Last thing we need is a winger, Nani, Valencia, Obertan and Park is good enough (and if we get a versatile forward you can play wide even better)

without forgetting Giggs ;) i think the only 2 things we can need are:
*a quality young GK, like Ochoa or Sergio Asenjo
*a genuis midfielder, i mean like Iniesta, Xavi or Fabregas

Just seen Berba's comments: "I'm sure United will buy a new striker - but I am there and that's important," he said.

"In my two years, things could have been better but they could have been worse, too. I have had my moments.

"I have won the title and the Carling Cup but people had great expectations for the money it cost to sign me. We do not know what will happen in the third year."

Despite his United future looking bleak, Berbatov denied suggestions that he is lining up a new club, and insists he is happy at Old Trafford.

"I will try to fulfil my contract because where would I go after United? I have reached the top with them.

"I do not know about interest from other clubs and I have had no meetings."

Interesting about the new striker. Given both he and Rooney have said similarly - I kind of believe we've already 'signed' this new striker and the dressing room has been told...

Or maybe they've only been told a new striker would be signed. Either way, that means someone will probably have to leave.

I'm guessing it's Owen. That'd leave us with Rooney, Berba, Macheda and this new striker. Not counting the Mexican guy as I'm sure he'll probably spend his first year in reserve and play the occasionnal Carling Cup games. As for Diouf, well...

I'd love the idea of us signing a Striker with Berbatov staying but im not sure we could afford to.

He's only ever scored 20 or more league goals in a season twice (both for Leverkusen). He is not and never will be a poacher who racks the goals up, so I don't know why everyone expects it from him? He scores at the same rate as Bergkamp, Zola and Cantona did in the Premiership and is more that type of player than he is a Shearer, Cole or Fowler.

The only way we can accomodate another striker is if Fergie is planning on getting rid of Owen or Berbatov and/or going back to 2/3 starting strikers. He did bid for Benzema last summer so maybe the 4-5-1 we've been playing wasn't as he planned.

I said this before and I'll say it again. We dont need another striker.
Rooney is untouchable so no problems there. Owen is still worth keeping cuz he proved he can still score if given the right service, and as for his injury, I blame the Wembley pitch. Berba cost us too much so he's not worth selling considering how much you'd get, and there's that feeling that once he scores a couple, he'll be banging them in left, right and center. And we still have Kiko and the Mexican fella (and Wellbeck and Diouf, if they're worth counting).
So looking at that group of strikers, the only other kind of striker we can bring in is an experienced and expensive one. So why spend that kind of money on a striker when we still need a new GK (Foster's definately on his way out), maybe a left winger, and most importantly a playmaker/attacking central midfielder?

To be honest, unless of course we buy someone like David Villa, I'd rather we sign no one at all and know that atleast it contributed towards stabilising our financial situation, than seeing us waste money on a striker we dont need.

The reason I'm saying this is cuz we already know for sure we're bringing in a new keeper seeing how Foster is on the verge of joining Birmingham, lets say we only sign one other player and its a striker. What's the point when even top strikers would struggle without service in the EPL? And on the flip side, what makes you think Owen, Berba, etc would continue to struggle if even a half decent midfielder were brought in to provide more service to the forwards? Plus that way it saves us having to get rid of Berba cuz I dont think we can financially afford that.
If we sold him now, we'd probably get around £15 million, so that's instantly a £15 million loss. And IMO we'd have to spend atleast another £30 million to bring in a quality striker. Its just so much easier and cheaper to bring in a midfielder.

I'm with Rune on this striker business.

And not many people apart from some Mexicans perhaps will know just how good or not that new little fella from Chivas is anyway. He could be your new striker. He might be better and more ready than some are giving him credit for. I'll reserve judgment on him for now.

p.s. One can't help but wonder, if Man Utd still had Giuseppe Rossi. He'd be your left-footed striker and provide that other spark that you guys are perhaps talking about or craving.

Yah. Well Forlan is in a different class anyway. Definitely been one of the world's top strikers for the past 3-4 years. Rossi is still in a way one for the future tho pretty good already of course.

I am not sure of how true the rumor of us having the first option of re-signing Giuseppe Rossi? I was gutted when he left...hes a cracking finisher.

I think the main thing we need is that creative midfielder, no doubt that should be the priority. A Striker 2ndly because as we saw when Rooney got injured our goals dried up considerably.

A Keeper can wait a year. PIG and Amos are fine behind VDS.

Nice video. Another one of Maradona's lovely omissions from this year's world cup squad. :LOL: Just imagine what him and Cambiasso could've done together in the middle of the park! (of course there are other players like Mascherano, Pastore, Veron, etc but these 2 alone are good enough to make the midfield of World Champs) Now both will be watching it on their telly @ home lool not even from bench. :CONFUSE: :(

What's Banega gotta do with Silva? Different players, different positions. Both could be useful to United in own way of course if they were to acquire either. Anyway, nice goal when these two combine in minute 2:50 of the video. Great pass from Banega, great move and finish from lil David.

I can't remember right now so I may very well be wrong but from what I recall, when Utd sold him to Villarreal, they either put in a first option clause in there or I seem to remember something about even having a buy-back fee agreement where they could buy him back for a certain fee which both clubs agreed at that time but I suppose wasn't revealed publicly.

Not sure how true any of this is tho, my memory is shady and it was awhile back but I seem to recall something like that... it wasn't just a regular 'sale', there was something in there that hinted that Rossi may one day return if Fergie and Co. should want him back.

I meant, if we're gonna buy someone off Valencia then get Banega. He looks like he's got more flair.

I think the point Rune was making is that were heavily linked with David Silva and not with Banega considering Banega is probably the type of player we need more.

I think Silva is a good player but he'd cost an awful lot, Mesut Ozil would be probably a better fit for us and wouldn't cost as much. Germany have some fantastic talent

I see. Not because he's got more flair though, I don't think he does, Silva has just as much but then is a more attacking player anyway so that's expected. But because like you said, you could use someone like him in the middle of the park to open defenses more perhaps rather than someone further forward like Silva.

Thing with David though is that he can play left mid for you which is where he started anyway like a young Ryan Giggs in a way. So he brings a bit of versatility as well.

As for Ozil, now there is someone I'd compare to Silva. Similar players more or less. Talented, agile, skillful, left-footed, but still fairly young, and can play on the left or as attacking midfield behind striker, etc.

He would cost a lot too though!

Sina, how often in the past has Gourcuff played in a two man central midfield i.e. as a CM?

Not that often in recent times as in Bordeaux, Blanc usually lined up Fernando Menegazzo and Alou Diarra as DMF/CM's with Yoann further forward as attacking midfield crafting and supporting attack mostly.

But, he CAN play there. He's not like just some flair-boy talented attacking midfielder. Like Diego let's say. He is a CM/AMF much like Zidane. Plus his height and physique allows him to play as CM.

When he broke through at Rennes before the premature move to Milan, he played as CM anyway and of course very well. His defensive skills aren't bad. It's just that his attacking talent is much more noticeable.

Anyway, if United were to ever get him, I guess on a small level, I couldn't help but cheer for you guys! :P lol

Is he disciplined enough to be able to sit in his position and stand his ground like Fletcher or does he always go forward?

No he's a disciplined player. He's tactical and he'll do what the coach asks of him. That's kinda what I was getting at in last post. He's not some natural Brazilian attacking midfielder like Diego let's say. He's really a CM like Zizou who happens to have incredible talent and be more attack-minded naturally and get forward as well. But his main job is distribution and playmaking anyway. Even if he'll chip in with goals and has good shot on him and two good feet, again similar to Zidane in that respect. Now if only he were balding... :P
