PES 2012 Discussion Thread .......

What "sheer variation" do we get with a long ball?

And crossing is only "improved" because it is too easy. Too easy because the defence is awful at getting back into position, and they simply don't have enough scope to do proper clearances. And your strikers end up running past a lot of the crosses. Crossing used to be hard; an art. You had to think about the position of defender and attacker, where you are on the field and what cross type to use. Now, you just hit circle. I don't even try to aim them anymore. If the striker misses it, the guy arriving late is putting it in. Not enough margin for error and another feature Konami continuously dumb down to suit the masses.
I agree about the crossing.

From what I remember, PES5's crossing was much better and more varied - crosses could also end up being scuffed and go out for a goal kick.

In PES 2011 at least, you could just hold R2 and tap the cross button, and you'd end up with a pinpoint cross nearly every time. You could aim in different areas but you didn't really need to. Even under pressure or at an awkward angle, all that would happen is you'd get less power and elevation on the ball, you could never really screw one up completely.

Definitely one of the weakest areas of the game, the animations for it look weird too.

CPU is my new best friend. We play such nice football when I'm on fixed cursor. I LOVE YOU PES 2012 CPU! It's like it can read my thoughts, I never have to ask for a pass. The most amazing parts are when you play short passes between each other while finding space, and the CPU gets it. It blows my mind. Can't say enough good things about this AI they've made. Fucking amazing. Can't even imagine how it will be in full release if it's even more polished.

Edit:

One negative thing I have noticed is that it is too easy to get free from your marker when you play as a fixed player. You can fake that you want the ball on your feet, meet the ball carrier, and then take a deep run. The CPU defender will get fooled by this and having to fight momentum trying to change direction back again. So it's too easy to get free and get a through ball. The defender needs to learn or be aware that you might do this movement to trick it.

Not read one post regarding the much improved crossing mechanics and long ball mechanics of pes2012.

All i keep reading is the same dross spouted about the keepers, graphics, animation, passing and turn speeds.

In a ideal world people would be open minded enough not to read to much into what is so evidently early dev code,or be knee jerk enough to start lambasting the turn speeds of the players as unrealistic when its clear even championship level players move well and turn quickly on the ball, and that what we have now is a definate step up from pes2011 and pes on the ps2.

Its almost like some pes fans think that only the top players have the ability to turn with the ball quickly and that any other player apart from a forward should be slow and clumbersome. Also now that we do have more control and response the inevitable fifa comparisons have come to the fore, when its more then clear this is no fifa.

From almost a weeks experience with the we demo which does allow you to alter the pass assistance and saves your settings in the personel data file ie teamate assistance, cursor settings and passing assistance.Theres not really much imo that is massively wrong with the core of pes2012,yes theres issues with the keepers on occasion and the euro demo doesnt allow you to alter the passing assistance rendering it with a very automated feel to the passing, but the shooting for me feels fine and a big improvement over pes2011.

What for me really stands out though is the crossing and long ball mechanics and the sheer amount of variation there is in these two facets of play, and of course the organic ai that has the same alchemy that ISS had on the n64. You know that perfect equilibrium where know one game is ever the same and how you never act in the same way twice. This is definetly a game that has broken free from its binery roots and come gloriously to life.

This, this, and MORE OF THIS!!! :WORSHIP:

Also one of the reasons I think why it doesn't always hit the target is because of the off the ball momentum that is so wonderfully implemented. The players can't just quickly move to where the ball will end up.

YouTube - Hulk

Some goals from my star man, the Hulk, loving Porto as a team too, kinda feels on the similar level to what my MLO team has been. Not quite superstars, but quality all-rounders.

3rd goal (last) is my favourite by far. I'm loving the R2 shots this year.

I'll say this.. they nailed Berbatov's inconsistency down pat. I can't count the number of times he should have scored..

Yes i see that defender number 24 just standing and waiting for Robinho to shoot and when he does he turns around and hides with no chance of deflecting the ball:CONFUSE::YAWN:

Yes I know that. I don't know why my player does it. But I want you to concentrate on the AI. It's great that the AI is using useful tricks and feints.

Just had a game online on pes 2011. Have to say that it's not bad it's awful, can't believe i had nearly 1300 games on it. This early code demo completely surpasses it in so many ways that i wouldn't be able to mention them all at once. Definitely going in the right direction Konami. Deep down i knew i never really loved pes 2011 but i played it because there was nothing else out there but i love this so much more. Feels so natural, flowing and uncomplicated football. The AI is absolutely brilliant. Have not felt like this for a long time.

I wish the AI would Marseille roulette round me and score more often. It's never a big european game between two teams until somebody does that.

Oh actually wait a moment.

Fifa 2011 AI does tricks like that by the way but i'm sure everybody has already heaped praise on that game for doing so.

Oh actually wait a moment.

:)

I find the second pressure button to be more useful than ever before.

Of course, there's a catch to it: you only have to press it once. But hey! wait till your AI mate is close to the opponent, and then use it. Remember, one tap does the magic.
The one tap technique is also useful for your own tackles.

Btw, in order to maximize the advantage of 2nd player pressure, you MUST play on semi assisted: sometimes the game demands your football brain to read the situation while the 2nd player does the muscular job.

Try it, you'll see the game with diferent eyes.

Edit: also, I find it better to mark without using the sprint button at all, except when I'm out of position. It's just like real football, you simply don't sprint while defending.

Edit 2: when I sprint while defending, I feel like I force the AI into that "acceleration mode". So watch it.

So if someone is running past you how do you keep up? You either run with them side by side or you stick a foot in for a tackle. So I think there are some situations where you need to run while defending.

One thing that they haven't changed is the AI's passing success rate. It's almost always near 100%. Even AI players with techniques of D have the success rate of Xavi or Guti in his heyday.

I like what they have done to the player's passing accuracy; sometimes it's underhit or behind the target which produces a lot more dynamism.

It's frustrating that Konami clearly understands this aspect of football, but always fails to implement it properly for those of us who only play singleplayer.

Messi is scary in this game. He somehow got past 6(!) of my defenders to score this goal:

The AI also has fantastic playmaking vision. Check out this beautiful lofted pass (I hate playing against Hulk):

Loved the Hulk long ball. Not sure on the Messi goal. From a distance it's hard to see how he got through those players. Looked a bit awkward.

Yes id live to know also? Does this mean we get all the details about the revamped ML (FL)? Hope so!

No that info is due to be available around the 8th sept. However an embargo is lifted at 10am today to allow general impressions of review code. Wenb podcast about it later today/this evening.
