to 12 or 10 if they are not quite as good

Attacking Style - 14 middle if two proper SS - medium 10 if at least 1 is able to play both striker/playmaker and winger roles

Pressing - 14 to win the ball back quickly suiting the narrow formation

Defensive Line - 0-6 deep to protect you from through balls and chipped through balls or being caught on the counter

Compactness - 6 so your players are not too far away from opposition players, makes tracking and marking them easier

These are what I personally use and seem to work for me in that formation, it may not work for all players so test and tweak till it suits you.

No offense but think you need to learn how to defend properly I've won quite a few games on my ml 1-0. Try changing tactics to more defensive(after you score) as well.

If it's too frustrating just move down to professional and move back up when you get to grips with it

I won my last match by 2-0. Deep ínside my soul I want to resist and prove to myself that I can get good results playing In Top Player.

Do you play with 0 bar passing ? I will try different strategies during matchs depending on the score.

I was exactly the same first season I was losing alot of games conceding stupid goals. Moved it down to professional but found I was getting too much space to pass and shoot. Now back on top player coming towards end of 2nd season and have won more than I've lost, 6th in the league.

Stick with it and you will start seeing more positive results.

Yeah 0 bar but assisted shooting might switch to manual if the game starts becoming too easy (which I can't see happening for a while!)

Hahahaha oh dear. I've been playing an offline Champions League (on Professional), and was just starting to get embarrassed at the ease with which I was sweeping teams aside, and wondering if I should go up a difficulty level. I'm playing 20- and 25-minute games (depending on how much time I've got to spare) but to begin with the scores were coming out as 2-1, 3-1, etc and all was fine. Then I thumped Panathinaikos 5-1 at their place in the last group game, before a second round match against Valencia which I won 6-0 without even breathing hard.

Quarter final v Real Madrid. Ah. Not one of my players has an upward arrow, 3/4 of the squad are blue or purple, while almost all of Madrid's first team are a healthy orange. Oh well, first leg at my place. I set all the defensive stuff as deep as possible, prepare to defend for my life, and...

Madrid are 3-0 up within 10 minutes, after 3 through balls down the middle for which my defenders, who were standing six miles from their own goal, helpfully stepped aside. Chuckling, I play on... 8-0 at half time. Seven of the goals were through balls, the other one was a hilarious run from the halfway line by Higuain, who beat four players - two by fair means, two by breaking the laws of physics.

In the second half, they eased off - or rather, my defenders had their usual mobility restored to them and suddenly those through balls were possible to cut out. They only added another 4 goals in the second half, and only one of those was a through ball down the middle. The other three were bullet headers from corners, including two from well-known aerial beast Kaka. Final score 12-0, which is pretty good considering they only had 15 shots on goal. I had 26 shots on goal, 15 of which were on target... but Casillas caught every one. Didn't even have to parry: I had 1 corner in the whole game. Oh yeah, and Real Madrid committed 4 fouls, three of which were offsides.

It was pretty hilarious, I have to admit, as I haven't really seen too much AI cheating until now. But this was as full-on as I've ever seen - and the lousy thing was, I didn't particularly feel as though I was playing against better players. They were just faster, and my players were behaving more stupidly than usual. Does the scripting only cut in when you're playing someone like Real Madrid, or is it something to do with the knockout stages of the CL? Whatever, the transition from "this is too easy" to "WTF, is this a joke?" was so extreme I think it gave me whiplash.

We won 13-12 on aggregate, by the way.

How in hell could an offside be considered as a foul, Konami? :BRICK:

As per recent PES history my Top Player division two Master League (beginning 3rd year) became an absolute grind. While the gameplay was incredible, the results were excruciating. It reminded me so much of that other Japanese joykiller Demon's Souls--remember that, where if you got killed you had to start the level from scratch, where the point of the game was to make you suffer as much as possible?

I keep asking myself if Konami even want me to enjoy this game...

So I started a new Master League, this time as Newcastle and kept them in the top flight. I can't play Professional because the CPU offense is utterly childish and I end up with 65% possession. I put it on Superstar. I couldn't believe it. I get time on the ball as on Professional, but the CPU offense plays intelligently as on Top Player. The game seems so fair and equalized on Superstar. At first I thought it might be too easy, in fact, when I drew with Norwich and beat Fulham 2-1. Both were home games. Then I lost 5-0 to Spurs away (Bale with two free kicks). Finally a 1-1 draw with Olympique Marseille in the group stage of Europa and a 1-0 home victory to West Ham.

Part of it is that on Superstar the CPU presses slightly less than on Top Player but seems to intercept more. They play intelligently instead of frenzied. Part of it is that my players are much better than my Division 2 side and so the fullness of the game opens up. My strikers are making great runs.

For those of you that find Top Player starting to grind up your joy for this incredible game, consider a switch to Superstar. I'd love to know if your experiences are similar.

Also: if you play with three bars of offense, your sidebacks will always overlap. Keep them defensively aware by giving them marking assignments. The moment you lose possession, they will attend to their mark. Otherwise, they seem to wander for a crucial few seconds before tracking back. Also, if you play a team with three midfielders in the circle, you must in some way match that. I always switch my formation to a straight 4-3-3 with the three CM's in a straight line. Then I mark the two most forward cpu midfielders. I think it is a mistake to mark 3 for 3. You end up with your midfielders constantly crossing each other to get to their mark due to the frequent cpu dummy runs. Better to mark two and leave one midfielder free to think for himself. I never mark central strikers unless the cpu plays a 4-4-2 and one of the strikers is slightly deeper than the other (I guess that would be a 4-4-1-1), or an SS. Then I play a formation that includes a DMF and let him mark the SS. Those playmakers are a bitch. I think in the average game I mark about 4-5 players. Against OM I played a 4-3-3 and even had my two wingers mark the CPU sidebacks, so I had two midfielders marked, both their wingers marked with my sidebacks, and both their sidebacks marked with my wingers. Only my two CBs, my middle CM, and my lone striker had no specific defensive tasks. I thought a tie was a good outcome away from home.

--Good day!

Edit: I apologize for this entire post. I'm terribly wrong about Superstar.

I think it's coming back in some form with the DLC on Thursday, but don't quote me on that.

I thought I'd have a go at BAL. Not a serious campaign, just a quick go to see what it's like this year. Couldn't be bothered making a player or trying to slog through a match with a D2 team, so I decided to be Ronaldinho.

After we lost a training match against Sparta Prague 2-0, I was hauling my Ronaldinhonic arse back to the dressing room when a little message popped up. "You have earned a new nickname: The Welsh Wizard." See, I always wondered why no one ever called him that. I guess it's because he never lost 2-0 to Sparta Prague in a pre-season friendly.

Pressed x to move on from this disappointing opening game, and my agent approached me in the corridor. Before the match, he was patting me on the arm and saying "new season, new horizons" and all of that. This time he had his arms folded. All he said to me was this: "If you feel it's time to call it a day, select [Personal Info] - [Retirement Announcement] to announce your retirement."

Yeah, thanks man. How much do I pay you again?

Nice :D BTW would be awesome if Sparta played with such teams their friendlies in real life :)

Don't the Germans have that strange, wonderful word: love/death, liebestod, or something like that? Half the fun of being obsessed and tortured by this game is to do so with a community of fellow sufferers. Thank you for that...

Nearly. I guess what you mean is Hassliebe (hate/love)!

To me it's more love, so Hassliebe won't suit it, IMO!

btw: hassliebe is an oxymoron! ;)

I'll admit, I've been the biggest supporter in terms of praising the game but last night I did lose a series of games from absolute bullshit goings on. Haven't seen it until now, and after those couple of games I haven't seen it since, but the game was handed to the CPU on a plate.

I basically lost one game 1-0 thanks to the ball being deflected off a cpu player and wide of the goal, easy for my keeper to pick up and with no-one near him. When happened next was bizarre. He refused to pick the ball up, but also the game refused to switch the cursor to him so I could take control and make him boot the ball away. Controlled by the CPU, my keeper aimlessly dribbled five yards before somehow treading on the ball. It flew backwards at a bizarre and impossible angle right back into the six yard box like a laser guided pass straight onto the foot of the one striker in the box. Nope, the ball couldn't have just flown off for a corner or in fact in any of the other 379 degree angles, but right onto the foot of the sticker who poked it into an empty net. It looked even more bizarre because of the speed the ball travelled, and it moved really unnaturally.

Next match, the CPU scored because for a very short time with the ball in my penalty area, every time the ball fell at the feet of my defender he wouldnt trap the ball, instead it would bizarrely bounce off him. Not miscontrol at all, but a bizarre deflection where there shouldn't have been one at all. The ball kept bouncing off my players three times, each time falling perfectly to the CPU, and the third time it happened the CPU lashed it into the net. Then during the second half, it happened again. 2-0.

Here's hoping its not a regular occurrence but these were really bizarre, like a cross between huge coding breakdowns and the loose balls being tied to the CPU with a piece of string.

Yeah these bizarre moments do happen once in a while.

What difficulty are you on again?

I've been spending the whole day today experimenting different difficulties and speeds in addition to preset tactics.

So far I'm more happy with Superstar and +1 speed. I've always played on Professional bit this year there's just too much hoofing and through balls happening ruining it for me. Top player is ok but it doesn't feel right. Superstar has the perfect balance imo. Also stars of CPU teams shine more and you see them in full effect. Teams play less through and hoofing from what I've seen and try to play football instead. You do see players making mistakes too and that makes it more realistic. I did lose to United twice and they just felt too hard to beat, and I was City too. Then played Southampton and felt the massive difference. Gave them a good 4-0 thrashing.

Just hope this experience stays this way.

Oh and I use the Puma Evospeed 3 ball btw. Currently my favourite ball.

I'm on Top Player but I'm gonna give Superstar a go out of curiosity. I've heard from various people that it feels more balanced, less pressurised but still a tough challenge.

All in all I'm still very happy with Top Player but it wouldn't hurt to give Superstar a try I suppose.

The one thing that keeps doing my head in is the defensive line. They can't keep a proper straight line fgs. There's always one idiot tracking a CPU player back to keep him onside. It is really irritating me. It was always perfect before and broke since 2012. Turning on auto-offside does nothing at all.

Also these fouls that I don't get after an advantage is given resulting in offside. This needs to be fixed.

I'm not sure what has happened with these new PES games. PES always had the rules spot on and all of a sudden some don't exist.

It's indeed since the new PES games.
There are some quirky bugs in the game sadly. Like for ex sometimes when you pass or do a slide tackle (shot) the opposition GK doesn't react to it but he does watch the ball and it goes in lol. Very odd.. it's like he can look at it but not do anything.. goes for cpu and human

Is there a way I can start my master league online from scratch. I released 4 players for money without realising it would make it difficult in the future and should very used up their contracts first. I've got a terrible record and wish to start from scratch with default players again but can't see how to do this.

I have looked online and it says to go to MY TEAM, then reset team. Which resets team and money but will this reset my W/D/L record?

That's a nickname system outside the frame of the mode. The nickname has been bestowed upon you, the human player, for ticking some kind of box based on what you did in-game. Nothing to do with BaL, Ronaldinho, or Welshness per se. There's a list of all the nicknames and what they mean in one of the Main Menu menus.
