MMA thread

I checked last night Coopz, but I dont have any invites left. I gave the last one I had to Vondave. I'll enquire about getting some more. Alternatively, keep checking the site for the option to sign up for free. Its www.mma-torrents.com ( I cant access the site from work.)

Ah i already used that site but havnt been able to log in for a few weeks so they must have deleted my account for not using it

Its the Newsgroups fault that i didn't check the site regularly as well

Thanks anyway ill get on the hunt for a new invite :)

There were 3 or 4 impressive performances and some TKO's/KO's they are worth talking about

I guess we just have different options on what good fights are :)

Strikeforce STILL isn't available to download! Pisses me off that UFC events are dumped quickly but Strikeforce takes a day or so to turn up.

Its always on the Newsgroup the morning after its aired

as for the show

That's why Nick Diaz is my favourite fighter

Shit talker who backs it up and who wants to fight, he has an excellent chin, just keeps coming at you and his boxing is a joy to watch and his BJJ is probably better than his stand-up so that's saying something

Now that was a better event compared to the UFC one.

Walker is becoming a bit of a favourite of mine, and obviously Diaz is just quality. Jacare a little boring, kinda felt sorry for Lawler as he was doing alright especially with the escapes.

Can't wait for UFC 126, that's one I'm definitely staying up for. Even the undercard looks great!

Big UFC card this weekend

Silva
Belfort
Griffin
Frankiln
Jones
Torres
Cerrone

and more including a couple of Brits, can't wait.....

I cant either Coopz, it's a superb card, I'll be staying up for this to watch it live with the missis. Paul Kelly and Paul Taylor always represent the UK well, even in defeat. In fact, I hope they show the Paul Taylor fight as I love watching him, he is never in a dull fight and he is absolutely relentless. Bader v Jones is a real acid-test for both 'undefeated' fighters.

Just been checking out UFC 130, thats another card already stacked and still only half complete.

Champ Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard*
UFC Lightweight Championship
* Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Thiago Silva*
* Frank Mir vs. Roy Nelson*
* Thiago Alves vs. Rick Story*
* Stefan Struve vs. Travis Browne*
* Wanderlei Silva vs. Brian Stann*

:WOOT:

UFC is boring the fuck out of me lately. I thought the whole of last night was very average.

Yep, not a great event again really. Nobody seemed to really want it, instead preferring to stand off and be cautious.

The Silva v Belfort fight, it was over a minute and a half before someone even bothered with an attacking threat!

Shitting hell what a kick!!! Perfect.

Not a great event overall but some decent knockouts. Silva is the real deal, he may be boring at the start of fights but he certainly finishes them!

If your a counter striker what can you do if they don't attack?

I don't understand why they boo Silva either. Well i do, its because he hasn't attacked as much lately (has he ever gone balls to the wall without they other guy attacking?) but like i said above its because he's a counter striker don't they understand that? Plus why should he make fights? He's the once with the belt it's up to them to stop him but they don't dare do that because his counter striking is just unbelievable

UFC fans seem to be as fickle as football fans judging by the crowds reactions

Oh and that's twice in just over a month i have been gob smacked by something that's happened in a fight

what next.....

Fair point about him being a counter striker, Coopz. But I just don't think Silva is much fun to watch for the most part, which is odd. Because when he finishes, it's pretty spectacular. But for the rest of the fight, he's just entertaining enough. And as much as we like to see knockouts/subs, we also like to enjoy the fight leading up to that point.

Well, I do anyway :)

Yeah we all like a good scrap with both of them going for it and Silva will do that but they have to engage first so he can pick the slightest hole in there stand up and have his way with them (watch him vs Griffin and you will see what i mean, matrix style dodging haha)

When he fought Leites and Maia he took the piss out of them dropping his guard, sticking his chin out, dancing in front of them, even doing weird shit on his knees at one point to try and force them to attack but they still didn't take the bait and thats no fault of there own beucase they know he is the best counter striker going

So really its a lose lose situation for him. If he attacks he can get KO'ed or taken down and lose his title, if he waits for an attack people say he is boring if they dont play along

What can you do, even Vitor Belfort was scared to engage so that says alot

True. The Griffin fight was by far the best of his recent fights but the ones against Leites, Maia and Sonnen to a point weren't up to much. And then the fight against Belfort ... it was a supreme finish, just world class and there's not much that can be said. But when you're looking forward to a fight so much and you keep getting that build-up hyping it, and it's over like that ... it's just a big let-down, you know?

I saw Sherdog were talking about Silva fighting GSP at some point and saying it would be a mistake for GSP as Silva is naturally heavier and it'd be an unfair fight. But surely GSP is the best person to actually challenge Silva? In fact, is there ANYONE left now who can go against him with a realistic chance of winning (Sonnen came close, to be fair).

It just seems that the likes of Silva and GSP are going to keep those belts forever because nobody's even remotely close to being up to their skill level. So when they fight now, especially with Silva, I'm not going to be able to get half as hyped as I should be to see fighters of their skill level.

Where's the future? And how quickly can they progress?

Is Jon Jones v Silva a possibility at some point? At least we know Jones definitely would attack.

Speaking of Jones, thoughts on him fighting Rua? Now that should be a fight that lives up to the hype!

If JJ can keep it standing then I think his unorthodox striking will keep Rua at bay. Not sure if it goes to ground though...

I think Silva would destroy GSP tbh. He would dominate the stand-up and even if he got taken down he wouldn't be able to do what Sonnen did

We will see how good GSP is after he faces Shields a top Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter, he was shit in his first UFC fight (due to the weight loss apparently) but has looked amazing on the ground when i have watched him at Strikeforce in the past but will he be able to take GSP down in the first place?

Jones vs Rua will be brilliant

While Rua looks good i think Bones Jones looks better but he hasn't fought anyone anywhere near the pedigree Rua has so Rua may well dominate him because its a massive step up for Jones

BTW its Fedor vs Bigfoot Silva this weekend with the Heavyweight tournie kicking off, Silva is gonna get KTFO

Its 2 fights on each card to start off. One this weekend and the other god knows when because its Henderson headlining the next one in march

After that i guess they will string out the remaining 2 fights as main events on separate cards then have the final at the end of the year

Strikeforce M1 Global event was very good! Definitely watch it of you haven't already!

Fedor got fucked up! Antonio Silva was just too big, powerful and clever for him. Good stoppage by Mirogliotta IMO. Fedor's whole face was a mess, let alone his eye!

The other fights were good too, really looking forward to the next Strikeforce event now.

Agreed, Tim. Was a good event overall.

Fedor looked really one-dimensional and didn't seem that bothered to be there or bothered that he lost (never thought I'd say that). Silva was just too big and dominant in both rounds.

Yep, enjoyed the event too. Loved the last fight as well. And loved Mauro's comment about Christina Aguilera ::LMAO:
