PES 2011 Discussion thread

Stuck in division 4 and it's already full of star teams, this mode is going to get real dull, real fast.

Oh well, was nice while it lasted.

Spent the last game trying to injure Drogba, Messi and Lampard, failed unfortunately.

I just really started playing this game and so far it's about as much fun as having your teeth pulled. I'm terrible at it. Every shot I take seems to be totally random. You can't use any kind of pace whatsoever. Slow dribbling so far hasn't worked because the AI seem to double press you like they do in bloody FIFA, and they just run in and knock you off the ball.

No matter how extreme I change the team settings I'm constantly outnumbered up the pitch, I NEVER, EVER, EVER have anyone bombing down the wings despite telling them to do expressly that in settings, in fact players don't make any runs at all.

I really want to like this game as FIFA is also really pissing me off, so maybe someone can help me with the following problems I've found. I'm really not trying a wind up, it's just been really annoying me having recently bought the game.

- why do some players control the ball and temporarily become almost immobilised?

- Why doesn't the ball bobble? In fact, why do the ball physics one minute act like it's a lead weight running across the turf, but the next it's like a hot air balloon in the air?

- Why is it almost impossible to hit low shots? In fact, why do shots seem to randomly fly at 100mph then the exact same power make another shot dribble along the ground? 'Body position' my arse, if you're running in on goal without anyone near to tackle, you compose yourself, aim for the bottom corner, then it should always go low at least. Not one minute go low and weak, the next high and like a rocket. I scored an unstoppable screamer from about 35 yards in one game, right into the top corner, but rather than being an 'out of the seat' moment it felt really crap because it's not remotely what my controller actions told the game to do. I felt like the game just scored for me.

- why does the only goal the AI score on Pro level is from the stupid through pass that you can't intercept? I've so far only ever conceded a goal in this manner. The AI doesn't even seem to attempt to play any other way.

- why does the game repeatedly screw around with the cursor? It's a joke. I was running though on goal, only the keeper to beat, when the cursor was randomly taken away from me and he just stopped running and left the ball. So many times at the back it flicks between my players making me unable to get a simple ball. I've put the cursor to assisted, because I noticed that if you change it to manual, it pretty much plays the game for you. That's ridiculous.

- why is it possible that you can play what looks like a terrible through pass to absolutely no-one, yet the AI will move out of the path of the ball and let your player randomly run onto the pass, when he had absolutely no right to get there? That's just lazy AI.

Maybe I have these complaints because I'm crap at the game, I dunno. I admire all you guys who are enjoying the game because right now I'm thinking of selling it. I like how the passing has been improved, and this does take practice, but the new elements to the game are fairly easy to get the hang of. It's more the AI, the ball physics and the utterly random controls that seem to make this, for me, pretty terrible so far.

Oh and also, why, when your player sometimes runs onto the ball, does the game make him do a strange automated 'arc' around the ball like he's running into some strange invisible barrier around the ball? It's really offputting.

I think that's the main point of my dislike so far for the game, too much of it feels like you're only partially in control of what's going on. That and the bizarre animation/response glitches.

Trust me, it will all get better, much better.

You'll eventually be able to drible past people, control shots pretty much as you want them, learn to deal with pressure and player runs, etc.

For example, I don't even have problems with player switching and defending right now, one of the main gripes here, which I also had in the demo and in the beta.

A lot of your complaints are just frustration, I suggest you keep playing and trying out new things. Fiddle with the tactics menu and change your cursor to semi-assisted.

Oh and take your game online, you will learn plenty.

I just got the game and im having the same issues...

CPU seem to only be able to score from xavi type trough ball that my CB cant defend...and I just cant beat people in the wide area as I get bullied of the ball (fifa like) but we must understand its a new game and we got to learn it...I remember one year ago I had the same problem with pes 2010, as I coudlnt score on a regular basis for a week or two, Just get used to the game and we will eventualy get it right.

<snip>

I think a lot of us felt a bit like that when we started playing.

The thing about this game is that when you're not playing it well, it looks and feels bloody horrible. Until you get used to the feel and rhythm of taking first touches with L2, putting a bit of whip on passes and shots, knowing where and when to play a first time long pass or a little chipped through ball or a backheel, how to speed up and slow down play... until you get into the groove of all that, it can look a bit like a load of zombies crashing into each other with a ball bouncing around somewhere nearby.

I never thought of selling the game because I always sensed there was something great in there, but I had a few days where I was just thinking WTF, basically. Really frustrated, it didn't seem to look like football, everything felt weird and sluggish, no one making runs, CPU seemed unable to play properly etc etc.

What happens is, you persevere and quite quickly it all falls into place. Once you get the "feel" of it and start being able to do what you want, games begin to open up and feel much more realistic. You get that ebb and flow, passages of play start to make sense. You discover how to build a move, what you can and can't do. You learn to spot player runs, and how to move in order to make your teammates start running (they won't just bomb up the pitch like headless chickens unless you're using "quick counter" strategy, but they will move around more as you start to build up play). You realise that what feels like your players being stupid and immobile is actually a fairly realistic system to stop you pulling off inhuman twists and turns, and soon you work out how to move fluently within that system. Soon, you can create space for yourself by switching the ball from foot to foot, or jinking through a small gap, and so on and so on. You start to spot which teams will just ping long passes down the middle and which will try to play football against you (it's all in the "Management Edit" and "Team Style" settings, though of course Konami haven't bothered to make all of these accurate, and have set too many teams to "Long Ball", so you may have to change them for some teams, or wait for someone to post suggested changes on a forum like this... in the meantime I would suggest Porto as an opponent who try to play proper football).

Seriously, give it some time. There's a lot of depth in this game, and because of that it can seem quite weird until you get the hang of it. It's not a pick up and play thing like FIFA, where you go "wow" on your first game - it takes patience. The weird "restrictions" you're feeling are what give the game its realism. The problem is that when you start with this game you naturally try to play "through" them, rather than with them - and when you do that, what you see on your screen looks anything but realistic. And you're right, until the game clicks with you, it's not much fun. Once it does, it's amazing and you see all this stuff in a new light.

You're right about the cursor switching, though - and the odd bit of weird AI behaviour. Even those of us who are really, really into this game now will freely admit there are some fairly big annoyances. It ain't perfect, but what can you do?

they're all game features

That's the CPU I'd guess? Seriously, Konami? LOL

that same thing happened to me in master league yesterday

i was playing against Inter and they had Milito, Eto'o and Pandev as goalkeeper during the entire match

this is another bug to fix asap

Is it possible all the people to suffer this are using the same patch/OF?

I don't think so. Just shitty managerial A.I.

Very strange. I dont ever remember this happening any any PES game and I have played ML offine exclusively for years. If anything, this has always been PES strongest areas. I'm very shocked to be honest, something cant be right.

I think a lot of us felt a bit like that when we started playing.

I agree with much of what you say but you still ignore many of his points that have less to do with nuances of the game and more to do with technical shortcomings that Konami has yet to overcome.

I don't think anyone wants to argue that PES 2011 doesn't have great depth to it's gameplay, but at the same time the game suffers from being stuck in the last gen when it comes to such features as movement, animations, collision and ball physics, etc.

I'm loving this game for what it has to offer but in too many ways it's still stuck in the PS2 era, so I can understand his frustration. It's one thing to say someone hasn't played the game enough to "get it", but at some point we need to admit to PES 2011's shortcomings.

something cant be right.

Well that's why it's a bug, right?

About the newcomers, a lot of the frustration is because you still have the old PES mindset on, you have to undo it and start again... But even when you start enjoying or even loving the game there will still be frustrations, for sure.

@pere ubu

quick counter is a quick pressing after u loose the ball mainly in the opp. half
if u have the ball its not the function as u wrote above

what comes more near to this is maybe swap wings

Becasue it's a good indication to that you want to play the game as if it's a pure arcade game!

If your running around doing that and playing with big teams playing crazy football, no wonder you don't like the game!

:D ahahaha You serious?? All this mess is derived from one Rainbow??
OK, then do not do, and Roulette, or Flip-Flap, Step Over Fake,Front Flick, Inside Bounce, L Feint, Backheel Feint, Cross over turn and ect. Clearly the best football game for you is Soccer 89, because there are just two buttons, pass and shot! You're a genius. :WORSHIP:

Klash, I can read you like a book. Don't waste your time replying to this eejit. The rest of us all know that the rainbow was a hideous mistake by Konami and that anyone who uses it, even once, online, is a weapons grade cnut. So why get wound up arguing about it?

I've used the rainbow flick once, accidentally, when trying to use the sideways flick move (which is actually very realistic in my opinion) :P.

It worked and I skinned the defender, I then kicked the ball out of play on purpose as I felt like a cunt...

It really is a stupid, pointless and unrealistic addition to the game - the way the other tricks look, their success rates and their risk v reward ratio seems realistic to me.

Oh c'mon, the guy points out a bug in the game and he gets blasted for using a rainbow flick?

Talk about changing the conversation...

What's your point? We can see the bug - it's weird, it's bad, it's not something we can do anything about other than report it to Konami. It's not a gameplay issue that we can talk about rebalancing; it's a bug. The solution is to fix the bug. End of conversation.

The rainbow flick IS a gameplay issue. It is the scourge of all football games, and seeing it being wrongly implemented in a game that otherwise represents tricks fairly well is depressing. Seeing people use it and think it looks cool or flash is just as bad.

Amen.

Sorry Rom, wasn't my intention to single you out. My point was I felt bad for the guy, seeing as all he seemed to be trying to do was point out a bug, but instead of people acknowledging the bug the "cool thing" seemed to be call the guy out for using a rainbow trick.

Just annoys me when people with apparently honest intentions get vilified for doing something that's not kosher with the hardcore community. Who knows, maybe it was his first time trying out the trick?

Whether it's the FIFA or PES forums there seems to be a tendency to batten down the hatches and prepare the defenses whenever someone points out a valid issue with one of the games. I don't think that's fair and I don't see what's to be gained by alienating fans of the game. That's all.

My mate just scored a chip against me almost identical to the one Quagliarella scored against Slovakia at the World Cup .

He skipped the replay, so I couldn't save and upload it, but it looked seriously awesome, never seen anything like that in a football game before and I hadn't thought to try it myself (another FIFA habit of mine, avoiding chipping the keeper because it was an exploit).

Beats me.

Are Konami aware that the clock in MLO is an hour behind real life?

I'm on the worst run ever in MLO

lost probably 7 out of 10 games. Nothing is going right...

Could sell my whole team right now, if it weren't for commission :DD
