I'm still not convinced Sir Alex took the FA Cup seriously enough. He has won enough of 'em so he'd naturally place it right at the bottom of his priorities.
I remember a couple of years ago when Chelsea were in a similar position and they were trying to win every competition they were in. The manager and the players blatantly put a lot of emphasis on "winning the lot" and you got that feeling too when they'd treat each game like a cup final.
But we've never at any point said we're trying to win every trophy. Maybe thats just Sir Alex's style to not get carried away but he never gave the impression that its what he wants. Just like the Carling Cup in the past. Apart from this season, in the previous years it was very clear that Sir Alex couldnt care less about it, fielding random reserve team players instead of a couple of first teamers and senior fringe players like he does now. But on the otherhand, we made it very clear that we wanted to win the World Cup Championship, which we ended up winning. Before the end of the competition there was all this talk about how winning the competition will solidify our status as the best in the world and I think I remember Rooney and/or Carrick saying something about wanting to do it for the fans so that they can tell everyone we're the Champions of the World.
For us (or Sir Alex atleast) its always been about the league and the Champions League. And if we're ever gonna win the lot, we're gonna have to change our approach. And if Sir Alex knows its his last season, I think we just might see it happen. It will probably take just one more signing to pull it off (2 if you include the permanant signing of Tevez). I'm thinking of something along the lines of a utility player like O'Shea but with qualities closer to Essien (big ask, I know). Similar to how Giggs is great on the wing but can do more than just a decent job whether he's playing in the center or behind the striker.
But yeah, the point of my post is, I dont think Sir Alex ever thought about winning the FA Cup. He's probably relieved that he doesnt have another cup final to think about. Cuz he knows he cant beat Chelsea without playing a strong team and that would require him to rest players for the league (which he clearly wants more). I'm just hoping he does it right next year. And hopefully win the CL again so that we get a second chance at the Super Cup.
