Next Gen Consoles

I just got a mail from Xbox Live rewarding me with, I imagine, the full version of Killer Instinct.

Not bad at all.

Interesting article:

The development house behind Final Fantasy decided to get into cloud gaming because they didn’t see the technological advancements they’ve been expecting in the field. “[Flare] separates computer processing from rendering processing. We separate the CPU from the GPU. Some games are compute heavy, and some games are rendering heavy. And you can’t really balance them when they running on one, single processing unit. But Flare introduces an exponentially scalable system that isn’t possible with streaming games.”

I imagine this is what the Xbone's trying to achieve.

It's funny how opinions can differ, I much prefer DS3 to 360 controller. I found precision movement near the centre of the stick to be all over the place on 360. That said I'm sure both new controllers will be awesome, but l really like the look of DS4.

Well, my choice is made, no backing out of my pre-order now - I decided to pay up front for my PS4 with Killzone and FIFA 14 last night. They said they wouldn't charge me until it was despatched the night before, but I can just imagine waiting for it to arrive in the mail on my day off from work only to find some issue with payment or something meaning it wasn't shipped :P

At least this way I know it'll definitely be shipped before Nov 29!

How does it compare to the 360 controller? Main thing that worries me is how loose the analogue sticks are as they're terrible on the DS3 IMO.

I like you think the Xbox 360 controller is probably the best controller every made, but after trying the DS4 I instantly loved it.
Mind you I did only play a handful of games for a short period of time, and the main gripe I have with the DS3 is the fact after playing FIFA on it for about 30 minutes+ my hands start hurting due to the awkwardness of the controller and it not sitting very nice in the hand, where the Xbox 360 controller you can use all day.
Unfortunately I didn't get to play anything for a 30 minute plus period so don't know the long term effects of using the controller but short term the DS4 was definitely the best controller of the two.

LOLZORZZZZ!!!

Xbox One cloud updates may reboot your console mid-session, says Microsoft exec

Xbox One’s cloud framework will update on a regular basis and this could lead to the system rebooting mid-session, according to Xbox Live lead program manager at Microsoft John Bruno.

Bruno hosted a presentation at GDC Next yesterday entitled “On Demand Compute: Power For Games,” and IGameResponsibly was apparently there to hear what he had to say.

During the session, Bruno said that cloud-based system Xbox Live Compute has been in development for 18 months and is derived from Windows Azure tech. He conceded that the tech initially received criticsm from publishers such as Ubisoft early on, but that Respawn Entertainment was an easier sell.

Now, the studio is using Xbox Live Compute to offload many facets of Titanfall’s online play to the cloud, such as NPC AI, an more.

Touching on the issue of the Xbox One’s cloud-based updates Bruno explained, “Once in a while, rather frequently actually, the host OS will require an update, meaning the physical machine is going to get rebooted, whether your code is running or not. That’s a problematic thing for a game, and is oftentimes is in the middle of a multiplayer session, we’ve worked very hard to overcome that, but that’s not to say it’s going to be a reality in every case.”

This could be very problematic indeed. The site pressed Bruno on this issue and asked how disruptive these updates will be given Titanfall’s status as an online-only release. They also asked him about the worst-case scenario of Microsoft’s cloud servers failing altogether.

He replied, “I can’t answer that. I don’t know what the guys over at Titanfall have built into their game. It’s up to the game developer. If they want to rely more on our XBLC service, we’re happy to support that. We do provide a platform for them to persist data, but that’s up to the developer to utilize that.”

It begs the question of Titanfall’s performance without the cloud. Will it still run without cloud servers?

That's my biggest issue too. In fact, I think I've read more DS4 impressions than any other type since it's really my only reservation about the system.

The good news is that I've yet to read a poor review of it, and even those who've preferred the 360 controller are saying they really like the DS4.

I hope Microsoft presses forward with their innovation. Sony is getting huge plaudits for playing it 100% safe while Microsoft is getting pilloried for trying to offer new features when nobody knows if they will work or how useful they will be.

Set-top box replacement? Console multi-tasking? Kinect gaming? Digital marketplace and sharing? Cloud computing?

Will any of these features be gaming "must haves?". I think the new game play recording feature offered by both consoles is great and will be something we all realized we always wanted. But, will gamers/developers be savvy enough to take these other tools from Microsoft and make something we gamers didn't know we wanted but now can't do without? Or will the dust settle a year or two from now and the PS4 will be king solely for having slightly better graphics?

I'm so surprised at the general consensus being that all "gamers" want in this next generation is slightly better graphics and the ability to trade-in used disks. I'm quite clearly in the minority (at least of who is being the loudest) as a supporter of Microsoft wanting to try something new with a nearly all digital marketplace and mandatory cameras and internet to take my video gaming into the future. I want what I was promised in "Back to the Future 2"... innovation (and hoverboards). All these naysayers and doomsday predictors for the Xbox One because Microsoft has dared to try something different are just standing in the way of progress.

Seriously, proclaiming the PS4 the "Winner" of the next-generation because of a slightly higher resolution on some launch games is laughable. It may become the "winner" if everyone gets scared off by the threats of the Luddites in the gaming media who get page views off of "XBone" hit pieces but on a gaming website such as this we should all be applauding Microsoft for trying to innovate and hoping that a better way to play games for everyone results. You don't have to buy the damn thing if you don't want to, but enough arguing that the "XBone" has shite graphics and then posting comparison videos where everything looks of the same general quality. If graphics are that important to you then go get a PC which will make either console look drastically inferior.

If it allows devs to add many other elements that aren't possible on current gen and keep a constant framerate without stutters or screen tearing then I don't see a problem really.

That would be a valid excusable for the 360, PS3 or WiiU but not for a so-called "next-generation" console. To still have 720p/30fps games in 2013 is just ridiculous, honestly. And the worse part is that even with 720p there are reviews saying that D3 still have framedrops, specially when you are on high speed car.

Who are you mad at?

No matter what power of any console or PC, a developer could add graphical effects that slow it down to a crawl. It's on the developer to decide what the final product is going to look like. I'd hazard that Dead Rising 3 is going to look and play great. If not, then it's the developers fault.

Great post

For me, there is no excuse for that when the graphics look like current-gen..

I am not mad, i would be mad if i had pre-ordered an X1, based on all the shit that´s coming from under the M$ embargos rug.

But they don't? I haven't seen any that do so far. Maybe you mean there's not that huge a leap? In that case it is expected from launch games. We'd have to wait maybe 2-3 years to start seeing them games that would make our jaws drop.

Yea, I prefer the DS3 as well although I like the triggers better on the 360 pad. Hoping the triggers are much better on the DS4.

True, but hardware is also a constraint.. optimized software/game engine and maximized hardware utilization. we cannot take one of them out of the equation.

However, I think that to certain extent, there are effects in a game which can drop the frame per second without giving significant and very noticeable image quality difference, especially during gameplay.

For example, Antialiased. In my opinion 2xMSAA vs 4xMSAA will give 10-20% frame drop, and the difference is very subtle in 1080 resolution. Not to mention, we have FXAA that cost virtually no frame drop.

Games will look and run better with time but I don't think it will be such a marked difference as with previous console generations. Just a hunch based on my feeling that these consoles are under-powered right off the bat, and also because the PC-like architecture will make coding for these machines much simpler than in the past. The limits of these machines will be found quite quickly.

Killzone,Destiny,The Division and maybe 2K14 look stunning man..DR3 looks exactly like this gen and even so it's f..ing 720p and 30 fps..WTF:RANT:

I really hope that in this coming generation, we start so see a much more widespread implementation and improvement of animation systems such as NaturalMotion's Euphoria - the one seen used in most of Rockstar's games this gen from GTA IV through to GTA V.

Most games still rely massively on canned animations and lifeless ragdolls as opposed to giving characters proper physics and behaviours. It would be a great advancement for gaming in general if these sort of systems were to become more commonplace.

I think it also depends on which perspective of MS you subscribe to, I was in agreement with their sell-on policy because it I think devs should get the money from 2nd hand sales instead of the likes of Game, but at the same time I don't trust the market (i.e. Sony and MS....and no-one else) to price accordingly.

Which brings me to my mistrust, I don't believe MS are doing anything that will significantly improve gaming or are introducing anything that is really meaningfull (and the same goes for Sony). Nor do I think that is their aim, they have seen what iTunes is doing for Apple and are trying to crowbar a similar system into the gaming sector with the consumers being asked to pay for it with no competition in place once you have bought into the xbox. Sony are just as bad imo, you only have at look at their pricing policy for online games!

However for me the difference is I don't have to buy into it [read: kinect] with Sony, and I'm getting a cheaper and more powerfull games machine for it.

For those who want an integrated system that seamlessly goes from tv to gaming to tablets ect I think the xbox is the only valid choice. A mate of mine has a windowsphone and surface and he loves the way those are all going to integrate into a single unified system.

As for the kinect clip posted earlier, the question at the end of the article is: "Kinect justified?" Uhh, no. You could just as easily use a free qr reader on your smartphone to do the same and link it to your ms account. No need for a 100e add-on....and you could save the planet by being able to print it on a smaller piece of paper.

"Microsoft, destroying our natural planet to justify a Kinect!"

:P
