but you've spent your whole life living in his shadow,

If im honest I would be shitting it if this was sometime last season but in football 3 months or even 6 months is a long time. Rooney currently this season has contributed 1 goal which was from the penalty spot and our attack has been fine this season, were not really suffering in that department because Berbatov, Nani along with cameo's from Hernandez have provided that (Yes our finishing off teams has been a bit naive but that's not down to lack of chances). Im not saying Rooney is rubbish or that we don't need him because hes probably the best player we have when on form but what it says it we can cope in that area without needing him.
Personally im more worried about us replacing Scholes (and if we have the funds for it even!) so if we were to sell Rooney and bring in say someone like Banega and no striker (like we did when we sold Ruud and bought in Carrick) and let the young attacking talent in house develop I wouldn't be that worried.
If we can manage to do both then brilliant but for some reason Rooney leaving doesn't bother me as much as Scholes hanging up his boots and not replacing him.
P.S Is it ok to start calling Nani World Class yet and being up their with the top bracket of players?

Last season Rooney was just a finisher. Almost all his goals were scored with just one touch; a header, a tap in or whatever and every single one was from inside the area. That's a lot easier to replace than a player like Messi who picks it up anywhere, goes past 2 players and curls into the top corner from 20 yards. Without Valencia, Giggs, Berbatov, Nani, Scholes etc etc etc he wouldn't have scored many goals AT ALL, because like I said before, the rest of his play was pretty average for the most part. I'm not being bitter, I said this months ago too, you can search the thread.
His role was overstated last season, he was brilliant at times and his goalscoring was fantastic but IMO he's not as important as has been made out.
This season we've been written off already and we haven't even lost yet! Fair enough we've not been great but give me one game where we were the worst team? Apart from Sunderland we've pretty much deserved to win every game and the only reason we haven't is because of stupid individual errors, collective switching off and inability to kill games off. It's entirely psychological.
If Nani had've scored that penalty against Fulham and Van Der Sar holds the ball against WBA then we'd be 2nd, one point behind Chelsea. It's no where near as bad as is being made out.
We've not missed Rooney one bit this season, we've been scoring fine. Nani, Berbatov and now potentially Hernandez are showing they can be matchwinners too.
Despite all the media and fan hype football's not just about individual star players, it's a team game and any player can be replaced. Arsenal had 5 different scorers tonight, in my opinion that's much more healthy than relying on one guy to get all the goals.

totaly agreed. just look how useless he has been when he plays for england. why? because without the service, Rooney is not all that great
Wouldn't want him to leave. I hope they sort it out and he stays.
There was a good discussion on about the Rooney situation on Sky Sports News last night. It was Paul Merson, Gary Megson, Charlie Nicholas & Phil Thompson.
Merson was saying that last season Rooney said he was happy to stay at the club for life, and that looking at it there must be something already lined up. Why else would you come out and say you want to leave United now when the transfer window is closed?
Apparently he is fed up with carrying the team (but like Jumbo said, he wouldn't have scored that many without the service, mainly from Valencia). Merson believed that that's the kind of pressure you thrive on, and anyway, if he went anywhere else it would be the same expectations. If he went to City, Chelsea, Madrid or anywhere else he would be the main striker and be expected to lead the line.
Thompson mentioned that as much as it hurt him to say it, Rooney is at possibly the biggest club in the world, and is the star player. Going anywhere else would be a step down, and can't understand why he'd want to move. An example is that although City have brought in good players, they aren't going to overtake United for a long long time. A bit like the rivalry with Liverpool...
Charlie Nicholas mentioned the things that United have done to help him in the past. The calming him down (a bit anyway!); keeping the spotlight off him whenever his private life was in the papers; leaving him out of the Sunderland game to help him get fit for England, hoping that he'd come back in form.
The ending line from Megson was that you can't help but question what his people are telling him. We've heard what he doesn't want (to stay, and the improved contract), so what does he want?
Hopefully it'll soon be resolved either way. If he is sold I hope we don't do it cheaply like RVN & Beckham...
