PES 2013 Discussion Thread

Re: PES 2013 Discussion Thread .......

Copy the Demos img file over.

Guys i need some clarification. What is the relationship of the Support slider with the mentality settings.
If my team is on 20 for support and i play ultra defending mentality what will happen.

Unfortunately for pes they stopped making game guides after 2009.

Add to that Attacking style vs support range.
Which one affects the static neutral position which one is the destination position.

I've done that sometimes. One example is if you have an ultra deep defensive mentality and a high player support, when you don't have the ball the team shape will sit deep, but when you have the ball and are on the attack, more players will break forward, you can actually use it to play on the counter if you need to.

Another example would be if you have a narrow support range and attacking style set to wide. In general the players will stick close to each other for a short passing game, but the wingers would look to spread wide, the full backs would join in the attacks more to support the wide ethic, and your forwards would also drift wide to collect the ball or be available, kind of like how Henry played as a SS for Arsenal, but he would usually drift to the left, sometimes as far as the wing to collect the ball or make himself available; all while the players try to stick close to each other due to the narrow range. You could always put some settings on medium to get the best of both worlds if you need that balance, but it obviously depends on the formation you're using and the players in the line up.

For example in a 4-4-2 narrow formation, if I had one AMF playmaker as a smf and 1 flying winger as a smf I would use a medium attacking style, 2 flying wingers I would probably choose 'out wide', 2 playmakers as smfs would probably choose down the middle, all while keeping the support range narrow if they are a poor team and can't really run a lot so need to stick close together, or if they are a passing team with good technical players. Then again I could play medium or higher support range if I feel they need to spread out more depending on the type of players or to counter pressing from the opponents team. It can be quite complicated if you go down the rabbit hole and start exploring/tinkering :)

It can be odd, it might seem like they could conflict or work together, you just have to keep testing.

Re: PES 2013 Discussion Thread .......

yair, tell us about the gameplay? is a mixture of demo 1 & demo 2? demo 2 only? :)

Re: PES 2013 Discussion Thread .......

Just played the 2nd demo and im not very impressed tbh, it seems like pes 12, i loved the passing in the 1st demo and the running animations, seems to have completely changed, the players look limp they are all limping when they are walking out, the game keeps stuttering at certain points for no reason, I do like the manual passing still tho, you can actually make Scholes play like Scholes which is good.

Not sure if im gonna buy this yet, most prob will after Xmas when its cheaper, still better than pes 12 but only just.

Re: PES 2013 Discussion Thread .......

We are allowed to ask Yair his impressions of the final game though right? As he has bought the game legally from a retail source.

Re: PES 2013 Discussion Thread .......

I think Demo 2 over polished some areas but i like the passing and GK throw from it nothing else comes to mind as improved.

Yea mate obviously impressions aren't an issue. It's just the "game leak" talk that is prohibited leading to link requests and piracy.

Re: PES 2013 Discussion Thread .......

I've been observing this thread for sometime but haven't posted for a long while. Haven't had much to complain about really! :)

I played the 1st demo and fell in love with it. Thought the pace of the game was amazing and apart from minor niggles (keeper throws etc..) I had high hopes that I/we would finally get a game that would be a joy to play for 12 months. After initially playing the 2nd demo I certainly wasnt as impressed. To me it felt like elements from PES 12 had crept back into the game, some players just seemed a little too quick/skatey.

Last night after not playing either demo for over a week I decided to give the 2nd demo another go. I must admit I really enjoyed it - probably even more than I enjoyed the 1st demo. The shooting really has been ramped up a notch this year and it's a joy to have a decent variety of shots that actually look realistic. For the first time in a few years it is apparent that PES/Komani understand where they want to take this game. A more considered, patient passing game will be rewarded by allowing you to open up space and opportunities. The close control, 1st touch and skilled dribbling assist with creating space/chances.

A few games in and the FIFA demo had downloaded. As every year I decided to give it a whirl to compare. Some people may be annoyed with this but seriously what have EA done? I'm certainly not trying to start a flame war, ideally I'd prefer both games to be great - however, my opinion based on the FIFA 13 demo is that this the worst FIFA yet! The speed is terrible, worst than any FIFA I have ever played (and there has been a few), movement off the ball is pants, first touch is the same for every player, the most successful way to get past players is still to perform unrealistic moves and skate around them. Honestly not got a good word to say about it. To me FIFA came so close with FIFA 08/09 but since then the game has gone downhill (a steep hill).

I'm thankful that PES is finally heading in the right direction and I'm actually looking foward to the this years release (1 week to go). It's just a shame that FIFA seems to be going the other way. I'm all for a game that is easily accessible and offers 'pick up and playability' but seriously what have EA done!

Maybe it's got something to do from immediately switching from PES to FIFA but the difference in pace of the game is unbelievable/unbearable. I know PES has it's own problems, one being lack of animations, but FIFA is too quick to really tell whether the animations are any good anyway.

People talk about PES's problems but I think EA have bigger issues than Konami. In saying that, people will still buy FIFA 13 anyway so EA dont really have any problems if you look at it that way.

Re: PES 2013 Discussion Thread .......

After all my dramatic episode  I've calmed down and I intend to get (buy for the sake of clarity)both footie games for different reasons.PES for the fun of the multiplayer mode with friends and FIFA for the CM.
I'm (as many of you) addicted to all kinda forms of football (whether it's on TV, on a videogame or playing it for real), I gotta have my yearly fix as bad as it is

Re: PES 2013 Discussion Thread .......

Okay I've had a good go at both games now and so feel I can formulate some opinions. Let it be noted that I was a big PES Demo 1 advocate and wasn't too keen, early impressions, on Demo 2, or at least the subtle changes from Demo 1 to Demo 2. FIFA, I enjoyed first up as any new title will bring some initial different feelings. I've scored some very nice goals on it, but my overall opinion on defensive AI in the FIFA series and the CPU build up play lacking any real variation is still prevalent IMO, there is not enough in FIFA 13 to warrant my cash this year, career mode may look the dogs knob, but essentially I'm an on the pitch man, and this is where yet again, FIFA falls short of my expectations.

This year I'm also not willing to mess about with sliders, fixes, gameplay mods on either game. I just haven't got the time any more, and nor should I spend hours tweaking the game to cover up gameplay issues. The game is what it is out of the box, and that's the way I intend to play them this year.

I loved Demo 1 of PES, I thought they had it right barring player switching problems and CPU build up play (although I couldn't resist playing it with Jenkey's patch PC and CPU passing was better). PES Demo 2, I was slightly disappointed at first, but if that was the direction KONAMI was taking it then there was no point going back and forth both demos, I had to settle to try and learn demo 2.

And I must say, it's finally paying off. I have been converted. I'm changed my defensive philosophy almost entirely from PES 2012. I still use the contain function and release to tackle CPU players, but this year I think it's far far important what goes on off the ball and away from the man you control. It's difficult to explain, but by being simply more aware and looking at passing lanes and anticipating where the CPU is looking for space, the game comes alive even further.

I've also been tinkering with formations and tactics, to stem what seemed to be a CPU flow up the field on Superstar. Whilst I still think, to a degree, that it is still somewhat slightly too easy for the CPU to stroll on up the pitch (against my all manual build up), at least I can appreciate the game much more now.

The quest for realism is never ending in my eyes, but I guess I have to appreciate that it's a game after all and it needs to find that middle ground of being tough and yet fruitful for the seasoned PES pro and yet accessible and try and be a little fun. The 'game' has to be condensed into 10 minutes or 15 or whatever, and so I don't think we'll ever get the kind of slow totally realistic build up play from the CPU that mirrors mine. This would be heaven....but like I say, a middle ground has to be reached on realism v fun.

NOW...with that out of the way, I want to just say that the more I play PES 2013, the more I think it's one incredible game. I initially was harsh on team individuality and player individuality in demo 2. I can safely say I have been proven wrong.

I had a game yesterday that was Bayern (me) v Barcelona (CPU). It was one of the most intense games I've ever played. It panned out to a tee, For the most part, I was under extreme pressure, was struggling to get the ball out of my own half and relied on sporadic flank bursts from Ribery and Robben. Barce passed it about like masters. I found myself continually dropping to get men behind the ball or else they would cut through me. This then forced me back and made it harder and harder for me to push out from defence. There was one period of the game where I'm sure Barce ramped up their individual pressure and I gave the ball away under panic three times from defence, only for them to play patiently camping me inside my own box. Messi was fkin unreal. Dancing across the 18 yard box, committing my man, making me forcer another man on him, his reflexes and agility were stunning. And this isn't to say that my players and my defenders were slow and unresponsive, but he just was better, end of.

The best part of the entire game was a little cameo from Barce which just summed the game up to be honest. One of my main gripes about 2012 was the needless CPU clearances, especially the full backs when under minimal pressure. A move broke down and the ball ended up on the Barce right back area, usually the CPU just launch it forward. The right back waited on the ball and waited. I pressured with my striker but then stopped. The CPU came forward slightly, then infield and drew me closer to him, before passing the ball along the back. I then took a punt and pressured Puyol even more with another striker (still in my control) but Puyol drew me in closer too, passed to the left flank and back into the centre where Iniesta had acres. I then was forced to concede the entire centre of the pitch as my tactics dictated that my midfielders were way behind the ball. The trade off was simple - I pressed with my strikers without any further pressure because of my midfield tactics and conceded needless ground.

It was so beautiful, so contextual. Fantastic CPU AI.

On other notes. I drew a yellow card inside 10 seconds of play from the first whistle the other day, and the same guy was second yellowed inside the first half. Brilliant stuff. Dribbling in tight situations with the right player is a dream. Player individuality is very good.

I'll also be interested how the game plays with lesser teams, I hope it will be more of a slug fest between lesser ability sides. I really do hope. This would then make the gulf bigger in terms of individuality between the top teams and the rest and make you have to adjust tactics and formations.

Shooting is very good. Passing - well it's okay. I play on 1 bar and can now and again get frustrated by its inconsistency, but I can live with that. Rails - right then. Whilst the game seems undoubtedly freer and open, there is still that feeling of rails. That's probably a totally contradictory thing to say, but FIFA feels totally free.

This got me wondering, can we have it both ways? Can we have the free feeling nature of FIFA and still have player individuality, realistic movement, passing differences, or is rails simply part of something governing how all this comes together in PES? What I'm trying to see is that if we de-rail PES, would it simply be FIFA? I don't know.

Anyway, the Barce game finished 1-0 to me, a truly stunning counter attack goal deep in the second half from a Robben run, then a chipped through pass to Gomez to hit home a deflected goal. Simply brilliant, simply exhilarating. Possession stats - 50%-50%! Wow! And you guys know that 50-50 in this PES will represent a 'feeling' of like 70-30 to the CPU.

Now the bad. I do get the odd game where I feel cheat scripts kicking in, may be just me having to adjust to the game mind you. Keepers. Hmm. The jury is still out on this one. Whilst I do think they are more life-like than FIFA, and are more prone to human error, I still absolutely shit myself every time a CPU player shoots. It's like every shot I'm waiting for the fk up. The parries sometimes go to the CPU way too often, again may be something I'm just missing and may be it is random and not scripted.

Back to the good - variance in passing and crossing, even from the CPU. crossing is just more lifelike than before, with crosses missing by miles, crosses missing by inches and everything in between. Crossing from the by-line is now a bit of an art and the keeper commands crossing far better than previous years.

The colour palette. Man they're got to sort this out. I mean seriously. The game looks okay on my 50" plasma, even night is passable. But this shouldn't be the vase in 2013, I want spectacular. The pitch seems to just still have an unreal glow about it, even in day time. I have to keep adjusting the colour sliders over and over, I have to keep messing about with the colour settings on my tv over and over. Why can't they just get the fkin grass right? Is it SO hard?!?

Anyway, minor issues aside, 2013 will be a definite purchase on PS3 now. I'm really looking forward to it after being relatively passive about it the last month or so. BUT - if ML gets wrecked because of this boots fiasco I'll not be impressed.

We'll wait and see.

Those are exactly my thoughts, I simply can't be bothered trying to alter stuff too. I used to just play the game and if I liked it great, if I didn't then I'd simply not play it. Now I don't have a PC so patching is out of the question, but I know what you say. I have FIFA12 and spent more time changing the bloomin' sliders than actually enjoying it.

Like you I'm playing it as the designers saw fit or nothing at all, just like the old days (well, and every other game!).

Re: PES 2013 Discussion Thread .......

Having already fallen in love with Demo 2 I found a way to increase my enjoyment of it by at least 10%:

I tried the FIFA13 demo.

Amazing how two games, trying to do the same thing (at base level) can be so different and have virtually no cross over areas. It's almost as though it's a deliberate agreement between the two.

Anyway, I have played this Demo to death and I think this is the first year in quite a few when I won't even be tempted to buy FIFA as well.

It's League campaigns (which incorporates the cups anyway, just doesn't have transfers) all the way for me.

Oh, I'm loving the R3 press just as your player receives the ball to allow you to flip it over the defenders head.

Re: PES 2013 Discussion Thread .......

Glad to see some more people enjoying demo 2. I think it really is a case of patience and time learning the game. It definitely rewards you if you try not to pick up and play, which I sometimes do if I'm in a rush.

Robo - looking forward to renewing the rivalry bud ;) Maybe next Thursday night haha. JB Hi Fi is where I pre-ordered my game from so hopefully I can pick it up bang on release day next Thursday.
