Hello again everyone!
It's been a while since I've browsed these forums properly having been working about 30 hours a week over the summer and generally just having a good time with my mates - plus the fact I was without internet for over 3 months after moving into the new house!
With that in mind, I apologise in advance for any things I say that are widely known and discussed already, but I thought I would share my views on the game from the few days I've played it so far, I'll mostly talk about the gameplay.
It may just be that "honeymoon" stage of everything seeming new (especially having skipped PES 2012) plus the placebo effects of various new controls that I don't yet fully understand, but this version has seriously impressed me purely from an on-the-pitch gameplay perspective (my priority, I can simply play friendlies with various teams and enjoy the football despite there being nothing "at stake").
On zero assistance the football you can play is incredibly realistic, to a greater extent than any PES (or other football game) to date. Previously I always got the feeling that playing a kind of careful and patient passing game was just something I'd do to satisfy myself when I could have just instead diagonally passed forward a few times for the same end result - this time around though, it seems to actually reward you.
My playing style at the moment is to stroke the ball around my midfield and defence (dynamic one-two is brilliant for this) until I can either release a wide man or get a midfield maestro in a bit of space to run at and unlock the defence.
The AI backs this approach up wonderfully - your whole team gradually pushes forward as a unit, constantly making clever runs to give you options or act as decoys, great stuff.
The dribbling is top notch too, I love the R1+R2 speed burst, it mimics quite well how you go about dribbling in real football. No fancy bollocks, just well judged use of agility and pace.
Finally PES has a proper "finesse" shot that curls, the first goal I scored was a peach with Rooney from outside the box (may upload it at some point).
The ball physics on crosses is lovely, as is the variety you get by double tapping or holding R2.
There are issues and imperfections, of course there are, and there always will be in any video game (or any facet of life for that matter) - my biggest gripes are;
- The passing assistance makes the game very rigid, now this isn't an issue if you don't use the assists, but if you play online then you can bet that the majority (if not all) of your opponents will be on at least two bars, and it shows.
Just try making a long pass with assistance on - it goes directly to the feet of the recipient, and you can completely fill the bar without overhitting the pass.
Also, the through balls seem very accurate and difficult to intercept sometimes - online it's happened a few times where people just ping a first time chipped through ball in to a speedy player out wide and you're instantly torn apart, as a result of zero creativity or decent football.
It's infuriating, I don't mind losing at football games, in fact I embrace it and sometimes even enjoy losing to skilful players as you can learn from their techniques - it's just when people use cheap exploits to compensate for an inability to actually play the game as intended that I get pissed off.
- Long passing is too inconsistent - many times I've just wanted to switch the play to a less congested area, but not filled the bar enough and ended up just gifting possession away in a dangerous position. There's too fine a line between underhit and completely spanked into the stands, this pretty much forces me to keep the ball on the floor except for clearances and crosses.
- Finishing clear-cut chances is far too simple, when one-on-one a simple shot feint or controlled shot will more often than not be a surefire way to beat even the best keepers in the game, and if you get any sort of good contact on a cross, you'll score. I've had a couple of games where I've had about 7 shots on target and scored 5 goals.
- The double tap tackle, does anyone have any success with this? I'm glad it was added to the game, but it seems to react too late for me and I'm just left for dust most of the time.
- Where the hell is 2v2 online? I'm talking about both formats of this - 2v2 as in 4 different consoles (PES6 had this...) and 2v2 with 2 consoles, each with a guest user (PES 2011 had this...).
Now I've had quite a thorough search through the menus of 2013 and have come up empty, I'm hoping that I've missed something obvious and it's still in there somewhere, but I fear that's just wishful thinking.
One of my mates and I have always had those PES gaming sessions, even back in my school days we'd go round each other's houses and spend a few hours just playing co-op Master League then go online (over the years beer was introduced into the mix much to the detriment of the quality of our football

) and now that isn't even possible?
It's mind-boggling how PES6, made in 2006 could have far better online features (both forms of 2v2, actual communication in-game, ability to quit before kick-off without losing etc.) yet 6 years later all we can do is 1v1 with no form of trash talking. Hell I even kind of miss being able to make people watch my replays

.
Oh and what about online Legends Mode? I know that sucked pretty hard before but I'd (obviously) much rather Konami worked on it to make it worthwhile rather than just scrap it entirely.
I'm hoping that this game has the depth to last the year, but it's doing the job for me at the moment

.
If anyone has any feedback, answers, advice, suggestions and whatnot in response to this post then go ahead
