PES 2011 Demo impressions

My impressions of the demo....first and foremost it's seems as though it'll be a great game and IF online is up to par what with online ML it could be all kinds of epic because for me EA needs to sort Fifa out online because although that game plays a stable game once on the pitch it's everywhere else that renders Fifa unplayable online for me and they're nothing more than unpatched oversights by EA so there's an opportunity there for both companies to sort it out with regards to their online.....anyway back to the PES demo it's great because it's strangely addictive and to me it's got the feel of as if the PS2 PES games just jumped to next gen and a lot of that is to do with the animations and the familiar menu system....but the demo is not without it's flaws and I'm sorry but the current penalty system sucks balls bring back the old one if need be it wasn't broken...also is it just me or is the demo too easy ? Usually I find new PES games way too hard, but this demo AI is not clinical enough on Top Player.

I would disagree with that - PES 10 was much criticised but actually when you sit down and play it in great depth it is far better than fifa 10 ever was. Fifa gets scores based on reviews by people who have little interest in real football but just want to have a quick game and want something that is an entertaining action sport. This is an americanised mentality which has made american sports far different from football (association).

Actually an epic fail here, as our national past time, and 1/3 or our major sports is baseball. One would be hard pressed to call that an action sport.

It really helps no one to tell everyone what game was the 'purists' game. Loads of Pro-Evo junkies switched to Fifa (including myself) because they consider freedom of movement and manual controls to be just as important to pure football as everything else. And most of us will come back based on what game is best this year. I happen to love the demo, and am looking forward to the Fifa demo as well. What's the point of insulting Fifa fans as 'non-purists' when both games clearly had their problems last year?

Two questions: What are one-touch settings (in team management menu) does anyone know? Doesn't seem to do anything in the demo.

Also, do we know if we'll be able to edit attack/defense settings in the full version? I'm surprised we can't as it was in last year...

I am the well-known (now banned) martynneale from the fifa 10 forum and believe me as a gamer of more than 20 years worth of experience the fifa games especially fifa 10 are some of the worst that have ever been made. Fifa 10 plays like ice hockey and has a heavily americanised style of play with crunching unpunished tackles and repetitive unrealistic scoring patterns.

PES on the other hand plays like real football in most important aspects and 11 will be no exception. The crossing bug looks to be the most severe one but hopefully it can be fixed or has been exaggerated in terms of the way "green zone" of crossing works. Seabass is the purist and EA are the corporate juggernaut which needs to be stopped in its tracks.

It's posts like this that completely ruins discussion. Why is it someone criticizes PES and you respond by criticizing FIFA? Where does that get us? How does that help?

I don't get why some of you guys call someone a troll just cause he doesn't like the game and states why? Maybe he's wrong, or maybe he just has different tastes. Why's he automatically labelled a troll?

And wait, a post gets deleted because it blames the game on its Japanese developers, but it's okay to blame America for FIFA, even though the game is made in Canada and Rutter is English? EA needs to be stopped even though it puts out many quality games, and is not THAT far away from putting out quality football games?

You mention you have 20 years worth of experience - is that suppose to make your opinion worth more than others, or more correct than others? - but the maturity level of your argument is about the equivalent of 99 percent of the drivel you find in the FIFA forums, your post is just written better.

Rather than attacking people for having a differing opinion than yours, why not open dialog on the issues so we can help get the best football game possible?

I've played the demo many times yesterday and today, trying to like it. I've already said I love the new passing but the old PES problems continue to arise, GKs, refs, atmosphere, presentation etc, honestly i've scored too many headers from crosses and too many rebounds from poor GKs. Not my opinion, i've done it. You're finding it great and that's great for you but there might well be people who haven't played it yet wanting to know the other side of the story, not just your story.

I repeat this has nothing to do with Fifa. My opinion is standalone on PES11.

Fifa 10 has a lot of problems too, I find it far too easy to charge down a defender and run clean through on goal but i'll judge Fifa 11 when it comes out, they may have fixed it, who knows?

Wouldn't be like a Rangers supporter to demonstrate ignorance and stupidity in a public forum.

I thought Dave Rutter was Scottish ? Either way no matter I actually agree with that poster there are aspects of PES that do and always have mimicked the finer elements of real football way better than Fifa does currently or ever has....but saying that I've liked the recent Fifa games too and thought Fifa 10 was an epic improvement on Fifa 09 I felt it played much more fluidly and controlled - really looking forward to what should be 2 excellent football games for the first time, bring on the Fifa demo let's see what you got EA! Word of warning you'll need to bring your A game this year and from here on out because PES is getting it's essence back!

I guess because DarthKebab said the version of the game he recently played seemed to him to be more advanced than the demo. Plus I think some people want to believe that the little gripes people are having with the demo might not be there in the full version!

Its hilarious on here even when konami tell ppl its the final build there's still ppl who say no it cant be.
I can just imagine the postman getting pissed at seabass as he has to wait an extra 30 mins to pick up the gold copy for processing as he wants to add a bit more code lol.
This demo hasn't come out any later than any other demos for pes in the past.
Name one thing that was different from the Pes 2010 demo that was or wasn't in the original version of the game.
And not stuff even we can edit ourselves like squads etc.
Konami are rightfully proud of this game so why not come out and build excitement by stating no we want the final code released as its great etc.
Even they know of the debates sane ppl have with fanboys about crap demos not being final build in the hope for a completely different game come launch.
PS the game is good and enjoy it, just don't be a mug and believe everything u read.

Ps its not only Konami its EA with fifa its pretty much almost every game demo ever released unless its a beta etc. There have been exeptions but PES has always been the same game from demo version.

Just scored my first alright goal after about 20 matches on the demo. Never realised how hard PES is play after not playing the game for so many years. I converted to FIFA soon as PES hit next gen.

Was struggling to even get a chance of scoring on Professional but switched it so Top Player and finding it a lot easier to find space and so on.

Definately getting it this year though after being pretty impressed with the demo, takes me back to them good old PS2 days

And other videos jump with the chest on the ground like a volleybal player. Does Konami's guys even look a real match or maybe talk with a professional goalkeaper? This is a very old issue and they simply don't never fix it.

Sorry, but it's unnaceptable on a NG game. You don't see this kind of bizarre moves on MLB The Show or NBA 2K series.

I agree with the point on goalkeepers. It's the only major issue that still hasn't been addressed.
There's no way they've mo-capped any goalkeeping movements, because they look so wooden and move in a different manner to the outfield players. It's sad when the rest of the game looks so good, and it does take away from the feeling of beating them.
If they moved realistically, goals would be so much more rewarding, and the saves would be something to behold.

The games you quoted have their issues, especially The Show, but not going to get off topic here.

IMO, the only way konami can sort the goalkeeper situation is making them overrated (in terms of balance and reaction) so that at-least hey make some good and unexpected saves.

Unless you're simply referring to this year's game, and the lack of time to address the issue, I think they need to mo-cap for them rather than paper over the cracks with cheats like that.

The player switching really is awful at times, I can see it being really frustrating in the full game, especailly in big games in ML or online. Can someone that played the beta tell me if the player switching was as bad or any worse than it is in the demo, seems like something that should of been pointed out to them, vehemently.

but what i will say is it's an improvement on pes2010

keepers are improved IMO, some animations are still a little rigid

like any pro evo it takes time to get used to so can't really make a valid opinion of the game in just a few days

bored already of the same old teams in the demo so massively looking forward to the full version

played 10 games so far, really like it, every game is different again, unlike pes 2010...

the keepers need some more animations imo, look a bit awkward, and the crosses seem way too fast, that was better in the beta, but overall this game is 100x better than 2010, looking forward to really enjoy this game after the release!

oh and defense is even better than in the beta version, you don't have to press x all the time to get the ball, you just need to position correctly, wasn't like that in the beta!

I have the slightest idea why they removed the old manual switching. The one we have now is difficult to keep up with.

Also agreed GKs need more animations. They're definitely better than 2010's and seen some very good animations but some still need addressing.

I like the free kick trajectories - it really looks like the ball is being struck sweetly.

I havn't really seen a placed/curved free kick yet though, I'm just hoping that Beckham-esque free kicks are possible, I loved the difference between Beckham and Lampard's free kicks on PES5/6 but when I played PES 2010 I could never really get much curl.

They are still there Rob, in fact more so. I think there was about 8 or more free-kick styles in PES 2010. These range from close range specialists that perform the sort of free-kick your talking about, open bodied, with emphasis on whip and bend, ala Becks. Then the power based strike akin to Lamps and Gerrard. They are all there, and it's fun learning each technique and how much power, bend and dip is required for each stance. I'm a real dead-ball freak on PES, I've put hours of practice in on the training ground to hone my game in this area.

Fortunately someone on here was kind enough to offer their PSN+ account to download the demo. I won't name names to save their pm box from overflowing with requests but you know who you are and it's very appreciated.

Background
Been a FIFA player since PES360 and FIFA07, thought neither were especially good. PES was pretty much the ps2 version but without all the editing stuff which made the ML horrible. Ended up playing it for about 2 months after getting it cheap at xmas. FIFA07 showed it's potential with the new engine but was still flawed and lasted me a month. No need to talk about PES08/09. FIFA improved till 09, which I spent a whole year on MM till FIFA10 was released. That was a big disapointment as the MM was a bug ridden sh!tfest and they managed to screw up their physics engine by introducing 360 control. This meant that players started to skate around, something which was far less apparent in 07-09. FIFA10 lasted me 1,5 month before I got sick of the nonsense in MM. Bought PES2010 out of curiousity and liked the basis from which Konami were working (player individuality, 1st touch, tactics, etc), however the lack of transition animations and the rigidity of the game in general just made it pretty impossible to play for me from FIFA. Bought WC2010, again cheap as I didn't want to fill EA's pockets anymore then needed and enjoyed it for a month. It seemed a bit more "grounded" to control compared to FIFA10, however the lack of decent AI (read: team formation and tactics) started to piss me off. Then came the news from both games, and I feel that FIFA11 just hasn't done enough for me as a MM/ML player to keep me interested. PES2011 on the other hand seemed to have improved my major problems from 10 so I am looking at it as a potential replacement for FIFA11.

So today I have managed about 10 matches,....and it's a steep learning curve! Wow, very tough to get into. Being a FIFA player for so long has really made it hard to step back over, but I'm trying. Played a mix of the Libertadores and the "Ba"'s.

Good
-Animations have improved quite substantially but are still short of FIFA's, no surprise there. I do find that they need just a bit more transitions as it sometimes goes from really good to poor and that is mostly down to lacking the in-between angle's for me, but they are getting there.
-Graphics are good, lighting looks spot on, game and replay camera's are really good and I can't find a fault with them. Even when some of the replay cams actually miss part of the flight of the ball I can't complain as that would happen in real life aswell. The thunderbolt in combination with a sideline cam for example. Players are easily noticable (physical difference) although I think FIFA's faces have become better, not that I personally care about that.
-Passing is good with the powerbar really making a difference, especially when over powering a pass to someone with a poor first touch! However as a "D-pad Dino" I was never likely to really notice the new freedom.
- Defensive system, admittedly the way I play/defend I don't notice it much. I don't tend to go in or pressure but block passing/movement channels. So it's essentially FIFA's jockey combined with the X to tackle. A good and natural development for me, but something I tended to do anyway.

Great
-Tactics, they work great. Love the dynamic tactics to change your team automatically depending on the score and also love the custom tactic A/B button! I've been moaning about this for a while with FIFA but it's great to be able to override the dynamic tactics to go ultra defensive when 1-0 up with 10min to go. And what's even better is that they work! Was 1-0 up in a Libertadores match-up and decided I would stop playing and just park the bus. It was great to see my defense staying near their area even when I countered, or tried to. The opposition just couldn't get through and I "hung on" for the win. I say "hung on" but it was pretty comfortable with my excellent tactical set up.
-Player individuality, nothing new, but it's so noticable whether playing with a slow defender or angile winger. Which brings me on to....

It's difficult to say exactly what it's down to, could be a lack of transition animations or just down to player stats but I find I'm having a lot of difficulty controling players when in possesion and wanting to make short turns. Even with the likes of Messi and using R2 it feels too "loose".
Another element I'm finding a bit poor is the defensive AI when a throughball is passed through the center, half the time I find myself expecting the defender to just stick his toe out to change trajectory or stop the ball but he does nothing and the striker runs onto it between my defenders. The ball just gets too close without him doing anything.
The net, when it moves too much get's a weird effect which is quite dissapointing to me.

Conclusion so far
Bit of a mixed bag at the moment and will stick with it till release. I love quite a lot of aspects of the game; the tactics, the player differences, the presentation (camera's), the pace but at the same time it feels slighlty unresponsive which is due to a combination of factors for me; transitions, player having too big a touch in general. It feels very much like FIFA08, not literaly but the phase in which the game finds itself. A very solid base with good aspects but a couple that need to be improved to really make it the game of choice. I'll stick with it, as I hope the responsiveness niggles are mostly down to getting accustomed with the game as the ML sounds great! At the moment I think I might be getting both games.

It's going to take alot more than 10 games bud, stick with it. Update your review in 3 days or so, once you have fully acclimated. The response issues you feel are natural, it's just not what you have become accustom to. Also, try to sprint as little as possible.

Had quite a few matches on it now, mostly against friends and have really enjoyed it. Got bored on 1 player as its just a pointless exhibition but played it on speed +2 and it's much more exciting.
Player select and the camera are too attacking, you need to be the man behind the ball or pass backwards quite a lot to get anywhere. They've changed the full game from the demo every year so hopefully they're looking at that now.

Cant wait for the eighth

Recognising cultural influences and being a racist are two different things my friend - you need to be able to distinguish the two.

I have spent the last year making constructive criticisms and insightful observations about fifa but unfortunately sensible voices are drowned out on the fifa forums by the heavily biased and intolerant people who post on those forums. My 20 years worth of gaming experience tells me that pes is a better simulation of football than fifa - and most of the knowledgeable gamers on the forums say the same.

Yeah I'm hoping the response issue's are more down to getting used to it. I also think it's down to one-off games. You never really get to know your players, especially as I tend to mix it up with the teams as it's a bit boring constantly having to play the same opposition if you only use one team. Do agree with you that playing with the liber teams is more fun. I had a couple of matches where I was just keeping possesion and it was really good and natural, then when you tried to switch play up with some fast movement you are not fully there yet which is frustrating but understandable. Pleased with it so far though, although I think 2012 with some more polish with the transitions will mean the good ol'days for PES again!
