Next Gen Consoles

Can't have helped, but surely the PS4 box it comes in has some kind of protection as well?

Yeah, but packing it loosely means that it then moves around more and gets banged about more. If you just pack the regular boxes next to each other and makes sure there is no room for movement that will be fine. Placing a box in a box and leaving enough room within that to move about means it will get tossed about a lot more and cause damage.

Based on reading a dozen or so of the complaints, I don't think it is an issue with damage incurred through shipping. Since most people's consoles are turning on, but then bricking after some use, I think it is more like a software/firmware issue which is certainly not surprising given Sony's track record when it comes to updates/security/networking.

But again, no reason to speculate. I'm sure we'll all know in a few weeks.

I don't think so either. I don't think anyone really knows right now - like you said, it's too early - but if I had to guess I think there's some real heat issues with this system. For example, there's a lot of us with systems that are really loud when the fan is running at full power, and it doesn't seem like anyone really knows what's normal and what's not.

I'm not techie enough to know whether the heat/fan issues are connected to the failures, or if they're separate issues. At the moment I'm just trying to figure out if mine is "normal" or not.

Well Xbox 360 problem was the heat not dispersing thus heating the GPU up and frying it.

RROD galore

So yeah it could be the heat causing problems.

Btw I know it isn't Sony making them i meant if they didn't scrimp on the people they chose to make them there might not be a problem

I'm going to keep mine up until launch so I have the fullest picture before deciding. Not looking too good though.
The amazon shipping thing... That could explain why there are so many bad reviews on there but no real uproar elsewhere, like x amount of gamers with broken systems who bought them from another place.
But then some report no hard drive in their console, others with what looked like screwdriver stab marking over the hdmi ruining it and others saying the fan doesn't move and finding out it wasn't connected. That looks like the sabotage could be true.

Maybe it's a lot of both and the usual failure rate combined ?

Does anyone know if you can save gameplay footage to your hdd and then copy to USB/ pc to upload or edit yourself later?
I don't care for uploading to Facebook. I'd rather stick it on YouTube.

I hadn't heard about the console getting so hot. But yes, if that is happening, heat issues would absolutely explain these types of problems.

So the PS3 looks like a George Foreman grill and now they have gone 1 better than looks and made it so you can actually cook on it as well.

I'm not sure the units are getting all that hot, but loads of people are reporting fans running really loud, so I was just connecting the dots. Some people are saying their fans run continuously; other like myself experience the fan running loudly only intermittently.

I've noticed with my unit that it's very quiet running FIFA, and I'm now wondering whether the loud fan was just during the mandatory game install. I seemed to notice it the most when playing Killzone (which has a larger install). I'll have to check again how that runs later, though I can't really be bothered atm 'cause FIFA is a blast and Killzone kinda sucks.

Don't mean to gloat but I'm glad I didn't buy a launch console. While the numbers are probably relatively small and the next batch of consoles that leave the factories will be solid, I recommend people cancel pre-orders, to be honest.

Well I don't mean to gloat either but I've been having an absolute blast playing FIFA 14 on the PS4. As a huge football fan, it's worth my pre-order alone.

Just because a few hundred, or even a few thousand, cases have made a terrible, yet relatively isolated, problem big news for those paying close attention does not mean it's not worth buying a next gen console. Besides, you'd have to wait quite a while before the next version of consoles make it through production and out to retail.

To be honest I'm already expecting mine not to work, but Shopto offer to collect any faulty PS4s from your door for free if they break down within a year, so that's good.

Aren't the PS4 boards made by Foxconn?
I know PC users avoid Foxconn like the plague as they manufacture cheap and nasty boards, but Foxconn also produce the majority of parts that go into the iPhone and an awful lot of mass produced electrical boards.

As for the red line of death, that does seem like a severe lack of cooling, but once again it is the consumers fault for placing the console to close to a wall, as we all know for safe usage your meant to keep it in the fridge during gaming activity.

I am still keeping both my PS4 pre-orders for now, as surely 1 out 2 should work.

I understand what you're saying and I'm happy for you that you got a good console. Would be very unhappy though if I ended up with A DOA console. Happy to wait until the wrinkles are smoothed out for now.

I know, I was so certain mine was going to be a brick out of the box.

I could still eat my words, who knows. But it's covered by warranty and you'd think with the amount of internet buzz these issues are getting that Sony will be on top of things. It's not as if getting a DOA console means you're shit out of luck.

I can understand holding off because the launch titles are so weak but if there's a game, like FIFA, you want to play, I don't see the point in waiting.

I had a 360 that was purchased three years after launch die on me within a year. So it's not as if waiting is any guarantee either.
