Next Gen Consoles

There are some Small Form Factor PC cases. The BitFenix Prodigy is quite popular from what I've read, for example.

The Alienware x51 isn't much bigger than a 360 and the upcoming Steam Machines appear to have crammed high level graphics cards into console sized cases.

They do. I have one and never had heat problems with it either.

None are as small as the PS4

The size of the case is a factor but it's all about airflow. A small case with good airflow will work perfectly well. I'm not sure how the consoles manage this as they don't appear to have intake and exhaust fans on the case like a PC does.

My PC is smaller than a PS4. I have a Dell Hybrid. I haven't got a tape measure on me but I'd say my PC is def smaller. If I'm wrong I'm wrong but from just looking at it I'd be surprised if I was. Anyway...

Yes it might be smaller laptops are smaller than the PS4, but none have the same power graphically as a PS4.
The PS4 doesn't have any proper airflow throughout, it is just a big heatsink and fan, but the fan is just cooling the heatsink so where does the hot air go apart from just linger around like a bad fart.

Blows out the back like the PS3 (and a fart) doesn't it?

You need something to move the air through the console.

I thought this big fan did that.

Does it sit flat on the desk/table or is there some room underneath? Thinking of putting small rubber pads onto the corners of mine so it's raised to allow air underneath, when there's a "grey" stand available I'll probably buy one and mod it so that the side that's on the bottom still has air coming into it.

It sits flat, no bumpers or anything to give it even the slightest lift.

But I think people are more worried about heat than they should be. I've regularly got up and checked my PS4, resting a hand on it and a hand on my cable box that sits next to it, and they both felt equally warm. Also, my unit is sitting on shelf that has a back to it (something I intend to change), so airflow isn't even as efficient as it probably ought to be.

The caveat to that is I was only playing FIFA, and the game was already installed. It might run hotter during the mandatory installation.

I think that as long as you don't have a defective unit - which is probably insanely unlikely - heat isn't much an issue. Still, you can be sure I'll be paying attention to my unit at least for the near future just to double-check.

**Edit: Also, that link mentions the PS4 being wobbly when sitting horizontal. This is not an issue at all for me.

I have a pS3 slim and it's very quiet, even when the fan turns on. How does the PS4 compare to that?

I'm not sure yet. When playing FIFA, it's extremely quiet.

On the other hand, when I was first trying Killzone, the fan was loud - loud enough for me to hear it even though I was wearing a headset.

However ,that might have just been during the mandatory game installation. I've heard plenty of people say the fan runs loudly during install but then all is quiet the rest of the time.

I honestly can't really be bothered to play Killzone, but next I do I'll check to see if it's running quieter now that I know it's running from the HD. Like I said, when playing FIFA it's just about as quiet as my ps3.

I have to take back what I said: when playing FIFA, my PS4 isn't quite as quiet as my PS3 slim, but somewhere in between it and my 360. I don't hear it over the game audio but during quiet moments I can certainly hear it running.

Angry Joe Show
Good God. Do not look at the Amazon Reviews for the PS4. You know people can just make up whatever the hell they want there right?

Aren't some supermarkets though also doing pre-orders?

I will be pretty surprised if you can pick up any next gen system before Christmas if you have not pre-ordered, as any additional stock of consoles anywhere will be very quickly snapped up by staff and taken straight down the local CEX.

Interesting to see how the achievements are laid out. Wonder if they are screen grabs from the moment the acheivement unlocked? Little video clip would be cool - too much to ask? :)

EDIT: Just had a quick look around and it seems the achievements do record a clip when you unlock them!
